I love how Taako carries the strongest sword in the game on his back and let's Magnus fight for his life with his regular old axe while Merle continues to ignore his amazing cleric buffing spells and plays his character as a weaker version of a mage.

Probably because he changed Lich mechanics for his story purposes. Everyone knows about Liches, but "Our Liches Are Different" is definitely a trope Griffin is incorporating.

Well, he didn't change Lich mechanics, he invented some entirely new kind of creature and then for some reason confusingly called it a Lich.

Lich isn't even a legitimate mythological creature, it just means "corpse" in Old English. DnD created it's own mythology regarding Liches and the concept stuck in pop culture, but the DnD mechanics aren't the parts that stuck. The Lich King in Warcraft and The Lich in Adventure Time don't have phylacteries or paralyzing touches, but they are still widely recognized as Liches. In the same way do the Liches in Griffin's game function differently from the established DnD creatures, but still retain the iconography, immortality, and powerful arcane necromancy that the Lich is iconic for. I mean, Pegasi don't fly in flocks in mythology or DnD, but it's not a huge deal that Griffin took artistic liberty with that during the train arc. That's just how artistic liberty works, yo.
