The Air Force is adding AI PILOTS to 6 MORE F-16s!
The U.S. Air Force has announced plans to equip a small group of F-16 Fighting Falcons with artificial intelligence (AI) pilots, as part of a program dubbed Project Viper Experimentation and Next-Gen Operations Mode, or VENOM. This revelation comes just about a month after the branch announced an AI-piloted and heavily modified F-16 known as the X-62A successfully flew a variety of air-combat missions over the span of two weeks this past December.
Project VENOM is the latest development in the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Skyborg autonomous aircraft teaming architecture, which aims to pair crewed fighters with AI-enabled drone wingmen for the 21st-century fight. The Air Force is investing heavily into this concept, with a reported $50 million allocated in its 2024 budget proposal to the VENOM effort alone.
Let's dive into Project Venom and what it means for the future of air combat...

Yeah that's useful but what if their are drone wingmen that can turn of some of their stealth and act like a flare, drawing away an incoming missile, then taking some lethal g's and avoiding the incoming missile entirely, then resuming previous operations. Oh and the second wingman could act as a meat shield should wingman 1 fail in drawing off the missile. The AI can also allow the pilot to just tell it to kill a target and the AI can decide what missile to use from what airframe. AI wingmen and an AI copilot can allow a pilot to turn into a guy playing an RTS with no lag. Also it would be better than RTS's AI. Oh and the AI can get updated and share its knowledge with every other operational airframe in the military theoretically at any time. We could theoretically have the AI analyze the capabilities of missiles launched at US airframes tell the other AI use its knowledge to come up with at least don't do maneuver's and update and refine that list into a list of maneuver's to do. Lets say we get into a hot war with China they launch a wave of new missiles at US aircraft. Every nearby airframe records the information and uploads what every one of those missiles does. Then either as a whole, or using a super computer back in the states, the information is compiled, analyzed and redistributes to all other US AI equipped airframes. Then when the next wave of missiles comes in there is some X% increased survivability. The entire process done faster than any means of information distribution with regular pilots. Oh and the AI can tell the pilots all at once relevant information like max range, when the missile starts directly tracking, maximum altitude, etc.

Even if the integration is more basic being able to simply tell the AI to track, interrogate, and lock a potential hostile would be quite useful. Where I can really see AI being used effectively is in SEAD or Electronic Warfare. Put an AI in charge of a capable jammer and things are going to get ugly for anyone on the receiving end.

It sounds like we are going from manual, to semiauto. This is a great and fair bit of work Alex, awesome video!
Don't underestimate the difficulty of autonomy in ground vehicles. It is actually a MUCH more cluttered and complex environment than aircraft in the air. An aircraft generally has a handful of other aircraft it is concerned with at any time and probably some some ground based anti-air assets. Ground vehicles have to sort through hundreds if not thousands of other objects, both in the natural environment and those related to human activities.
Australia is also well down this road (runway) with the Boeing Ghost Bat (named after an Australian Bat) to fly alongside and under the control of the F35. Six prototypes have been built and the US is considering it for use with their F35 fleet.

Apparently it's actually exponentially more difficult to do autonomous driving in a car than in a airplane. I mean they have had Autopilot for a very long time but not in cars. Granted a fighter jet in maneuvers is a lot different than a jetliner. The problem with cars is the absolute insane amount of variables in the environment of roadways and intersections. Cars don't have radars to tell them another car is going to run the red light and smash into the side of the car or the ability to predict the actions of others. Fighter jets have insane amounts of radar and sensors for situational awareness.

The Air Force has been working on this sort of thing for 40 years. When I was back at Wright-Patterson AFB in the 80's, it was the "Pilot's Associate". The problem is that pilots are subject to information overload. During the Vietnam War, there were many instances where pilots simply couldn't hear their missile warning systems, and were shot down, because they were too busy dodging MiGs. The idea, then, is to have the AI take over everything that's not absolutely necessary for what the pilot is currently doing.

I should think that plugging an AI into DCS would give it a significant amount of simulated experience that would help it level up in the real thing.

Furthermore, following a lot of what is going on in Ukraine now, a properly trained AI system with sensors to view variously sized and variously speeding objects and report what the pilot needs to react to would be, well, game changing. I wonder if data is being gathered over the region now which could be used to train AI's in this area of sensor management on the battlefield.

I'm not a software engineer but I can say that according to some folks in Ukraine several countries are following every aspect of the war in great detail. I just wonder if they are slow walking some of what Zelenski is asking for because they want to see what Ukraine can do with less. Like Biden's determination to get Ukraine to take A10s because no one else wants them. Zelensky's likely response was "I might as well shoot my pilots before they get into the plane since we don't have air superiority." Since Ukraine had the 8th largest defense weapons industry that employed over 250,000 scientists, engineers, programmers plus other staff in 2014 their people know weapons. So they aren't Mcgivering anything. The US and Russia, after Russia annexed Crimea, plus a few other countries, forced Ukraine to choose to continue with its weapons industry or go to more peaceful pursuits that would eventually lead to joining NATO. They feared that Ukraine would become a "rogue" nation because Russia bought 30% of their weapons from Ukraine and Ukraine stopped all of its projects for Russia and even refused to send spare parts. So the conclusion was that while still having 70% of its customer base like India Ukraine could sell its knowledge of building and maintaining nukes to anyone who would pay. That is the US in partnership with Russia, if you can imagine it, working to make Ukraine even more vulnerable after Crimea was annexed by Russia. Guess who was the VP at the time? If you guessed Biden you are spot on. So I think I know why Zelenski and Biden argued last summer. Now Zelensky is reduced to begging for war materials and I am furious but I'm still researching how and I know the why, greed, but it means digging into every think tank and I've run across and some language barriers as well. I'll get to the bottom of it one way or the other.
I wonder what it would be like to have a fight demonstration team, like the Blue Angels, with AI pilots?
They will be networked so when used in the real world they can rely back how the fight is going so future missions will learn from success or failures outside the lab.
Unified Command and Control just keeps growing and growing.
Project Venom and cerebral loading (situational awareness, performance, choice) are critical relationships between the pilot and AI: sort of like taking your gifted son to work and letting him help. Whatever results AI research must not take a holiday but press on in due diligence.

With stronger materials in the wings and fuselage, an automated plane could pull 10+ G's and negative G's that a human pilot couldn't physically handle.
Good stuff.
amazing points about AI love the vids
AI in a F16 us actually pretty smart, that plane can do things pilots physically can't handle. AI as the ability to recover the plane once the pilot reaches G'lock it can save his life by retreating and recovery. Now if you just turned it over to the plane you will need to have someone still in control of the weapons.
So when you get shot down by your own jets you know you done fked up.

I agree with you about the name "Venom." They should have gone with Achilles instead because the Achilles heal in this aircraft is not overloading the pilots brain with too much data. You, Alex, have revived my love of jets. Growing up across the lake from a Air Force Base which was closed in the 80's and an Air National Guard base designated in 1946 as the 134th Fighter Squadron now 158th Fighter Wing, just 20 minutes away I fell in love with jets at an early age. I am giving away my age but I remember being a child and jumping up and down in excitement every time they broke the sound barrier as their path was right over my parent's house. It was breathtaking to me, adults not so much. Our yard was full of kids when we knew they would fly over. I've been told it was a fluke but one of the jets coming in low for a landing wagged its wings as it flew over our house. I choose to believe he was as bummed as we were that he couldn't entertain us by breaking the sound barrier so close to the ground. In my golden years, they announced our NGAF base were replacing their F16s with F35s I was excited, but other older people tried to fight it due to increased noise. My Mom's response, she's now 91, was "for God's sake most of them are deaf already!" Given the situation in the world now they are probably grateful that our F35s are doing sometimes daily sorties depending on the threat level.

Even a 30% drop in pilot information input would have him gain seconds needed for executing a command to the aircraft, possibly through a neural interface, taking direct but corrected action from the pilot to execute a corse of action much faster than on the pilot’s skill alone, being that the AI would augment the pilot’s thoughts and actions for a quicker response time above and beyond the pilot’s ability alone. I hope I did not sound repetitive but I am hoping to clarify my thoughts on the subject from a different perspective.

This reminds me of the HiMat aircraft tested at Edwards Air Force Base in the 80's.
F-16s have lot of life in them and even as expandable drones make ton of sense.
I think you can help with the cognitave load by going back to tandem seat aircraft.
9:05 Making self-driving cars is way harder than an automated fighter. Fighters don't have to worry about all the clutter on the streets, and another axis of movement is not a big factor for AI. Btw, I'm working on AI stuff (it's lots of funnnnnn :D). And all the other aircraft can be detected by the autopilot as easy as a human could. How the Airplane reacts to control input (handles) is easily predictable. Also, a computer does not have to worry about g forces. The only thing Humans may still be superior is in tactics. AI can way faster react and may work better in situations where a fast reaction is required. I'm not saying it is easy, just way easier than fully self-driving cars. But still great Video :D
I can only imagine the counter measures against hacking the AI is immense.
This is a natural force multiplier progression. Once the computers learn enough to be true drones, i.e. extensions of the manned aircraft's Mind then I can see flocks of Manned and Drones planes being able to execute multiple tasks with one flock. The next step will be craft that can land and VTOL like the F35 but larger.
Let's hope it works better than 'attack my target' in IL2! :)
They already have an auto pilot program that will do that. The hard part is if you got some one chasing you while you're sleeping.
Nothing like making SKYNET!
This has a lot of potential as it could take a lot of load off a human pilot basically remove the need for two seater combat aircraft. You can have a human pilot being assisted by an AI copilot then during ground attack or CAS the pilot can let the AI take over flying while the pilot focuses on identifying and engaging ground targets. So you can either remove the need for a copilot or free up the copilot to manage unmanned wingmen
