Still not Pro without the ability to repair/eject/format external drives. Apple made a big deal about external drive support, and for some applications like video editing it is necessary. So why is it that there is no way to eject or format drives without having to use a Mac or PC?

@@hloutlaw There are countless issues with the ipad that can easily be fixed with software, but apple has taken far too long. Such expensive devices deserve better than being drip-fed these features. The proof is in the pudding as iPad sales are down, while more and more people are getting mac books.

I create, edit, upload videos and a podcast weekly. I must be extremely “lucky”. Never had to reformat any of my 3 Samsung external drives. I transfer back and forth almost daily. Should we be able to repair? Sure… but I’ve never needed to do it and never had to figure it out for any of my employees either. We run a college on iPad pros and external hard drives.

The multiple selection with the cursor was available on iPadOS 15.

7:28 just tried that on my iPad which is on ipad OS 15 still and it works the same way. You can drag the cursor to select multiple items.

3:13 That exact same view was there on iPadOS 15 as well, file size included. The only change is that now we get to see folder file size as well.

I don't see the file size column in the app. I have an 11-inch iPad Pro M1. Is there a way to activate that option so that the size appears in addition to the date?

🐬 My favorite feature has to be stage manager. Its the perfect way to add multitasking to the iPad without forgetting what the iPad is all about (ease of use).

🐬Great video Fernando! I actually love iPadOS and the direction it is going. I also love the Files app. Did you know you can set up direct access to your computer with the "Shared" feature in the left column towards the bottom? I use the Files app quite a bit. Have not used iPadOS 16 yet, but definitely looking forward to it. Stay safe bud!

If you lock the screen and wait some seconds will eject the drive. If your drive have leds they will turn off after ejection.

The iPad OS 16 Files app is an improvement, but it is still missing important functionality, like formatting external drives and SD cards. This is another example of why an M1 iPad Pro is still not a standalone computing device. I can do all this stuff on my Chromes OS Tablet which came with a magnetic keyboard cover and trackpad, and it was only one eighth of the cost of my iPad Pro (including magic keyboard)!

Actually iPadOS 15 you can right click on a folder in files > share. And you can see the folder size under the title.

Yeah a lot of this stuff is old. Like list views and sorting. I feel like a lot of KZreadrs don’t really do their research on this and go by public perception

Great video! Was hoping you would have covered how to play MP4 files from Files. I copied over a number of MP4 files but do not want to have to import them to something like Photos.

Big improvement but very slow on my ipad pro 10.5 inch

There is absolutely enough memory for floating apps on current non-pro iPads. Android devices have done this for years. Samsung S7 runs DEX smoothly, with a desktop, file system, overlapping windows. It has 4GB of RAM. Apples A12 did it during the launch of the M1. And no, the full desktop version of Photoshop is not available on the iPad. It is an extremely limited version with only select features. If Apple had announced that in IOS 16 you could run the desktop versions of Photoshop, MS Office, it would have been wonderful, and there would be a rush to buy M1 iPad Pros. Not so much for this.

I wonder how much they will change it as the Beta’s progress…

One thing I always do in my mac is renaming a .ppt or .key file extension to a .zip, and then extracting it for me to being able to use a single video or photo within a presentation. Could it be done with iPadOS 16? I guess time will tell.

Hey Fernando, I want to start using my iPad Pro M1 as a mini PC with basic functionality, web, streaming, email etc. I need a display port USB C adapter that I can also plug my wired USB mouse and keyboard into. Can you recommend one that won’t break the bank? Need display port not HDMI as that’s the only port I have free on my monitor.

List view is not changed from iPadOS 15 - that was already there with the same info and sorting features.

One downside of the Files App I've discovered so far. Previous versions used to 'remember' where earlier versions of a file were stored on the phone, and copy an update there (asking for permission to overwrite the older version of course). On IOS 16 trying to copy a selected file brings up the browser menu again and I have to manually navigate through the phone's folder structure to choose where to copy it to. Its a real pain having to do that each time for frequently updated files - does anyone know if there is a setting to make it act like IOS 15.x and earlier versions.

So, the list view is in iOS 15 already, as is the filter by kind, tag etc. that’s not new to iOS 16. Columns is new but you didn’t show much of that..

What about a real implementation of cloud services in files on iPad? Is it finally possible to have the whole cloud folder offline by default and that files doesn’t deinstall automatically the cloud service when there’s not a lot of space in the iPad?

That actually came with ipadOS 15.5 or something like that and it’s available right now for icloud. I'm 95% sure. (I don't use icloud that much)

Why dont apple just put finder to ipad and iphone tho?

imagine being apple, where full external display mode is a new os update.

With the price that coast it’s so ridiculous to have this few options that an 5 years old android tablet already have and more Then things get even more ridiculous when that update it’s basically just for the M1 iPad Pro ,the others will have new wallpaper lol

I hope it supports better NAS access so if you have many shared network assets you can name them instead of trying to remember an IP. And I hope it remembers network assets you setup every time you restart. The current Files app is so lame it's a joke. Yes, they are moving in the right direction but it's still in increments that are way too slow. I should have all the features of Finder on my IPad, period.

The file manager 🐬 is a lot better than before. It still feels ‘fiddly’ to use, but then to do the stuff I need to do most of the time on my ipad, it’s fine. I’ve never been totally happy with any file manager though - windows, mac or iPadOS. Definitely not Linux, every Linux I’ve used has had an annoying file manager!

This all great but they need to improve the search function it’s pretty much useless.

I still dislike the way that stage manager is implemented on the ipad itself. Having 2 windows open gives you less screen realestate then in split screen view due to all the space left around the edges.

@@chidorirasenganz The difference that I can see here is that with stage manager there is a limit to how far you can expand the windows, it seems in every example of multiple windows being shown, there is always a lot of space around the edges you can't place the windows on. In an ideal world, just like on a desktop, you should be able to use all of the free space on the screen.

@@TonyW86 you can full screen a single windows in stage manager and of course there’s still split view. But the main reason to have floating resizable windows is to not have one or two apps take over the full screen

Okay, now try copying a folder to Google Drive. HAHA you can’t. Google Drive doesn’t recognize folders in the Files app. This is why Files app still fails to live up to its name. It’s a different story on MacOS. No problem with folders there. Now, why is that?

@@christianr.5868 stage manager is the only thing to consider but it also has limitations . Instead Of stage manager they should have give an option to run 4 apps like in windows 11 . In Stage manager , the side bar doesn’t go , you don’t get full screen . Also they should have released iPad version Final Cut Pro and other pro apps. Having 7000 geekbench score for m1 chip , apple is not making it worth.

@@placidity13 stage manager is modular, so you can pick to have certain things on screen and certain things off to give yourself more space. And yeah I'd love to see pro apps. Especially apps like blender on the iPad, but we'll just have to wait and see. Apples definitely hindering it right now though

I think this would never have happened under Steve, the iPad was never suppose to be a Mac, but we keep trying to turn it into one, what’s next ? Multiport ? This new stage manager sucks. You can’t place your apps wherever you want, but the more I think about it, it’s logical, you don’t always have a precise pointer connected to this, so it has to support use it with our big fat fingers. I think the Blink app is actually what a Pro app in the iPad is supposed to be, is a detached, headless tool, I can’t do shit on it, but connect to a server, and you have al the power you could ever need.

There is nothing "PRO" about anything in this update. Apple has simply selected to block it from running on all of the other iPad's to throw a bone at users who were bitching that the M1 iMac still wouldn't run "heavy" apps, despite clearly having all of the hardware that is used in the original M1 MacBooks. iPad Pro users wanted to get Logic Pro, Final Cut Pro - at least the heavy apps that Apple could provide easily. Then maybe allow Microsoft to install a full version of MS Office (with proper payment, of course). And someday maybe Adobe might provide desktop versions of PhotoShop, etc?? Instead Apple just throws out some "eye candy" visual updates that could easily run on the base iPad, probably even earlier. And blocking even the newest iPad Air with M1, as well as the latest iPad Mini, which runs the fastest A15. Bad move, Apple. I'm not buying a new iPad. Everyone should be aware at this point that in the coming 2023 update the "pro" apps might require an M2, sorry about all of you that just bought the M1!!

Actually they added stage manager because people were obsessed with having “floating resizable windows” like on windows and macOS. Pre M1 iPads don’t have the memory or ssd specs to handle stage manager. There’s already pro apps on the iPad including photoshop lol
