The Amazing Lofi "Toy" Sampler ~ YAMAHA VSS-200!!
Музыка
The Yamaha VSS-200 is pretty weird and also pretty wonderful. In this video I explore the various ways you can utilise the various functions for sound exploration. When you spend a bit of time getting creative you can really coax some beautiful sounds from this "toy" sampler!

Eat that fuzz button baby 🥂 Superb overview, that phrase sampling for that era is mixtape pause pushing-tastic. 👾
now you got me cracking out on gassy gearlust for the dinky old synths of my childhood. wow!! this is really, REALLY cool!!

These old cheapo keyboards often have some hidden magic! I’ve got more than I care to admit lol
Wow! It's literally mindblowing! It behaves like a professional synth, not like such a toy, I think.

I think these samplers were pretty mind blowing back in the day when they first appeared ~ and still sound great today!
I almost fell asleep watching this because of the keyboard and your voice I found to be soothing

Had mine since 1989 - awesome bit of lo fi kit - didn’t know you could unplug the mic - thanks for that gem.

Hello again just looked at the back of my 200 it looks like the mic is hard wired - did you have to open the case to remove the mic?

@dezb1 oh! We must have slightly different models. Mine has a coiled lead and can unplug the mic externally.

Top video mate. I love my VSS-30, instant fun and endless inspiration. Thanks for sharing.

nice man! I've always thought the VSS-30 looks way cooler! I really want one even tho I know the features are pretty much the same :D
I've got the 200, and don't spend enough time with it, but this video has reinspired me. The presets are probably the least exciting of all the PSS chips, but the sampler and FX makes it all worthwhile. Never tried resampling the presets, so I'll have to try this. A real lo-fi ambient machine. I've ended up accumulating 4 different Yamaha Portasounds, as they often have cool features on them. Just picked up a PSS 790 which has a vector joystick for blending presets. Add some reverb, and it can do quite dynamic washes and pads.

@@TheUnperson The 790 is pretty cool, awm samples but really dirty 8 bit dacs. It's a fun board. And the vector is fun.

damn what a find! Happy sampling :D
Fantastic video and demo, convinved me to buy my own VSS-200 and subscribe! What kinda cable did you use to connect the OP-1? Seems like it isn't a 3.5mm jack input.
I just picked one of these up as I wanted a lofi sampler keyboard but wasn't prepared to pay the going rate for a Casio SK-1 or SK-5 for the feature set they have... then I found the VSS-30, then saw the prices... then found the VSS-200 and was happy that it generally goes for less than the VSS-30. I plan to stick a UMR2 MIDI kit into it too. Your video was a nice example of what is possible with this sampler. I wish the FM pre-sets could be edited, like the PSS680 ones... but its probably more like a fixed pre-set PSS140 and VSS30 in a single box. But, why care when you've got an array of synths and noises to sample into the thing? Thanks for making this video, much appreciated.

Thanks man! I’ve got an sk1 and the vss200 is much better imo. The tone is way more usable (the sk1 is a bit too lofi for my liking!), and the ability to overdub your samples is an amazing feature. :)
@fatkev1983
Жыл бұрын
@@TheUnperson yeah the overdubbing kinda sold it for me, and I located one that was an ok price. That and I seem to have a collection of 80s Yamaha gear piling up now. I think I have an incurable disease. But then, I also have a collection of 80s Casio gear, ht6000 being my favourite, the SK1 would have also fitted in. So long as the Mrs doesn't find out the prices I've paid, or my baws will get booted.
I recently picked up one of these at a flee market for £10 and it works perfectly 👌

lovely! Hey... which Boss micro rack is that? It sounds fantastic with it!
Brilliant - what's the boss delay box in the top right corner? Or is it a mixer? I need that keyboard in my life :)

Thank you - it's a delay unit called RPS-10. Really crazy/fun noise box! :D
I just picked up one of these, but my mic seems to be built into the unit, it can't be unplugged as your seems to be? Could I insert a mic into the sample line in perhaps?
really love your vids! I was wondering what is the boss delay unit you're using here? Can't seem to find it online. (I'm currently the highest bid on ebay for a vss-200 hope I'll get it!)

hey thank you! The boss delay here is the RPS-10 (i've actually done a video about it a while ago) It's cool and weird box and not too rare too! Good luck with the ebay auction! These keyboards are kinda a bargain compared to how much the Casio SK-1's are going for 😮😀

Search on ebay for 'Acos Mic' there's one available for £15. Also check out reel to reel mics. You sometimes need to solder a jack on the end, but can often find really cool mics for cheap :)

I don't know why the price is so high on these. i have one and the sound quality is not great, especially on sampled stuff. I think there is a better model more worth the asking price but for the price of one of these you can pick up some much better gear. Still. I'm not selling. lol
