The Alt6502: Episode 9: Build and Test

Ғылым және технология

In this episode, the PCBs are magically soldered, and mounted in the computer. There is also a quick test run.
This is a part of the video series for the Alt6502 project. This project takes the Altair 8800 design, changes some historic circumstances and design decisions, and tries to construct the ideal 70's hobbyist 8-bit machine, based on the 6502.

Wheres the finale, watched the whole series waiting for a booting machine. Serial card, operating system coding .... I want it all!

When doing the serial card (which is working at "high" speed, and the video is 75% ready), I discovered a critical flaw in the single step function. When the user single-steps the CPU by pressing the buttons, that input is not synchronized properly with the CPU clock, causing some decode logic on the serial board to act up. I have to redo some core logic (which affects about 8 PCBs), which a heck of a lot of work. I've started doing that, but some "real-life" projects (you know work, house, cars, kids - that sort of stuff) has stealed most of my spare time so the progress is quite slow. Also, determined to not repeat the mistake, I've read up on synchonization and implemented digital circuit simulator (naturally there wasn't a free one that met my requirements) and that took some time. Right now, I don't know if and when this will be completed, which is too bad since I have great plans for all the things you mention.
