Summary: 80-200mm 2.8D ED - Just don't use it for portraits because of Iron face 18-200mm DX - One lens that covers a large spectrum 12-24 DX - Good Wide Zoom 135mm 3.5 OR 2.8 - Great glass and good for portraits 60mm 2.8 - Bee's Knees, Macro/portrait/general you're an idiot if you don't have this. 35mm 1.8 DX - Chinese BUT still fantastic and CHEAP. Everyone must own one of these. The following are optional: 70-300 ED VR - Cheap, Silent AF, has VR, Sharp!! 10.5 Fisheye DX - fun fun fun and works fine on FX in APC-S mode 24-85 FX VR ED - underrated, Cheap, Tack Sharp

    Ken, based on my study of your videos and that I accidentally dropped my D3100 last week during a Cuba Cruise, I decided to buy the following strategy: 1. D700; $550 2. 35mm f1.8 G DX (for my D3100); $150 3. 50mm f1.8 G; $150 4. 85mm f1.8 G: $400 5. 180mm F2.8 AF; $179 6. tokina 100mm f2.8 atx; $319 7. 60mm f2.8 AF; $199 8. 35-70mm f2.8 AF; $140 Total expenditures: $2087 Now, all I have to do is learn how to use the darn things. The two photography classes are helping a bit, but not too much.

Nikon D7100 24.1 MP DX-Format CMOS Digital SLR AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR zoom lens Jumped from 1981 Nikon FE with 5 lenses to this in Dec.2015. Discovered a fine-dot crack underneath top lens via magnify glass. Sent to Nikon in NY for repair twice and it hardly focuses now. I have to pull back down from 18mm to 50mm zoom in order for it to focus, otherwise no focus = no shutter click = no shoot. Will not shoot pix in broad daylight outside unless scene is in the shade. I do not know what to do, I wish I bought a refurbished or maybe they will accept a brand new trade in for a refurbished. What is it about high end computerized digitals where the software goes nutty? Do you have the same prob?Any tip? BTW, I paid almost 2,500 smuckaroos on this. Tired of my camera with too many lenses in tow and want to be happy with this & one zoom lens. Will delete this rant(?) after your valuable response, as I do not want this dissertation sitting here on your channel. Thanx loads!! Sincerely, Desperate

I have a 35mm f2D- great lens for FX. BUT the 35mm 1.8G (DX) lenses do work in FX format. There is some vignetting which is minimized at f4 and after that the aperture actually gets in the picture. I do some times use m 35mm 1.8G on my d800e. The lens (the 1.8G) is not great at rendering shadows (at least for the colour red) don't know why.

This is the video I have been looking for!!! I upgraded to the D7100 and purchased the 50 1.8 G about a year ago. I love them both! The only thing I don't like is the limit in tight spaces with my 50. I have been saving for a 24-70 2.8 to give me some range. My knowledge of lenses is fairly limited. I was told to get the 24-70 2.8 or the 24-120 f4 (cheaper). I see now there maybe many other options. I want to keep my pictures as close to what the 50 looks like. I love the look of it. The 24-70 has a pretty price tag attached which I don't mind saving for if that is what I need. I mostly photograph portraits but I do like variety. The lenses I own in addition to the 50 are the 18-135 3.5-5.6 (I traded my 18-55 kit for) and the 55-200 (hardly ever use) kit that came with the camera. I am very happy with my D7100 but I am sure I will go FF one day. I currently have between $700-800 saved for a lens. Would you suggest continuing to save or.....? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to buy lens decor unless it is on purpose :) Thanks

***** well, the 24 70 is A: fragile B: not EXTREMELY sharp, and C: a LOT of overkill for a D7100 have you considered the 35-70 F2.8 for 250$+ minty used Ebay ??? the 24-120 F4 is a POOPER LENS, dont even think of getting it! You can also save for a gray market (just no US warranty) 24 70 2.8 and buy from NY NY for about $1200 new. as a perfect portait DX lens, the best bang for your buck is a 85mm F1.8 D for about $300 minty used Ebay I would NOT advise saving more to get the 24 70, while i have it and love it, its serious OVERKILL for DX use, and you can save a TON and get just as good an image with slow AF by getting a 35-70 2.8 for $250+ the TOP TOP choice for your D7100 perfect for portraits, and supreme for Macro work (so much fun) is the TOkina 100mm 2.8 for $380 NEW !

I know this question has been flogged like the proverbial dead horse, but is the extra 10 degrees of frame on the 10-24mm worth sacrificing to get the 12-24mm? I've heard the 10-24 is not great at 10mm, wide open, but for landscapes - generally at about f/8 anyway - it should be sharp, right? Also, people have said the build quality of the 10 isn't as good as the 12, but is it /that/ bad? (How important is it that the 12-24 has no rubber O-ring?) I hate to play devil's advocate, and I feel like I should get the 12-24mm, but I'd appreciate more thoughts! (I'm yet to find unbiased views online...) By the way, in England, a 12-24 is about £400-£450 used (~ $600-$670), unless you buy a battered one; and a used 10-24 is a similar price (more in some places). However, you can get a brand new 10-24 for £550 ($820) with cashback, ATM. Cheers! :)

  • @kathodosdotcom

NO, its not, the 10-24 is also an inferior build lens than the 12-24, of that there is NO DOUBT. rubber O ring, who cares, you plan on shooting on the beach or in the desert? +Theoria Apophasis Thanks for the helpful info so fast, I'm looking forward to grabbing one for portraits. I'm trying to find a local photographer to tag along with as an extra hand to get experience with family and wedding shots. I'm starting out with a d7100

Hey you really know your gear and would love some advice. I currently have a Nikon d5300 paired with 18-140mm, 12-24mm, 50mm 1.8g, 35mm 1.8g, sold 55-300 to upgrade to 70-300 vr, 85mm micro till i can upgrade to a 105 micro, tamron 28-75 2.8. Most of my lenses i bought used except for the primes and the 18-140 which was my first lens. If it could be my main source of income i would do it full time. I would consider myself an intermediate since i didn't really go to school for photography. I will be shooting at a family members wedding in September and would like to be prepared. I only have one body at the moment and am considering an upgrade for the wedding. Im not sure if i should transition to full frame since most of my lenses are dx lenses. If i do i was thinking of the d750 and perhaps selling my dx gear. or getting a better second body perhaps d7100 or d7200 which will allow me to use the lenses without a focus motor built into them. or getting a really nice lens like a 70-200 2.8 either tamron or nikon if i can get a decent one used. Also what lenses would you recommend for event photography that would be great in low light. Im open to suggestions from an expert and would really appreciate it.

+chrissps62 I'd probably go with the nikon 24-85 just cause the vr adds a couple stops of light. at the time my budget was tight and I stumbled across mine for a good deal. and I needed that range for an event I was shooting.

Shaya Maddex Used D7100, 60mm Micro 2.8D and 35mm DX 1.8G.. Tbh there is no problem in getting a D7100 with over 50k clicks or so on it, you will never really out shoot the shutter unless if you're an avid action shooter. I've seen tons of expensive cameras with high shutter ratings with only 20k shots on them what a waste. Just make sure the D7100 is in good condition, doesn't have to be mint. A good condition D7100 will beat the hell out of a new D3300 any day any moment.

I've recently purchased the 70-300 3.5-4.5 G VR that you recommended - but now I lack something in between my range. +Theoria Apophasis the 24-70 range for me would be my every bang-around lens - and maybe for smaller landscapes on lower zooms. But the 24-85 VR G sounds like a good solution. Unfortunately in europe, the prices (even used) are a bit steeper - but I'll manage :) (The ideal choice would've been the 24-70, but that's out of budget $200-1000 are alright)

Theoria Apophasis Also - question/suggestion, and feel free to shoot it down - only thinking out loud. You get a ton of questions (like mine) regarding a specific lens - is it good for y, does it work for x and so on - but all the answers are muddled together and you end up getting the same question again and again. It can be hard for newbies like myself to figure out, was the 35-70 f/2.8 or the f/3.3-4.5 that was brilliant or even worth owning - or was it the D or the G, and so on. Would you be interested in a site, where people can ask about a specific lens and you can reply, whenever you feel like it and have the time, by just selecting wether or not it's good - or good for landscape or portraits - if we frame the answers correctly. Then you'll have a less BxSMark-like site, with answers from someone with actual experience. In the longer run you'd be able to add user votes - sort of like tripadvisor, if you've used that - where people answer if it's value for money, if it's good for x, y or z and so on. Or just a simple thumbs up, thumbs down concept. I know programming - but I don't know lenses, and this would've helped me save quite a lot of money - and I thought of it as a loose idea to maybe help someone else :)

So u know, i placed a bid on a 60mm 2.8 D on fleabay, hope to win. Thanks.

they repositioned the AF sensor, but the AF sensor bay is still mispositioned, they didnt change that, so its still got a defect, if you go on DP forum, youll see the sent back and "fixed" D750 still have the issue, but its better, because they lowered the sensor, but it still has the issue. theyll have to retool the body in mfg., and that costs MILLIONS,.....theyll quietly 100% fix it sometime in the future, but its still not fixed. fleabay!! how true, they screw me in the fanny everytime i sell something. They rape me when i sell it, then , since they own paypal, they rape me again in paypal fees. its like charging for dropping a hooker off to a John, then charging for the hummer, then charging to pick her up ROFL !!!

I wish there was a channel that did videos as good as this but for Canon because Canon have or have had lenses that are spec equivalents to most of these lenses. Honest reviews are hard to find. It's particularly hard to get good opinions on older lenses because judgement seems to be clouded by vintage hype or cheaper cost.

Would the nikkor 60mm f/2.8 Auto-focus on a d5200? And for a broader question, how do I know if the lens has inbuilt af or not? Sorry for a stupid as question but im a fucking noob...

look at the back, see if its a screw drive or modern G or AF marked lens. The D version would NOT focus on a 5200 because your cammy doesnt have a SCREW DRIVE

ImprovisedSurvival ever since making a huge mistake years ago linking everything i write and translate to everything else i write, shoot and do.........i dont have an open portfolio to the public anymore, its on my website , which is for clients and by reference only. I only make these videos as valid logical reasoning behind gear choices since ive owned or used every Nikkor lens made in the past 30+ years. people can either choose or not choose to accept the validity of the statements within. However 100% of everyone (currently about 500+ people) who have made gear purchases, mostly lenses,.....off my recommendations, are all utterly happy. As to my work, it stands alone FROM youtube and facebook; I now compartmentalize everything i do, for logical reasoning. Ever since some mean people ruined some of my translation work BECAUSE I had everything I do linked to EVERYTHING ELSE I do, ill no long let that happen. I prefer to let the logic of the videos speak for themselves, (or not, as someone might conclude). Im not trying to obtuse, but private. Most pros I know only show their work to a handful of close associates, and Im the same, clients and close acquaintances and references only.

you keep pushing the 135 but I use the 135 f2.8 minolta with an adapter with infinity I get great shots with $20 lens and $22 for adapter awesome boaka I think you over look some of the old old Minolta MD/MC lenses you can get most in mint cheap just stay away from 50mm and 28mm thy suck ass badly soft soft soft ........ even though newer sigma lenses are horrible some of the older ones not bad but not great either......the only problem with these lenses I see they are darker almost by 1 1/2 stops....but if you have great light MD/MC is a great option

I must say your videos are some of my favourite on youtube .. I don't think you need to be into photography for it to be entertaining lol. What exactly bothers you about portraiture with the 80-200? I was under the impression that or the Tamron 70-200 VR are essential?(FX)

+Theoria Apophasis Thanks, how is the sharpness compared for portraits on a DX camera? Im not to concerned about being a macro lens, just want a sharp portrait one. Would you still chose this one over the 50mm?

cut you sharp. Yes.....but 99% of people that say that, USE a macro, then NEVER let go of it. its only by happenstance a macro lens ALSO would I ???? 400% absolutely the 60mm is the SWISS ARMY KNIFE of lenses, reproduction (art etc etc) lens macro lens portrait lens normal lens (yes, even on a DX)

+Theoria Apophasis Awesome, thanks! I have watched this video at least 3 times back and forth as well as around 20 others from your channel. I have 0 equipment so far (except for the d7100 refubrish you published last weekend, thanks btw, I was going for a d5300 until I saw your videos) and looking for 3 lenses to begin with and move forward from there. So far I have picked: *35mm 1.8G *60mm 2.8D And I'm thinking a zoom lens just for the versatility, maybe the 24 - 85 or the 70-300. Any input on these choices, would you change any of these? (im not to concerned about landscapes for the moment but that's on the next one to get)

  • @kathodosdotcom

both very wise choice there............ 24-85 VR G (ONLY THE VR G!!!!!) is usually $220+ minty used and a wise choice..... however if youre shooting critters and nude neighbors (haaaa!) the 70 300 VR G (again, ONLY the VR G version) is $300 mint used all day and a great choice depends on what youre gonna shoot most in MOST cases, the 24 85 VR G would be the next wisest choice.

sure thing, but it would be a short video. Recommend only HOYA HMC (protection filters), the much acclaimed BW filters suck, and theyre very pricey. even better is a (believe it or not) a brand called PLATINUM sold at Best Buy, its a superior protection filter made by Sunpak sunpak used to make CRAP, but theyre fixed up their bizz. yeah yeah, Sunpak and best buy, believe it or not!

I have a Nikon D7100 and I wouldn't buy any Nikon DX lense apart from the 35mmDX. for 1500euro/USD, I'd go for the Tokina 11-16, Sigma 18-35, Nikon 50mm prime and the Tamron 70-300mm latest version, just about doable for 1500Euros. Happy shooting!!
