You actually CAN change button mappings now, as of the most recent firmware version! I changed my NES layout to have the “Y” button mapped to “B”, and the “B” button mapped to “A”. Also, if you use the no-intro roms for SNES, those should already have the headers trimmed :)
The idea of having a portable emulation device like an Analogue Pocket or Retroid Pocket 3 is definitely growing on me, but I definitely agree that changes/iterations are so frequent that I am hesitant to buy one of these devices now just to see a more streamlined/more powerful device get announced in 6 months.

Well that's the nature of tech so you'll be waiting a while. But you can probably rest easy knowing Analogue does it right and won't be doing something like this device for a long time. If you don't mind grabbing one of the more generic Chinese devices, yeah they'll probably spec bump more often. But honestly what will that really get you? A couple more cores available?

Regardless of the new tech that comes out, these devices will always play these retro games. If your goal is to emulate all consoles up to current then yeah you’ll be better off with a PC but if you want to play game boy today tether 4 years from now with the device you get today will still play that game boy lol

@@yoaiou Yeah exactly. If software emulation was all you were after the analogue pocket is actually pretty low on the list of things you should be looking at in the first place. It's primary purpose is hardware emulation, this is just a nice new perk on top of an already great design.

The Pocket won’t be updated for like a decade. It already has an overkill screen and FPGAs aren’t getting cheaper or better in the low end. You want a portable FPGA this is pretty much it.
First of all, there has been an UPDATE to the Analogue's firmware that allows for button remapping on the openFPGA chip (yey!). Second, I do not have a telegram and there is no contest. All those comments are spam and there's nothing I can do about it. Please report them if you see them.

I think it's neat that there's so many options for handheld emulators nowadays. Personally I bought my RG351M a year+ ago, and I'm perfectly happy to have that be my sole emulator handheld until PS2 is available in smaller form factors. IMHO it's all about finding something that works for you, buying it and enjoying it until there's a big leap that allows for more emulation options that your old one can't do.

I don't have an Analogue Pocket, I don't plan to get one, I don't even care that much about retro games. But goddamn, man. You're one of my favorite KZreadrs lately. I love your style so much. It's so obvious you just love games and the art form of it as much as I do, but at the same time you treat it with this simplicity and clarity that I appreciate so much. It's nice to just, listen to somebody talk earnestly and passionately about games. Good fucking job, man. And thanks, for what I know must be a considerable amount of work.
Getting mine delivered tomorrow from the latest batch release. Sooooo excited!!
I really enjoyed the pocket, but as you said, it costs too much and can't be bought readily so I was too afraid to travel with it. I also really missed the option for all the quality of life features such as tons of save slots, fast forward, and many more. And my old eyes also wanted a bigger screen.

what you said at the end about getting frustrated with the scene kinda rang true for me. like one month after I bought my RP2+ they finally announced the RP3 lmao. But it's a good problem to have honestly, I've had my eye on this scene since like 2014 and it's cool to see it finally in a place I had once only hoped for.
this thing just looks so gorgeous that i actually want to just own one, even though id probably never use it
It's exciting for users as well. Because right now, whatever month you try this in, you'll certainly find a good emulation device for emulation up to PS1 for ~60 USD, for emulation up to NDS for less than 100 USD, up to GameCube for ~200 USD etc., and with months passing, newer devices will up the ante again and again. As a user, you just have to make sure you buy one that _really_ suits your needs and wants and stick with it (the good ones get good 3rd party firmware to tinker with later on) instead of buying a new one every other month. I got my Anbernic RG353VS today, which is GBC sized and perfect for what I want and need. (Plus I still love the Miyoo mini, which I make sure I have with me at all times.
hey there, one thing I was missing: what about SNES being docked with a fullHD/4k tv? Are there problems there like being blurry, or is everything crystal clear there also? anyway: great content as always!
SOOOOOO the FM chip options are amazing. Those are some very special chips for a lot of synth heads like me. It's a very particular sound, with a kinda loaded history around them.

As a beat producer I would have liked to hear more about this aspect. The sequencer too, and midi options
This looks cool and all, hardware emulation also seems like a good option but something that I realized recently is that when I'm on the go I care more about the ease of use that some options can give more than a perfect or accurate representation, like you said fastforward, save states and the option to put the console to sleep in a sec without worrying about the game are great additions. Also It's really hard to justify It with that price over a normal emulation machine if one doesn't have the cartridges or really care about them. I realized that after my anbernic was stolen and destroyed by a dog, and I went back to use the old 3ds with the extended battery, damn I miss those save states, I need to manually close the gba games because the console doesn't go to sleep mode, after watching your videos multiple times I think I'll get the Pocket 3 or Miyoo Mini, not sure which one yet. the Mini seems nice and portable but the Pocket 3 ability to use It sideways for vertical shooters seems really cool.

This. I keep seeing reviewers gushing over the analogue because it now has rom support. But you could already do that for cheaper. And there's not a huge gap between fpga and emulation, especially when you're playing on a handheld.

This was a great thumbnail. Well done to the party repsonsible!
I feel like a fully equipped and jailbroke’d PSP GO was and still is the ultimate portable retro gaming device.
How's the battery life on this thing compared to handhelds with similar battery capacity? I assume FPGAs consume less power compared to software emulation but haven't seen anyone doing any tests to see if the difference is really worth it.
I would love to pick one of these and also a mistr at some point , currently got loads of systems and a pi4 and an anbernic 351 MP for emulating , so will have to wait for the wife to be out before getting it delivered 😂, great video Bob ,nice one

The Analogue Pocket is probably the most beautiful console out there. As Bob mentioned in the video, I’d be too afraid of incidental scuffs, scratches, and marks in general usage. While I tend to baby my electronics, this console is a work of art. I’ll be in trouble if the supply catches up to demand and it can become more of an impulse purchase. The only other hang up for me is the inability to emulate N64 (form factor and control limitations aside).
You got a Flair Pro? I should have known. I always see you making coffee and drinking lattes.
Emulation is so fun to watch I love these types of videos!
I think getting the RG351v took care of my retro games and I have a few upgraded GBAs to play real or reproduced cartridges
I want to do this! I'm still waiting on my pre-order from several months ago. I am in the Q4 shipping block.
Hey Bob, I'm probably pulling down the Core listing since now there's an API page that has the cores/install dates. Just figured you'd want to know since we keep taking stuff down that you reference in videos lol. The API Cores thing is listed in the Links on the r/AnalogueInc subreddit but we can get it added on both. We agree its a bit confusing lol.
I don't know if the Super NT hardware can support it, but I'd love to see the reverse where GB, GBA, and etc cores open up on that
@TheBroz

cant wait to try this on mine.
Probably gonna wait for the next revision of this or upgrade later on for now thinking of getting just a miyoo or a rg353v not sure yet can’t decide
The advancing technologies are a bit frustrating albeit cool. It's like you said as soon as you find something that works for you something better comes out. For me. It was retro collecting. Then it was upgrading the screens on my handhelds. Then the Nintendo switch expansion pack came out. Then everdrives. Replaced my physical cartridges because collecting cartridges is so expensive and now we have machines like the analog pocket and the miyoo mini plus
It’s exciting because it shows that the tech is evolving rapidly and that can only mean good things for us. That said I haven’t pulled the trigger yet on a emulator handheld because of that very reason. There always seems to be something off with one of the devices that turns me off from buying it.

Honestly my iPhone with Delta is the best emulator I’ve ever used. Add the Backbone remote and it’s even better. Organized. All artwork. Auto saves. So good.
The Pocket screen is really nice and I have a LOT of Gameboy cartridges, but everything else about it makes me want to just use my Experimental Pi PiBoy DMG when it comes to emulating. It’s buttons are better, it’s more comfortable to hold, and I just prefer Emulation Station. Maybe once the cores have had time to mature, I’ll revisit it. But right now, the screen and eventual Super Gameboy support are the only things the Pocket has going for it
Does the GameBoy Color built-in pallet options not work? Also, can you save GameBoyCamera pictures straight to the SD card yet?
It’s frustrating because I’m getting cold feet on buying ANY portable emulator, but at the same time I’m excited because it means one of these days someone is going to produce a portable emulator that will be almost perfect. That one with the Switch-like UI is really close.

Will the games play on your tv with the dock you can purchase from analogue?
I always like emulation videos Baab. It’s like you don’t know me…it’s my favourite thing.
Correction to your very first statement: The update opened up development for their main FPGA chip. The second, smaller, FPGA chip is what handles the OS and other functions. The main CycloneV chip is what all the emulators in the Pocket are running on. So all of these new, third party cores are running on the same physical chip that their cartridge based cores run on.
I want a hardware with bigger OLED screen with the controls on the sides, kinda like a psp without buttons at the bottom of the console with super tight bezels. Have you use or only held a psp slim recently? I think is the perfect shape for this type of products. Big enough to pack great hardware to run up to wii games probably.
Fun fact, Bean City is real. It's called City Bean, though.
I had a Gameboy pocket in translucent green as a kid, just picked up an analogue pocket in the same color scheme im pumped. $300 and it came with the dock and a case. This video is great because I don't really own gameboy games anymore, though I plan to grab stuff at pax this year

Just wish they could get these systems out faster. I’m on the 2nd shipment allotment and the only people that have one is the first shipment folks. Still have to wait to get the machine. Can you save game process or does it pause tell you return only?
I want to ask, I'm considering getting this, but do you have a pocket dock, how is it? I thought it'll be neat to have a way to connect to tv and play with controller, kind of like Nintendo Switch, or then use the pocket once a while. I do like buying many consoles, but it probably a waste of money but I just do it anyways. I have the Mega SG but want Super NT, but i think maybe I'll get both Pocket and Super NT, but maybe Pocket and Dock is all I need instead. But again I already have FX Pak Pro so that's why i do want Super NT.
