The Algarve Portugal Vlog (Disabled Travel)

The Algarve Portugal Vlog (Disabled Travel)
I visited The Algarve with my family, I have autism, ADHD and Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and have three neurodivergent children.
Travel has been difficult for us in the past, but with careful planning and support we had an amazing holiday.
I hope you enjoy my vlog.

Welcome to the Algarve 😀 I'm from the UK but moved here a few years ago. My kids are ND and living here suits us, one is doing online school and the other is at a school with a shortened school day so less stress and more downtime 😀 Hope you all have a nice holiday (with a good amount of spoons!).

I went to Portugal about 5 weeks ago (The Algarve, Albufeira etc.) with 2 mates, I’m 18 and autistic and have emetophobia (I just watched your video on it too). I decided to wear a sunflower lanyard for the first time in my life, in the airports - Luton airport were so understanding of autism, so was Faro, and EasyJet is just the best. I managed to get fast track just by making eye contact with the security guy on the way there, and after I got back to UK I noticed a massive queue for the security checks so I put the lanyard straight back on and within 30s a guy on security who guided me through the fast track (with my friends too since they were my immediate family for this trip). I wasn’t as anxious for this trip because I had already been to The Gambia and Belgium with school, so I was able to successfully eat out at ‘Urban Pizza’ who also had takeaway boxes which made me more likely to eat because I knew if I was too nauseous to eat I didn’t waste it. This holiday was amazing.

Thanks for the vlog Ella, I’m autistic, disabled and also going to Portugal in a week so it was nice to see your experience. I know traveling and holidays can be very disregulating but I’m glad that you’ve made these steps for yourself and had a nice time 🌞

Seemed like a great vacation. Very interesting to see the house and pool and also get insight into your trips. The advice to have a first easy day is wise, I will try to remember that.

very happy for you, Ella! I have issues with holidaying as well but once I get into the holiday zone, I'm usually ok but long distance travel can be a challenge but seeing you did it felt very satisfying to me. thank you!

“There’s something about being on the sea that makes me feel less significant” this is my whole reason for choosing my KZread name. Sea/sky. I’ve been wondering whether or not a cruise may be a good choice for autistic people? Because you can do as much or as little as you want, retire back to your cabin the moment everything becomes overwhelming, And breathe in and out along with the waves on the ocean. Purple Ella, as strong and beautiful as ever. Have a wonderful holiday.

So lovely to see you enjoying a holiday. I can't cope with Airports and Air travel so holidays can be a problem. I went to Disneyland Paris and had a meltdown because my Wife had me walking so much I got blisters on my heels so I had extreme pain walking. She told me last night she doesn't want to be my wife anymore and is sick of my meltdowns. I have been married for 15 years and my Wife refuses to understand Autism and ADHD (my main conditions) and has had me working a job for 14 years that I hate. Now I have trigger finger which is very painful and I need surgery for, so it's very hard for me to do the job anymore. My Wife's answer? I have a bad knee, get on with it. I clean Rabbits and Guinea Pigs and the sensory issues of being boiling hot in summer covered in sweat, tired and dirty makes me meltdown. Now I can't clean them anymore she's decided to get rid of me. I have been treated really badly and taken advantage because of my helpful nature. I'm glad there are autistic people out there in decent, loving relationships that are accepted and loved for who they are and not what they can do for someone. To be honest, this marriage has been such a horrible experience I'm going to write a book about it. Thank you for all your helpful content.

My last holiday to Amsterdam in 2019 was so traumatic I can't imagine ever travelling again! 😱 I wouldn't recommend going there if you use a mobility scooter - my friend was discriminated against with hers on public transport & in shops & people had no patience with her using it to get around on pavements either!

But autism is not a disability like being in a wheelchair. I’m like you, I have adhd with autism, never ever in my life I have called myself disabled and asked for special treatment at the airport or somewhere else.

Being deaf is not a disability like being in a wheelchair. Being blind is not a disability like being in a wheelchair. Just two of the obvious ones but there are many disabilities that do not require a wheelchair.
