    Here's a fun fact, the first narrator for this movie, at 0:13 in this video, Glynn Turman, was the first actor cast to be Han Solo by George Lucas for Star Wars. But, 20th Century Fox Executives, in 1976 did not want a black lead. So, George Lucas was forced to recast the role of Han Solo.

    I liked this treatment. It touched on that tension in the arts. It happens that the new kids on the block are always a problem. Jazz was a problem; Rock and roll was a problem ; hip hop a huge problem. I liked seeing how she protected her career; I liked his determination to move the bases. The industry hasn’t changed all that much, nor the struggles of the artists. Ma was tough and smart but she still got cheated out of her royalties. But it’s her name that rings out not the cheats.

    One glaring mistake in Glynn Turman's introduction. Paramount Records was NOT in Chicago. It was in Port Washington, Wisconsin and produced about 25% of all "race" records during this period. The play can be forgiven for taking liberties, a documentary cannot.

  • @fonosmith1930s

    @fonosmith1930s

    3 жыл бұрын

    Paramount Records didn't have a recording studio in Wisconsin until 1930. They recorded Ma Rainey and others in Chicago recording studios. They also had recordings made elsewhere, e.g.,Ma Rainey had two record sessions in New York City in October 1924, otherwise, all her records were made in Chicago. Mayo Williams was Paramount Records recording director in Chicago, and he was African American, a black man. There is apparently no description or documentation about the c.December 1927 recording session, and that's led to people with their own agendas making up whatever accounts they want. The film didn't claim to be a documentary, did it?
