Impreza - The difference in price between the Crosstrek and the Impreza is roughly one trim level. For objectively the same vehicle, the smart choice is the Impreza because you live with and use the extra features everyday, you may or may not need the extra ground clearance of the Crosstrek. An Impreza made it through our snowstorm with nearly a foot of snow last year just fine, absolute rockstar going through long unplowed subdivisions in the Vancouver area.

I love your channel, especially the investigative pieces like on the EV battery issues. We are empty nesters seniors looking for a car that doesn’t yet exist. It should be: a hybrid minivan with, awd, over 8” ground clearance, easily removable second row with a totally flat load floor, great cruise control with lane centering that stays in the midline, Apple car play, and a metal roof. In the interim we have a hybrid fleet: a 2022 Nissan Leaf SV plus, and a 2023 Subaru Outback Onyx. Both are not in high demand, easy to purchase even below msrp.

I'm surprised the Nissan Pathfinder didn't make the list. We test drove one and liked it more than the highlander. I like that they FINALLY listened and moved away from the CVT in the Pathfinder, the ZF 9 speed is a significant improvement.

I'm here for the BMW enthusiasts. My family has had BMW's for years most of them used and the reliability has been great! Very minor issues if any. Yes, they are expensive all around, but you get performance and handling on top of quality customer service at the dealerships. I cannot say any of these positive remarks for Hyundai. I am leasing a 2021 Sante Fe and have already had several major issues with the vehicle and it has less than 23K miles. Not to mention the dealership is a nightmare to deal with. I am currently having issues with the transmission on top of a recall and the dealership cannot get my vehicle in until March!! They are always short staffed and overwhelmed with repairs. I will not be a customer of theirs after my lease is up. Most likely will be going back to BMW. Just my two cents! Thanks Zach and Andrea!! ❤

Thank you for another ranking, Andrea and Zack! I'm glad you're holding Mazda's feet to the fire. I was thinking of holding off buying my CX-9 for the new CX-90 but went conservative and bought a '22 as it's a proven MY rather than having a new model with teething issues. Had an issue with the front pkg sensors but that was replaced via warranty. It's still going strong and was very fun driving it twisty mountain roads. Happy New Year, and condolences on your fur-baby. It's tough losing family members.

The Accord, specifically, is a fun car to drive and very competent all around. When I test drove one back in 2018 with the 2.0T and 10spd, I was shocked. It rivaled my current car at the time, a 435i Gran Coupe (in Comfort mode). And it was head and shoulders better than the Mazda 6 I test drove at the same time. The only thing the Mazda did marginally better was take corners. Everything else was well below the Accord. The brakes and transmission were its weakest aspects.

I totally agree. One commenter at consumer reports had the new Accord as his car of the year. If you are a family that is not a car enthusiast in any way and all that matters is getting where you need to go safely and affordably also with excellent reliability the Honda Accord might be the best cars in America.

Yeay! The MB GLC300 made your list. I have the 2024 model and it is superb including its technology and big screen. Very quiet and luxurious feel. I love it! Thank you for this great video!

I'm glad the Mustang GT made your list!! I have a 2019 GT convertible and absolutely love it. I'm not sure I like the new design (look) of the new model but like anything I think I will get used to it. My daily is a Nissan Murano platinum and its an awesome SUV. When they introduce the new design and engine choices it will be on the top of my list to replace my 2015. Apparently no CVT on the new one which should be better even though I haven't had any issues with my CVT with 282,000 KM. Great channel and great video guys.

I have been following your reviews for years and love your work. That is why I was so surprised to see the Land Rover brand on this list.

I'm not sold on the Hybrids! They cost more and the regular 4 cyl is just fine for me!!!

@icecastle57 BINGO...I really think that the way TPTB are trying to nudge people into EVs only cars is by pushing these hybrids....I'm NOT buying it. They are far more expensive the extra economy on mileage isn't worth the extra money, and when they need repairs it's very expensive to repair them. I'll also be sticking with a good old ICE small gas engine only.

Hybrid technology is mature, 20 years old. My '07 Prius went 146,000 miles without a hiccup, 46 mpg, one headlight and the small battery ($175) in the trunk replaced. Iridium plugs looked like new at 125,000. Never needed brakes (ft pads, rear lining) replaced. What's not to like?

@@billurban1581 The price for one, and servicing and repair is more expensive than on a regular old ICE only vehicle. The goal in my book is to buy a VERY efficient and economical ICE car to begin with. Not have to bother with spending more money and have more complexity. With a good diesel, or even small car with a gas engine you can approach that same mpg number. In the USA we have been DENIED good small high MPG cars for decades.

Your critique of the Mazda CX90 is why its so important to review not just the top trims but the middle and sometimes base trims that are going to be the volume sellers. I know you both feel the same way. I've driven Mazdas for the last 16 years and like the brand but I'd definitely wait for at least 4 years before buying something that has all new tech for them. I do disagree with you two somewhat on transmissions that have to downshift quickly. Sometimes a smoother ride with better gas millage is nicer than something that revs up quickly and is always changing gears, especially if the engine produces good horsepower and torque across the rev range.

I own a 2018 X5 phev. Electric Range is not great barely 20ish km in real life but love it. The handling and everything is great. I bought a CPO and its been amazing to drive. For my next vehicle X5 is on the top of my list. Love your youtube videos. From London Ontario. ❤️

I own a 2018 BMW 530e phev with 100k km and love it. Great gas mileage, enough electric range in the city but welcome the upgrade to 100km in the 2024. Rock solid reliability only regular maintenance. Own a 2014 60Ah i3 with 120k km and have no issues with it, the battery degradation is minimal and i use it as often as possible. My older 2009 335xdrive with close to 220k km needed a full suspension refresh but runs relatively trouble free and is my son's daily. Hard on gas but very fun to drive. That's how it was back in the day. Still my performance favorite. Leaks like a BMW of the era but gaskets can be replaced easily for the dyi. Modern BMW's don't suffer from similar leaks. My son's 2015 328xdrive is very reliable with no major issues only regular wear items. His 1999 Z3 is another simple and uber reliable fun car. He also has a 2013 528xdrive and again it's reliable as anything, providing excellent comfort, gas mileage and low maintenance costs. We do all o f the regular and sometimes more difficult maintenance work which save us a ton of money since the dealer costs for simple things are out of control. Yes, lots of codes possible but never a major issue unless warranted like misfires due to failing packs that need to be replaced if you keep any car over 100k km.

Dear A and Z. I was pleased to see the Mustang on the "almost" list. I have owned 5 Toyotas, including a Supra and a Celica, and 2 Hondas, including a very nice Accord 6 speed coupe, but my 3 Mustangs were all equally or more reliable, and lots more fun. My current 2020 is the best car I have ever owned and my previous 2013 was second best. Thanks A and Z for including the Mustang.

Very true. Reliability seems to be the darling child of the automotive world and if everyone subscribed to that as the main reason for buying a vehicle, everyone would be driving Toyotas and Hondas. However, it's also important to acknowledge those who want to buy vehicles for other things like performance or capacity or looks. Those are legitimate reasons too.

I’d like to give the Honda Accord some love. I actually like the low key styling. It’s understated in its beauty. Then if you add that it has leg room for miles, the ride is very comfortable, and the reliability of a Honda, it’s an amazing package. That’s why I bought one. My first Sedan in 15 years

I have a 2021 X7. Not even 1 problem with it yet.. after owning Mercedes GLS, Cayenne , GV80. X7 is my favourite i have ever owned.

Good list, very surprised but pleased to see the Mustan 0:59 g GT. My last car before going to an SUV was a 88 Mustang GT, yes years ago but something about a 5.0 V8 and a manual transmission and yes unfortunately it will gone sooner than later.

I have a bmw 440i with b58 engine and a Lexus nx350h. Bimmer is now 5 years old and my Lexus is 9 months old. I’d say Bimmer is more reliable. Never ever done anything other than a regular maintenance on the Bimmer. With in one year owning a Lexus my battery died on me and car has to be towed to the dealership while I was doing the groceries and gas cap motor has failed on me. I’m glad Lexus replaced the battery and the gas cap is on the back order. I’m using the cable inside to manually override the opener in the mean time so inconvenient after spending close to 90k

sure we can. One more thing I forgot to add. Car play on the Lexus isn’t the best one either. It’s so hard to connect at times. I have to restart the car and my phone but with the Bimmer it’s seamless.

I own a 2019 X5, knock on wood 😅 only one oil leak so far from the rear differential which was fixed under warranty, in four and a half years I’ve owned it for. Drives better than any car/SUV I’ve ever owned, and it executes everything better than Mercedes and Audi (I’ve owned both, speaking from experience).

It's taken 10 years, but Honda finally caught up to the Ford Fusion Hybrid, which was an excellent car.

BMW used to have one of the best reliability out there, I remember many mechanics telling me their engines needed 50K just to break in.

I was surprised the CX-90 didn't make your Top 10 as you seemed to really love it during your review. The Honda Accord is one car that absolutely hits above its weight class but the deletion of the 2.0T with 10spd auto doomed it.

I can truly say, the Chevy Bolt should enter the history books as the EV equivalent of the VW Beetle. It is remarkable, fun, efficient and practical. It is our daily driver and we have a regular gas car for trips

Hey Zack and Andrea, i found it weird that you mentioned the chevrolet trax in your 10 best car video but no mention of the buick envista even in your 10 follow up cars, how so? I would love to see a list (maybe just the top 5) of vehicles that you both love based on pure emotion. Vehicles that you would love to drive regardless of their intent. Cast all logic and sensibilities out the window and just focus on what would give you the greatest automotive pleasure. What would those personal top 5 vehicles be??

I did look at the Impreza RS before buying my Crosstrek Sport a couple of weeks ago. The differences were few but notable to me: Impreza was very low to the ground, interior space felt a wee bit smaller especially head room in both front and rear, and perhaps the visibility was not quite as good as the Crosstrek likely due to the low seating angle. So far i love my Crosstrek Sport but my city MPG is way below the reported EPA mpg by about 5-6 mpg. I drive in “I” mode and am a conservative driver. Thanks for the great review as always!

Subaru's just tend to not hit the city figure. Here in Vancouver it's almost impossible, out city blocks are closely space together so the start/stop traffic makes it impossible to come close to however they tested for the city figure. Highway mileage is no problem. But also, mileage gets better as the engine breaks in, give it about 8-10,000 miles or so.

The are the EXACT same vehicle except for the 3.5” lift. How people come up with this interior space being different is comical. The only dimensions that are different is there is less total cargo volume in the Crosstrek because of the slightly lifted rear deck to fit in the temporary spare.

BMW...Blow My Wealth! The 4 I've owned sure did / do.. still own a 2011 335i convertible. That's my wife's name for them. ;)

I just got the new 2024 x5 plug in hybrid and it is amazing. The only complain I have is the back seats does not recline.

I recently purchased 2004 Hyundai Palisades Calligraphy which I did not think I would buy a Hyundai but after test driving Audi, BMW, Lexus, Toyota and a few others at the same price point, I came to the Hyundai, hands down the winner. Now we will see in 4 years if that was a good choice!!

As someone who is beginning to have mobility issues and doesn't want a vehicle which is too high or too low i was wondering if there are any sedans which i should consider.

I'm thinking of buying a new, small hatch/sedan in 2024. My brain says to buy one of the various Toyota Corolla, but my heart wants a 2024 Subaru Impreza RS. I just love the looks and the storage area with the seats down ❤ I would consider the Honda Civic w/the 2.0, and the Mazda3 is out, since it has the dreaded cylinder deactivation (yes, people have been having issues with it. Maybe not like GMs CD, but still there have been some).

It's really not that hard. If you go with companies like JLR, Stellantis etc... the quality isn't being engineered in over night, it's the the same corporate culture as Toyota. You can't just magically make a Jeep as reliable as a ForeRunner if you aren't using the same manufacturing processes and attention to detail. And then you have companies like Hyundai/Kia which havea reputation of increasing quality overtime but like clockwork something big comes up every year, be it engine problems or just sheer negligence in not putting immobilizers in lower trims. Plus, most cars are parts binned, so if you have a new model but same engine, gearbox and infotainment used in other models, you have a rough idea that generally nothing catastrophic or show-stopping is going to go wrong.

A normal Prius uses so little fuel, it’s hard for me to understand why bother with the PHEV version.

Sad not to see the SL on the top 10 list, but your comment about attainability helps put that in context.

I find the six cylinder badging on the CX90 amusing. I should get some in case I ever restore a 1929 Chevrolet.

Love my Prime 2023! Lucky I Found mine in 2 days! Switching my Q4 Etron for that! Here in Quebec its easy to get your hand on a HEV Prius, impossilble to get the Prime.....

Interesting that BMW have attracted the ‘unreliable’ tag. Over the years we have owned many vehicles, including GM, Ford, Jeep, Audi (2), VW (4) Acura (3), Toyota (2), Mercedes (3) and now a BMW 535ix (with M appearance package). The BMW was purchased new in 2012, and is now officially the oldest vehicle we have ever owned. Even today is looks and performs like new, and outside of regular oil changes, the only repair needed was a water pump at 90,000 km. The worst vehicle by far was the Jeep where we finally disposed of it at 13 moths old, during which time it spent over 100 days being warranty repaired at the dealer. We still have a Toyota Venza which was half the cost of the BMW 535ix when purchased new in 2012. Today the Toyota is valued slightly higher than the BMW and reliability has been about the same, however, how do you place a value on driving pleasure when the BMW is many many time more satisfying and fun? BMW’s are awesome vehicles, but the depreciation is a killer.

I have a 2021 x5 40i rwd. At 33k miles my alternator crapped out leaving me stranded on the hwy. The engine shut down on the road while driving. The dealership covered it under warranty but was really scary.

All Cx 90s manfactured after June 20 2023 for the US have recieved TCU updates. Having said that the major complaint of trans low end hesitation in the turbo 6s is actually the 18hp 48volt weakness. The PHEV has no such problem. It has a 177hp/199 tq electric motor. Also, Car and Drvers testing showed the PHEV is faster. 0-60 in 5.9 seconds. Turbo S was 6.2. That shows the big electric motors advantage.😎

Downshift hesitation is EPA driven. Faster earlier downshifts equals mpg degradation. Hard to fix once EPA mpg is established.

We are considering 2022 Honda Insight EX hybrid as a commuter car - any thoughts??

I feel like you guys must have got a bad CX-90 loaner. Our PHEV Premium's transmission in Sport mode is snappy as hell. We've had no issues with it and love it.

The Honda has made my top 5 list, and I really don't care for sedans. Reliable, economical, handles well, decent amount of pep. Put some racing stripes and whatnot on and it's all copasetic.

I agree with Andrea that the Accord should have been a top ten. It may be bland and boring looking, however most family sedans, crossovers and SUVs have generic styling these days. Most SUVs are also neither "sporty" nor a true "utility" vehicle either but that doesn't stop people from buying them in huge numbers.

I always read such conflicting information on bmw reliability. Sometimes it seems like the issues are primarily past 4-5 years and I often wonder if on average BMW drive their vehicles harder simply due the brand being known as a driver’s car. I’ve been tempted by the X1 as a fun downsize vehicle with good efficiency, respectable cargo space, and still great in winter driving.

I had a 2015 X1 for six years, bulletproof, one warranty repair aside from airbag recalls. Only negative, rough ride due I think to the run flat Goodyears. Never figured out why a car built in Leipzig Germany would have Goodyear tires.

How does the Mustang's screen read when you are wearing polarized sunglasses?

Sad not to see the Ford Maverick Hybrid on this list. Watched your review about it I was sure Z could convince A to get one :-)

We drove the Maverick Hybrid in 2022, so we didn't add it to the list. Great vehicle though if you can get one.

We rented a BMW X5 for a full week and hated it. Though it drove well we found the tech frustrating and the cabin a little small for the price.

Once again the great LINCOLN CORSAIR GRAND TOURING misses, yet it so many great qualities.
