I own a 170 and I recently purchased the 162. After I got it home and started looking closer at I realized that Stihl had really cut corners on the 162. No nose sprocket and only one , not two, retention bolts on the chain bar which is the main fulcrum point on any chain saw. I then started to check the reviews of actual owners of these 162’s. This saw is tuned to reduce emissions which always results in lower performance. This was verified by virtually EVERY cutting time comparison between the 162 vs the 170. The 170 beat the 162 in every test. The reviews were so bad that I returned the 162 without ever starting it. When I returned it I felt a little guilty and apologized but the dealer told not to worry because he had a number of his customers return their 162’s for the same reasons.

Nice one, what I didn't like is the access to the air filter and the clips from the air filter cover.

i have a MS172 really like it. best chain saw i ever owned. i used to by big box no brand saws...all rubbish. this Sthil is fab. my BIG tip. use Sthil Motomix fuel. stable, proper mix, keeps saw happy and clean. oh....and but metal log teeth accessory for saw €6.

A stratocharged saw has been sold in Europe under the MS 170 name since 2013. In addition to the obviously different engine/cylinder and carburetor, it also has a different ignition module.

I have a 170 and a 271. I love thrm both. You can tell the 170 is alot cheaper made then that 271. I really like the 271 that is a sweet saw. I only heat my house with wood so i use them both alot and they both hold up great. Im afraid in a few more yrs i wont beable to use a saw because of my back. Its hard enough the way it is. Love the channel guys !! It looks like u have a very nice shop with lotsa parts. I wish i woulda learned more bout them little motors my back may not be in as bad shape. Ty for the video !!

I have just seen these models introduced here in Virginia just recently. I have an MS170 and recently bought a battery powered M60 for my daughter’s use. I did not see the 162 at Ace Hardware at the beginning of March.

The moral of the story is quickly go out and buy a 170. It has more power better made and will last longer. All these cheaper models are made in China so I suspect they are probably assembled in the USA a bit like Dewalt tools.
