The Angmar War - Wars of the Legendarium

The Angmar War spelt the end of the Kingdom of Arnor during the Third Age of Middle-earth in Tolkien’s legendarium. However, in the end, it was both a victory and a defeat for the Free-Peoples! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! Terrors sure to follow Watch him watch down from the hills And see all your tomorrows Deep, deep, deep he's been, in Mandos' musty halls Where music made of history Makes echoes on the walls Laugh, laugh, sing and dance! Journey back to stay Upon the lands the mortals know To fight another day Bells on his horses, and songs in his mind Eternal heart of forces, eternal is his kind All that is gold does not glitter... ...but sometimes, in the light of his eyes, ...by the word of his rhyme, and no matter your size ...what ends may come, what suns may rise ...when deeds are done, when the battle cries There is one who has lasted, and even returned Wrapped up in laughter, so jolly yet stern In his wrath and his humor, his glittering sight Will lead you home, parting shadows, blazing light The golden lord charges against the darkness, and darkness itself must flee from him and the name of the light that drives a fate forever forward... is Glorfindel. with bells on his horses, and songs in his mind.

@@MountainFisher He saw how the Witch King would die, and he made a joke out of it. "Not by the hand of man" indeed! He went riding around openly against the ring-wraiths with friggin' jingle bells on his horse, just so they'd know it was him, or not caring if they did. Everything about him says: "So what?" He's been there, done that, already has the t-shirt, and isn't worried about... anything. That's the most fun you can have, even on the second time around. He had this understated way of putting things in context or proportion, like (approx) "There aren't many left who can ride openly against all of the Nine, but such as we are, we came out to find you" like he was just going to bring in a puppy before it got caught in the rain. He didn't CARE if there were ringwraiths, because they didn't matter to him, and that's too funny, and he knew it. Multiple times in the legendarium, everything was going to hell, and then Glorfindel... happened.

Did Glorfindel actually see that a Hobbit would bring the Chief of the Nazgul down or did he just get the word that Mankind would not bring about his downfall so that Gothmog, named after the chief of the Balrogs, would become Captain of the Nazgul? The bells on his horse may not be for signaling, but just because he liked their sound. BTW I'm not debating you trying to win a contest of words over a fantasy. "I am the Dark Lord's heir." I find that line interesting on a meta-level, particularly the choice of the word "heir", not "servant". We know that Sauron was hiding his continued survival during this time, and use of the word "heir" implies that Sauron has died, or at least is never coming back. A ruse, a deception. His name carries weight in Middle-Earth; Sauron’s enemies would've rallied at the first real hint that he was behind Angmar. Yet, most wouldn't bother with this unknown new guy, this "Witch-King", until it was too late to stop him.

@@mason2486 not really. In the movies it is established that the Nazgûl are tied to Sauron, same as the book, so to make a sequel it would be breaking the established lore of the movies. Besides, we don't know nothing of the Witch King's true personality; all we saw was a slave to Sauron. Because of this, I think it would be better to have a prequel to see what kind of men where the Nazgûl (specially the Lord of the Nazgûl) before turning into what they are by the time of lotr. Not only it would actually make sense, but it would be much more interesting as opposed to just cool for the sake of it.

Thanks for explaining this part of the story. The Witch King is one of my favorite villains ever and I like the idea of him ruling over his own kingdom as a wraith at one point. However, I was never able to piece together exactly when or how this war took place in spite of reading the appendixes and other extended readings. I really love these videos and give thanks for the research and preparation of them. I have been a Tolkien fan since I was 18. I am now 68 and still love the stories as much as ever. I have all the books, including all books printed post-mortem. I also play Lord of the Rings Online (LotRO), a MMORPG that has been ongoing for about 12 years. I started playing right at the end of the Alpha 2 stage, in January of 2017. The game has so much detail about the stories and the scenery is fabulous. I feel I'm actually in Middle Earth when I'm ingame. I've stood on the broken ship in Forochel, I've been to Angmar to Carn Dum, I've been so many other places I've read about in the books. The original developers of LotRO were very strict on keeping as close to the lore of Tolkien as viable with an online game and that is what keeps me there.

Kreuzritter Gottes I mean, there’s a lot of stuff left out, but even with that it’s a 4 hour movie. There’s not a whole lot left that they could do without making it a 6 hour long affair. Even the most passionate fan of Tolkien’s books can’t possible think that the movies were horrible. Other than leaving out some of the characters (Imrahil, Forlond, Duinhir and the other lords of Gondor, The Grey Company and the sons of Elrond) and the whole army of the dead thing, I can’t think of anything facetious they added for example. Most importantly, as important as some of those things are in the legendarium, I understand that the product which was put forward on the screen wouldn’t necessarily have benefitted from those extra little characters and tidbits, as much as I love them, it might have just cluttered the part of the story they were trying to tell.

I have always been fascinated and awestruck by the Angmar Wars, ever since I learned of them. One of my favorite fanfics that try to depict a portion of it is called "The Last Prince" by Ianeth, chronicling the final days of Cardolan. One of my favorite passages is after the great battle at Amon Sûl has been lost, the armies of Arthedain and Cardolan having fallen or fled into their fortifications. King Arveleg is dead, Amon Sûl burns in the distance, the brother of the last prince of Cardolan dies of his wounds in another fort. And the chapter ends with this passage: "Not long afterwards, though it was still night, the enemy commenced his assault on the remaining forts that still lay in the hands of his enemy using fresh forces who had not up to that point taken part in the battle. The men on the walls saw their torches advance in long snaking rivers of light along the ridge and up the steep eastern flanks of the hills, but even before they arrived they found themselves pitted in a bitter fight against mountain orcs who had scaled the walls under cover of darkness. Great were the deeds done in the defence of those high places, even when all hope had been extinguished, but by the morning none remained to tell of them and the victory of the Sorcerer King of Angmar was complete." This embodies what I like most of the Fall of Arnor. The Dunedain fought to the end, even when all hope was lost.

For example, and my personal favourite, would be a book focused about the nine ringwraights, where it tells only about their life before they had the rings of power, the period that took them to be fully corrupted up until the end of the servitude to the Dark Lord. And the best title for the novel ,in my opinion, would be The Nine Kings.

love your content. while I love LOTR and Tolkien's work around it (especially the linguistic parts), reading ALL the texts that give us the history & mythology is ... kind of exhausting (like studying for a history exam) so these topic-focused videos are a great way to dive into the background & history of Middle Earth without having to actually study Tolkienism :D

These videos are certainly the best Tolkien-focused videos on the internet, but I have one simple point which I believe would please many viewers: you should change the font your using. Maybe not the standard font but something nicer or something that follows the theme of the channel. It would be great. I love your videos!

One of the Witch-King's greatest weaknesses was 20th Century (A.D.) show tunes, which he knew from his magic. All Théoden needed to do was to start singing, "I got the horse right here The name is Paul Revere And here's a guy that says if the weather's clear Can do, can do, this guy says the horse can do If he says the horse can do, can do, can do." The Witch-King would have joined in the song and abandoned his loyalty to Sauron. But no one -- not Gandalf, not Saruman, not even Sauron -- knew this, so it never came up.

What if Arnor was rebuilt and re-populated? What role would they have played in the lord of the rings? Just imagine the glory and beauty of Arnorian Soldiers marching to aid their brothers in Gondor. Perhaps Saruman would not have been able to establish his reign of terror with Arnor sending help to Rohan.

My idea is that the Witch King was not a nazgul when he ruled Angmar. Sauron gave the nine to mortal men - great Kings and Sorcerers - and all the great rings extended life. A willing servant of the Dark Lord but not yet faded to a wraith.
