The Ancient FILIPINO BAYBAYIN Script! (Did you KNOW About THAT?)

Ойын-сауық

Baybayin is the Tagalog term used to refer to their indigenous alphasyllabary belonging to the family of the Brahmic scripts and that was widely used in Luzon and other parts of the Philippines during the 16th and 17th centuries before being supplanted by the Latin alphabet.

The Baybayin script or writing system is categorized by linguists as an abugida writing system or alpha-syllabary writing system, wherein a character represents either a single vowel or a consonant with an attached vowel already, which in this case is the vowel "a". So, every other consonant character is not pronounced just the consonant but with already the vowel "a" attached to the consonant sound. To change the attached vowel sound into other vowel sounds, you need to add a special stroke, mark, or character to the base consonant+vowel "a" character. In Baybayin, you just need to add a stroke or dot on top to change the vowel from "a" into "e" or "i", and a stroke or dot below to turn the attached vowel into "o" or "u". Traditionally, the baybayin is only written with an open ending syllable, which a syllable that is a vowel itself, or a syllable that ends in a vowel, and if a syllable ends in a consonant, then the consonant sound is traditionally not written down. As soon as the Spaniards encountered this script and tried to record, document, and write in this script, one friar or priest developed a way to write down the ending consonant sound of a syllable, so words can be easily written down and read by them, as they try to use the Baybayin script to write down Catholic prayers to teach and Christianize our native ancestors. The friar or priest used a cross mark or like an x mark that is placed below a consonant+vowel "a" character, to ommit or erase the attached vowel "a" and make it into a single consonant sound character that is used to represent the consonat ending sound in a syllable. These Spaniards also tried to learn the other native languages of the Philippines, record and document some of the native scripts or writing systems, and tried to learn how to read and write using the scripts to write down prayers and other writings to teach and spread Christianity or Catholicism to the people, and to colonize the natives, and to their other plans to the natives of the pre-colonial Philippines. Unfortunately, they (the Spaniards) also burned and destroyed a lot of existing writings of the natives believing that they are works of the devil or of paganism (That's how they view, see, and demonize the ancient beliefs and religions of the native people who practices animism, ancestor worship or veneration, nature worship, shamanism, Hindu-Buddhist beliefs, and Islam), thus erasing much of the written records and history of the pre-colonial Philippines. Other pre-colonial writings of the native people also using this native script are written on wood, bamboos, leaves, tree barks, and other biodegradable and natural objects that are easily to burn and destroy, easily to wear out and be faded away, and are easy to decompose by natural elements, weather, or by fire, water, and other natural or man-made interventions. Only the writings, records, and documents written, documented, and printed by the Spaniards, priests and friars, chroniclers, colonizers, and those that survived and are wtitten on stones, rocks, caves, metal plates, clay pots, and ceramics are the things that survived, apart from oral traditions and oral literature.

The Baybayin script or writing system is just one of the many ancient or pre-colonial, classical, or archaic writing systems and scripts used by early ancestors or native people of the pre-colonial Philippines. It is the original namr of thr ancient writing system or script of the Tagalog people, Tagalog ethnic group, or the Tagalog ethnolinguistic nation that live in Central and Southern Luzon areas. Other groups of people, ethnic groups, and ethnolinguistic nations during that time also have their own writing systems or scripts like the Kulitan of the Kapampangan people, the Surat Bisaya or Badlit of the Visayan people, a version of the Jawi script used by the Moro people of Mindanao especially by the Tausug people, the Kirim script of the Maranao people, the Palaw'an script of the Palaw'an people of Palawan, the Hanunu'o script of the Hanunu'o Mangyan people of Mindoro, the Buhid script of the Buhid people, and the Tagbanwa script of the Tagbanwa people. Other scripts are also used by Bicolanos, Ilocanos, and other groups, but all of these similar scripts and writing systems are just grouped together and called Baybayin by other people and especially in modern times. Baybayin then became a general umbrella term for all of the similar and related scripts or writing systems, both the still used and existing ones and the ancient ones that are not that much used or are forgotten. Only the Hanunu'o, Tagbanwa, and Buhid, and Palaw'an scripts survived to this day and are still used by their respective people groups in certain situations. These are also all considered forms, sister scripts, or descendants of Baybayin. The Kulitan of the Kapampangan people are now getting popularity among Kapampangans and other Filipinos too and is sometimes considered as a form, sister script, or descendant of Baybayin, and also the Surat Bisaya or Badlit script of the Visayan people among Visyan people and other Filipinos, and the Baybayin script or Tagalog Baybayin/Sulat Tagalog of the Tagalog people, which is the most well-known ancient Filipino writing system or script in the Philippines. The Jawi on the other hand is a local Malay adaptation or version of the Arabic script or writing, that is used to write some languages of Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, and some other languages of Mindanao and other languages of Southeast Asia, like for the Malay language and for the Tausug language for example. Aside from Jawi, that is used in daily writing of some of the local languages in Mindanao and in other areas like Brunei, Malaysia, and Indonesia, the Arabic script or writing system is also used in the religion of Islam. The Jawi script used by the Tausug people though is a little bit different compared to the Jawi used in Malay language and the Jawi used for the other languages of Southeast Asia. The Chinese settlers who lived in the Philippines before the Spaniards came, also use their own Chinese writing system and characters to write down and spell their words in their native languages like Hokkien, etc. When the Spaniards came and colonized the Philippines, other scripts, alphabets, or writing systems also developed, evolved, or were created and used, like the Chavacano alphabet or writing system of the Zamboangueño people of Zamboanga Peninsula area and Basilan province, which is derived or based from the Abecedario or the older Spanish alphabet used in the Philippines before, and there is also the Eskayan script of the Eskayan people of Bohol, which use a unique script or writing system for their particular belief or religion and for their own group or community. The Spanish alphabet, or Abecedario, which is the older Spanish alphabet and writing system or script used in the Philippines before, and taught or propagated by the Spaniards, is also used in the Philippines during colonial times especially by those who study, use, speak, read, write, and communicate in Spanish. Other writing systems and scripts also were used then in the Philippines during the Spanish colonization up to the present day. There are the Japanese writing system or script that uses kanji, katakana, and hiragana used by Japanse migrants and later also learned by some Filipinos...then there is also the English alphabet and writing system that is used now by many Filipinos, and many others like the Korean hangeul script, etc.

This instrument can be found in the southern part of the Philippines especially in Maguindanao... I remember learning this when I was in elementary (year 2000). We just learned it partially and it is such a beautiful script....

My teacher in elementary which was a public provincial school, was deeply besotted with Alibata/Baybayin. After seeing the letters and its structure I engraved it in my heart as I too fell inlove with it. Up until now all my diaries and notes whenever I do not want others to know the content were all written in baybayin/Alibata. Now I am in the mid of my life - i will be handing this down to my seeds and to the generation to come alongside עברית which is my second language. Thank you for appreciating our ancient language, history and our music. You should dive also how our Kundimans were beautifully written and made. More power to the both of you!!!

Yup. That's why being colonized by other countries from the past was not totally bad at all. That implies on how future Filipinos are flexible in all aspects. It's sad to think sometimes that colonizers' power was being abused against our ancestors, that's why we should also be grateful to our national heroes who offer their lives for the freedom of our country. 😊

@@MOTIVATEMINDS_MM But actually, Spain did not really abused us too much... Just like what our recent books are always love to tell us.... The happenings in the country during the spanish occupation is like a relationship between a master and a servant. We would really expect what was the environment of such scenario. But if you will try to compare it to to American occupation. I tell you, American killed more filipinos in just a little time than the 300 years of Spanish Occupation. hispanic historian was the one who record about the magellan dissapointed mission. Therefore Spain is willing to tell their failed mission. And base on historical fact, there are only 2 recorded war between Spain and philippines. Their entrance, Lapu-lapu and Magellan War; and their exit, the Spanish-Filipino war. Remember that Spain did not conquered us by force or by war. But American did. And also remember how Spain was willing to share all their culture to us. And even the kind education they have. Remember that UST was built in the 1600. As early as that, we are already Hispanic in education. For the fact, we were the first in all Asia to have a University. Look at how hispanic is our daily life now. Is it by force or by choice? Really Americans did manipulated us greatly. Just like how our history books recorded only the bad sides of Marcos Era, that they also did it on behalf of our Spanish Colonizers. They put in our books mostly negative or bad sides of Spanish Colonization. Where infact there are more positive sides on that colonizations. Spain was declining during mid-1800. There economy was dropping, and their people were really suffering from it. Because of that Spain did change some of their laws on lands they own like Mexico and philippines. During that time, everything was like the situation today. Remember that we are also now suffering economy dropping. No school, Job were less, people were also suffering from hunger and the authorities had more power. Whoever does not follow the rules, eventually persecuted or executed. And thats the beginning of filipino insurgencies against the Spaniards. Have you heard of filipino heroes or insurgencies on 1500 well, aside from Lapu-lapu;, or in 1600, or in 1700 or even the early 1800? None... Most of those heroes were during the late 1800... During the late 1800, Spain give up mexico first. Because they really thought of the Philippines as their 2nd capital that they don't really to want to give this country. But the people, who had been given by the Spanish government a chance of education, started insurgencies. Just like what is happening now. Those people whom given scholarship by the government turned NPA, and now an enemy of the state. But to compare, we are even facing worst and critical life now than what our ancestors experienced during the Spanish era.

Since you want a "Happy Reaction" tattoo, it'll be translated to "Maligayang Reaks(i)yon", if written in Baybayin, it'll be, "ᜋᜎᜒᜄᜌᜅ᜔ ᜇᜒᜀᜃ᜔ᜐᜒᜌᜓᜈ᜔". 😁 And, Baybayin can only be used in Tagalog, because other parts/province of the Philippines also have their own traditional/ancient writing system (but sadly, Baybayin is the only Filipino Writing System that is available in Google Keyboard).

@@fernandoandvanessa It's actually easy to learn if you compare it to other countries' writing systems. For every syllable/letter, you just have to add kuwit (coma) or tuldok (dot) on the top of the letter to have an e/i sound and on the bottom to have o/u sound. For example: Ma - ᜋ Me/Mi - ᜋᜒ Mo/Mu - ᜋᜓ And if you want to remove the vowel, just add "×" or "+" on the bottom. Ex. M - ᜋ᜔ Worded example: ᜋᜄ᜔ᜐᜒᜋᜓᜎ ᜈ ᜆᜌᜓ Ma/g/si/mu/la/ na/ ta/yo

@@seurn7801 However, we still see & hear a lot of new Filipino script enthusiasts using the misnomer (improper name) "Alibata" particularly from folks in the Philippines where Alibata is mentioned briefly in Filipino history and language subjects. While, those who are internet savvy are familiar with Paul Morrow's work and quite particularly this entry from his "Ang Baybayin" site about Paul Verzosa's reasoning for the term Alibata: "In 1921 I returned from the United States to give public lectures on Tagalog philology, calligraphy, and linguistics. I introduced the word alibata, which found its way into newsprints and often mentioned by many authors in their writings. I coined this word in 1914 in the New York Public Library, Manuscript Research Division, basing it on the Maguindanao (Moro) arrangement of letters of the alphabet after the Arabic: alif, ba, ta, “f” having been eliminated for euphony's sake." To which Paul Morrow added: "Verzosa's reasoning for creating this word was unfounded because no evidence of the baybayin was ever found in that part of the Philippines and it has absolutely no relationship to the Arabic language. Furthermore, no ancient script native to Southeast Asia followed the Arabic arrangement of letters, and regardless of Verzosa's connection to the word alibata, its absence from all historical records indicates that it is a totally modern creation."

Now about the baybayin why there are only a few evidence that shows it's existence is because the Spaniards were afraid that the Filipinos might use it for Coup. So they burned everything, books notes, posters even houses that has baybayin. Now, for me learning baybayin is ok and important because it is part of our history and culture which our ancestors used in various communications and arts. Well, on the video they said that yah the fund is one of the factor why they can't let the baybayin be taught in school like a regular subject. And also because of the wilingness of the students, maybe they are just underestimating us students, we want to learn it! We really do. They just need to give it try to include it as a regular subject in school. Well me, I do trying to learn baybayin all by myself because it is really easy and interesting to learn. 💓 Btw, thanks for appreciating different things about our country. Salamat and Ingat! 🙌🏼💓 #MabuFreakingHay!

I agree all what he says.. Before the Spaniards came to the Philippines our ancestors know how to read and write. We, as a Filipino people also have an own alphabet but sad to say rare people knows the original alphabet of the Philippines. Because of the influence of the colonisers in to the country, I am glad 'cause in my college days my Filipino Prof. Shared his knowledge about the baybayin I am happy that one of my dreams come true 😍😍 I really want to know more about baybayin... As a Filipino Citizen there's a lot of things that I need to explore, I don't want to be a foreigner to my own country my goals is to share also my knowledges to everyone 😊 Happy Reactions I love your videos especially you love the Filipino culture, foods and etc.. ❤️❤️❤️ From one of your fans Mahal ko kayo at ingat kayo palagi po.

I'm Happy that you reacted to this because I feel that Baybayin needs some recognition. I can write baybayin and it's so much fun to learn the writing system. it's so unique and pretty when to use, especially when you write your name or a beautiful word, it just different. I've been writing both the modernized and the original of the baybayin. I think that before the Philippines were colonized, they really have an education and the Baybayin s the proof, I mean it's like the other country (Japan, China, Korea, etc.) they have their own language and script, like the philippines.

hi Vanessa and Fernando... it's cool that you love the Philippines so much. Thank you! To comment on what the video said about our ancestors being already educated even before the Spaniards came to colonize us - yes, we've been taught in school about it and i think most Filipinos think it's true. You could search about the Laguna Copperplate Inscription (LCI), an ancient artifact that proves that the inhabitants of the PH islands centuries ago already have an established form of society/government, and that they can already read and write. Also, we still have at present, living with us, aborigines, the original people/inhabitants, with their culture intact including their ancient language and writing system. Look for the Mangyan tribes of the Mindoro Islands as an example. Well, again, thanks for sharing your videos with the world and showing everyone who cares that you love the Philippines. And Vanessa, i think you're pretty 😍😍😍 You're a nice couple! Stay safe, and keep your videos coming!

Actually we can read and write Baybayin, Yes. Baybayin is our oldest Ancient Alphabet and until now we are very greatful about our ancestors who preserved our alphabets❤ Fun Facts: Actually we also have traditional music, dances and even indigenous people ritual music. For example; In american alphabets - Maraming Salamat at Mabuhay! In Baybayin - ᜋᜇ̵ᜋ̊ᜅ᜔ ᜐᜎᜋᜆ᜔ ᜋᜊ̥ᜑᜌ᜔! We're hoping that your next trip going back here soonest you'll have a tattoo using Baybayin words ☺😘

English: I mastered Baybayin in just a week tbh, I am only confused with the "Kudlit" about 10% because of the E/I, and O/U. So I researched on improvised Baybayin scripts when it comes to Kudlits, now I managed to read them clearly. Hope this script will spread across the nation and the world soon. Thanks for sharing this documentary Happy Reactions.

It is said that before the Magellan came (the Portuguese explorer that the Spanish Crown commissioned), even the people in the Mountains already read and write our ancient scripts. And, there are at least 10 ancient scripts. Baybayin is used to write Tagalog language, Badlit scripts for Visayan languages, Kurdita scripts for Ilocano language, Kulitan scripts for Kapampangan, Haninu’o and Buhid Scripts are used in Mindoro, Basahan scripts in Bicolano, Tagbanwa scripts are used in Palawan, Kirim for Mindanaoan, and Jawi for Tausug language.

I think Baybayin alphabet will going to be enjoyable to learn and to use especially for younger generations if there's also Baybayin alphabet in Keyboards or keypads.. So that we can practice it and use it on social medias.. It's also good to introduce Baybayin smoothly until it will become a normal thing to us.. I just think it's kinda cute and better way to introduce our culture to foreign countries.. Thailand, Korean, Japan, chinese and so on.. They have their own Alphabet and that is so unique and interesting to study or to learn right.. I hope Baybayin will also rise as Philippines as a richer country in the future.. Btw I'm so thankful for your interest in our Country, my fellow filipino and to our culture. We love you, God Bless us all. Keep safe everyone 🤗😘😘

I have some additional info. About "Baybayin" it means "baybay dagat" in English "Sail to Ocean" and the Baybayin writing is came from the different shape of ocean waves and you can see how those Babayin scripts was written, it's just like a flow of wave, because ancient filipinos is sailors that came to the Island of the Philippines. Thank you so much Fernando and Vanessa for the videos that you reacted about the Philippines we love you all😊😆

I believe in it.As of now I am learning to read and write Baybayin through the initiative of our fellow Filipinos whom they dedicated their effort to make it alive again. It is also their advocacy to enlighten us to what and who we really are.An eye opening indeed.
