You want to try, Live from Iceland, which provides links to GPS readings, seismo’s, live EQ maps and links to volcano educational / geological stuff, so you can learn for yourself and see the evidence. Also Shawn Wilmsey channel, geology proffesssor, who ‘flew’ a drone (remotely from USA, with the assistance of ground crew in Iceland), over the original eruption and we were very fortunate to be in the right place at the right time to see the fissure erupt nearest to the town. I have been following both sites since about start of December 2023. I am very sceptical of the ‘shock horror’ sites but these 2 are genuine information channels.

It's such a fascinating thing. While the Icelandic people are extremely resilient and rational, I would personally find it hard to return to the town after this. If even the most experienced volcanologists and geologists didn't know the magma tunnel had extended that far there is very obviously an ongoing threat to the town and it's not yet possible to accurately map it. Everyone could return in a couple of months and then another unexpected fissure could open up under a dozen homes. I think there comes a time to accept defeat and move on from an inhospitable environment. I think this area of the country is going to be very active for a very long time, so I don't think it's feasible to consider returning to that town.

An argument I have heard is that the town should now be considered a testbed for volcano defense, as a practice field in case eruptions start closer to even more populated areas, like Reykjavík. Already the tactic of building berms has been tested with positive results, and the issue of cracking has been highlighted with at least one tragic result.

  • @amantedar123

Actually the volcanologists and geologists knew since November that the fissure extended 12 km, crossing the town and even going under the seafloor. The earthquakes had shown this early on. They were expecting an eruption anywhere on that line. They just presumed that the second eruption would likely occur where the first one occured in December.

The magma is not coming from somewhere else, it is just a continuation of the December eruption, it is magma that was in the dyke that had not erupted and was released as a result of adjustments due to tectonic stress being relieved. The magma rising under Svartsengi has not moved and will do its thing at some later time. THAT eruption/intrusion has not happened yet.

So much better than hectic swarming journalists doing their best to fill the time with many words, but have sparse information to offer. I try to imagine what it must be like if my house was there and I was obliged to pay the mortgage, when it's unsellable and at the same time I can't live there. But I see my house on the video, perfectly allright. It's a horrible limbo.

I said that with the previous eruption, given it had already weakened the land in town it would be likely it would come up there as path of least resistance. This year sometime it will be coming up right in the center.

Totally agree. They got off lightly, all things considered, but I would not be surprised if the next eruption moves south. The town is too risky, sitting on a graben right through the middle. No company will be willing to insure houses. Ironically, the Blue Lagoon may survive as it is to one side of the fissure. There are always people who get a thrill from the risks (until an eruption hits the tourists and then the bad PR will finish it)

@@stephenfidler1005 What about that repair man with the compactor that fell into the fissure. It's very bad health and safety design. In construction he would have to have had a harness and attached to a long support beam or crane a significant distance from the fissure. Even in mountaineering they would laugh at you if you went near a crevasse with a compactor! and no safety ropes/harness etc. You'd think in Iceland they'd be more aware of such things.

Praying for the people who lost their homes. Very sad. If this is the end of the vent just outside of the town. Maybe the rest of the town will be spared. But unfortunately it is not finished. They say the uplift is still going on. Perhaps the lava will stay underground and flow into the sea. Might lose some of the harbor, but that will be a small price compaired to the homes. I will pray thats how it will go. Still very sad.

In some ways, the economic impact of the destruction of some number of homes vs. destroying the harbor that's presumably used for commercial fishing activity... maybe the loss of a few homes is actually less severe overall? Of course, that's not how it will seem to the owners of those homes. Difficult, unpredictable situation to try to manage.

good to see that the propagation of lava flows has ceased, and that a minimal of structures were impacted directly from the lava.
