The Air Force is pitting its AI-piloted F-16 against humans in 'complex dogfights'
On Wednesday, the U.S. Air Force revealed that its ongoing effort to field artificial intelligence (AI) pilots for combat aircraft has already seen AI-piloted F-16s take on their human counterparts in complex air-combat exercises.
This effort is part of DARPA’s Air Combat Evolution (ACE) program, and is seen as an essential step toward equipping forthcoming 6th-generation fighters with AI-enabled drone wingmen.

@@RealisticFPS_It’s possible to go beyond the 9g mark in various aircraft and though we train pilots to hold a 9g turn for at least 30 seconds, both pilot and aircraft can go beyond that. For example, the new Gripen-E has a G-limiter of 9g, but in emergency situations it can be overridden up to 12g. The issue with this is that it will have to go through a very thorough maintenance process afterwards. I don’t know what the G-limit is on the F-22, nor how far they went in testing it to determine how far beyond any G-limiter onboard it can actually go as it’s not a plane I’ve had the honour of flying. The only thing I am sure of is that pilots are capable of going quite a way beyond the 9g mark for short periods of time. In fact, there was an Indy car that crashed and the driver survived 214g, something that was more than 8x the lethal level. I have no idea how far the structural integrity of aircraft is pushed in testing, but I’m fairly certain that pilots can manage short periods of time at G-forces higher than any aircraft is capable of. Ejection seats put around 20g’s on pilots as well, just for reference.
All of a sudden, obsolete fighters can be brought back into service as loyal wingmen. We can build older fighters on the cheap.

Yes technically, although it still would be better to make a new aircraft since the cockpit wouldn’t be needed anymore. And Terminator 2 is like 25 years old now, so maybe they haven't even seen that one, or Terminator 3 that actually told the story of how the machines took over in the first place. @@i-love-space390 Lol you have no clue on AI algorithms and software, Terminator and stealth are movies made by people with no clue but sniffing long lines of a white powder and making people believe a made up fantasy. You must think light sabres and ewoks are real too. AI is a programme of 1 and 0 made by a human being and the programme is limited to what you programme it to do. This AI is programmed dog fighting simulations made by humans. it can not think all of a sudden to go wipe out a entire city until it runs out of weapons or see humans as a target. This AI has a limit and it probably does not even have tanks or ships added to it's target identification yet. You think this is new. Australia MQ28A Ghost Bat is 3 years old. it has AI and it has limits to what it can do. is a level of AI in all military equipment these days and has been for years.
Apparently Maj. Rob Deebel left his F-16 unattended on the ramp. Getting into his car he butt dialed his personal AI in his phone and the X-62 took off autonomously went ROGUE.
F-15s have been using what you call AI since the 1970s if necessary, Douglas was given a contract in the early to mid 80s to update F-16s electronics to similar capabilities, This must be new for today . . .

Airpower!
It's like an X wing fighter with it's AI droid.
I remember the VISTA/MATV programs back from the late 80s/early 90s when thrust vectoring was put on the F-16. I wonder if its the same aircraft being used as the X-62A...
Well I've seen how this Ace Combat game goes. Fingers crossed for the arsenal bird next
Alex, obviously you missed the Memo on the Liquid from Solid Morphing Robot just released. No, I read the article the other day but don't remember the Builder...DARPA, MIT, ?
Uhh, that would be 2D thrust vectoring; being single engine, it can only vector for yaw and pitch. Twin engines, with 2D thrust vectoring, could also vector for roll, providing 3D thrust vectoring. See some of MiG and Sukhoi's latest for twin engine aircraft, with each nozzle doing 2D thrust vectoring, for that. The F-22 has twin engines but only has pitch and roll, no yaw. The VISTA is built to be able to simulate just about any other aircraft. So if you want to try something crazy in a B-52, but don't want to risk an actual plane, you can upload the performance parameters of the B-52 to the VISTA and let a human pilot try it out. And, if you get into an un-recoverable situation, you can switch back to being an F-16 and get out of it. Being single engine, there are limits to how far the simulation can go but you get the idea. In short, this plane has better maneuverability than most F-16s ('cuz 2D thrust vectoring nozzle) and the flight control system is built to take significant software changes, on little notice. Nice to see they're still flying it, even if they are using it to work on SkyNet version 0.1.

First the new Atlas robot and now Skyborg... Skynet is inevitable...
We already know NGAD fighter drones will be more maneuverable without their flesh bag pilots holding them back, but what else will eliminating the cockpit do? Increased range, for sure, since we won’t have that needless protrusion or all the manual controls/indicators. Heck, the whole thing could be replaced with a fuel tank or weapons bay. I’d love to see you brainstorm about this!
@4Fixerdave

It also eliminates the risk... which is not always a good thing. Take, for example, the standard "testing" done by nations. Russian aircraft routinely fly towards NORAD/EU airspace and we dutifully send up interceptors. Response is timed, and everyone goes home. Everyone tries to be professional. Nobody does anything stupid (except the Chinese). What happens when the interceptor, or the bomber for that matter, has no pilot? Shoot it down? You kill a pilot and it's a big deal, an international incident... best avoided. You shoot down a drone and, well, remember the last time that happened? Remember the consequences? Yeah, me neither. Like it or not, pilots are often a tripwire defence. You don't shoot them down because killing them creates problems. Losing that could actually increase the risk of escalation.

May I recommend the Anime _Battle Fairy Yukikaze,_ based on a series of short stories and later novels starting in 1984? Yukikaze (Literally: Snow Wind) is an aircraft AI, who is fully capable of taking control of the aircraft if the pilot should become incapacitated. Later "loyal wingman" AI aircraft are introduced (although not called that) who take direction from the pilot or the main fighter AI. All of this originating in fiction 40 years ago. We've just finally advanced our technology enough to catch up with our imagination.

would be interesting to fin out what kind of sensors the AI relies on to track the opposing fighter. Are they onboard or does it receive updates from AWACS. It will need to track the other aircraft's position to plot its next moves. After this I supposes they will need to detect/track incoming missiles and plot defensive moves.

Two of those things go at one another and it was a high speed ride hoping to survive. There were some Gundam mangas that depicted similar IAs. Star Trek had the M5.
Queue Terminator percussion theme… “No reason to worry about Skynet!” THAT’S WHAT THEY WANT YOU TO THINK!!!
Skynet already exists, although it is a military communications network not a combat system.
Wow, I’m remembering the Star Trek episode, “The Ultimate Computer”, where the computer controlled Enterprise took on 4 other starships…. I hope things fare better 😂
I imagine the Vista comprehensively spanked the standard Viper, unless there were some restrictions on the AI. Seems a bit of an unfair matchup for a human piloted Viper, especially since the AI isn't hampered by G-LOC. The capability of the Vista demonstrated in test flight footage is pretty insane.
I didn’t know Gary from nerdrotic did military videos as well.

Gary wouldn't be able to see the camera without his glasses
This is absolutely insane. If this ai is successful enough then fighters of the future can be made for some absolutely insane gs
"By your command" yea, this is some scary shit.
anyone else reminded of the movie stealth.
Is there anywhere they can conduct a live fire exercise? 🤔
This is a great idea. The AI jets will be able to complete maneuvers too extreme for the biology of human pilots. This will be the next thing.
Didn't I see this somewhere🧐
Awesome development. Soon, there will be no need to risk human lives in the cockpit.
Guarantee ya some higher ups played Ace Combat 7

The F-22 was piloted by Trigger himself as a ref
F-16 is most versatile platform ever. They should have a third nickname of "Chameleon". It can be programmed to act and maneuver like so many adversary aircrafts.
