Intelligent well thought out ship designs! It seems like it should be a super power sometimes! At least the ISDs had toilets! I think it's the effect of the intelligence draining effect the dark side has on Sith Lords. I mean, who the hell would approve a ship with just TIEs for point defense! I thought they studied a little to get that Dark Lord certification and admission to the Guild! (I think all future Dark Lords need to study Peter Anspach's list - if you haven't read it: 1) where have you been hiding & 2) search the author name, or article name 'Top 100 Things I'd Do If I Became An Evil Overlord). Most other franchises like BSG realized you needed a wall of protection BESIDES fighters. Visually, it would look great on the big screen (if done right and not just an orgy of projectiles), but it would significantly reduce the chance of damage to a capital ship... Ehhhh... oh well.... C'est la vie. (Yes, it's the Americanized version meaning 'Such is Life', instead of the original French which is more properly translated as 'This is the Life).

Yeah, I'm not convinced. If the technology could feasibly be miniaturised to that degree, Interdictors wouldn't be so large in the first place. I see the Hapan mines being something that could work when deployed together as a network, effectively co-ordinating to turn many tiny gravity wells into one large one. Deployed individually, they probably wouldn't have any significant effect.

Or evem better: arrogance. I absolutely hate arrogance as an explanation, since it's basically just another way of saying "stupidity" from a narrative standpoint. The Death Star should have had an escort fleet and CAP of TIEs, but why did it go in alone? Arrogance. Arrogance works on a personal level (i.e. Tarkin's refusal to evacuate) since its a character trait, but institutions should be somewhat more rational. I know arrogance can be baked into practices and policies, but in storytelling basic competence should be expected from villains.

Warlord Zsinj and Admiral Trigit made use of the Empion Mine in the "Wraith Squadron" novel - a combination of a sensor suite, gravity well projector, an EM charge to flash-disable electronics (such as astromech units), an ion beam to disable the vessels themselves and a hyperwave transceiver to signal that a ship was ready for capture. It was an ingenius device, really, and had it been developed during the First Galactic Civil War I think the outcome would have been quite different.

@@LionofCaliban It would be pretty straightforward. The anti-tamper device would have an IFF transponder. Recovery ship gets close and broadcasts an interrogation signal for that ships interdiction missiles. The interrogation signal, if correct, triggers the anti-tamper devices IFF transponder to hash the interrogation signal with its serial number and transmits it back. The recovery ship knows which interdiction missiles were fired and will now know which interdiction missile they are near. They can then transmit the correct disarm code to the anti-tamper device and it will disarm itself. The missile can then be brought aboard and refurbished. If the anti-tamper device receives an incorrect interrogation signal, it can be set before launch to either not respond or respond with a fake serial number hash. The former would be used if the missiles were being used somewhere with lots of debris. Having the transponder not respond would make them harder for the rebels to physically locate after a battle. The latter would be used when in relatively clear space where the most basic of scans will pick up the missile. In that case, the fake serial number hash would warn the Imperial recovery ship that the missile it is looking to recover belongs to another ship. The rebels will have no way to tell a fake hash from a real one and will continue to waste time trying to disarm the missile. If enough bad attempts are made, the missile self destructs to prevent capture.

All it takes it is one leak, you've got to reset your entire system, because once you work out the formula used to spit out the hash key, then you can start to generate them yourself. So..... yeah, not really. Doesn't quite work like that. Also, it's a way for the Rebels to get explosives. Sure, you need to survive, but if you're there, find a couple of these, you can make some pretty good bombs. Especially if they only arm under very set conditions. If they don't and are otherwise armed, meaning to approach them is that much harder. That's the point of mines, after all. Area denial.

This is off-the-shelf tech. This is a universe where they have hyperdrives, inertial dampers, artificial gravity, and repulsorlifts. Making sure stuff doesn't turn to paste when it accelerates would be pretty easy. "Not only that, you've just made sure that the chain of logistics around this device is that much more vulnerable, you need to not only protect the device, you need to protect the systems to talk to the devices. " Why? This is off-the-shelf tech. Capture all the IFF transponders you want. Without the correct programming, they're useless. "Then, those codes have to be protected, make sure that they don't get into Rebel hands." That's pretty easy to do, given that I specifically mention that each interrogation signal is ship specific and changed every time they are used. To the point that a recovery vessel from one ship could not recover the missiles from another. It would be generated onboard and changed every time the missiles were used. You'd have to infiltrate the ship, grab the codes, escape without being noticed, get back to friendlies, launch an attack, get them to launch their interdiction missiles, win the fight, THEN go recover the interdiction missiles with the stolen codes. It would be easier to just steal the plans for them and build them yourself. "All it takes it is one leak, you've got to reset your entire system, because once you work out the formula used to spit out the hash key, then you can start to generate them yourself. " No you can't. 1) You need the serial number of the individual interdiction missile to generate the hash. 2) The disarm code is independent from the hash anyway. 3) That's not how hashing works. Hashing and encryption ASSUMES that the formula will be known by an attacker. The formula for Twofish is freely available. It won't do you any good in defeating it. "So..... yeah, not really. Doesn't quite work like that. " it actually does. "Also, it's a way for the Rebels to get explosives. Sure, you need to survive, but if you're there, find a couple of these, you can make some pretty good bombs. Especially if they only arm under very set conditions. " You are confused about the purpose of an anti-tamper device in this case. These aren't bombs, where an anti-tamper device would simply detonate the explosive filler. All the anti-tamper device is intended to do here is prevent the capture of the interdiction missile. All that would be needed is a few demolition charges next to critical components. You might have a dozen hand-grenades worth of explosives, at most, in each interdiction missile. Capturing interdiction missiles for the purpose of harvesting explosives would be like invading Wisconsin so you can get free cheese. Not worth it at all. "If they don't and are otherwise armed, meaning to approach them is that much harder. That's the point of mines, after all. Area denial." An interdiction missile wouldn't have enough explosives to damage anything bigger than a TIE fighter. You only care about destroying the critical components of the interdiction field generator to prevent capture.

The problem was the Empire being so focused on constructing the Death Stars. I believe that all the resources (money, personal, research, etc) were completely allocated in the project so that there weren't much left to improve or to be more creative in other fields. Especially if we consider that while in the midst of this they were building the military as well. So, I believe that even though some of them would like to have better fighters, more suitable capital ships, and explore other options in combat technology, they wouldn't have the resources to do so.

If I recall correctly, Imperious-class Star Destroyers carried with them several so-called 'Gravity Mines'. So even if the GCW-era Galactic Empire did not know how to manufacture these, we know for sure that they were being used by the Expanded Universe Legacy-Era Krayt Empire at around 137ABY. The Imperious' predecessor, the Fel Empire's Pellaeon-class, was equipped with a Gravity Well Generator onboard, and that was their main capital ship, essentially the Legacy-Era's ISD I, so by that time, the 'Second GE' already solved the problem of interdiction technology being very expensive.

A nasty twist on the concept would be bomber deployable limpet interdiction mines. Stick one or two to a rebel ship's hull and it isn't going anywhere. Field doesn't need to be that massive, at least compared to the ones created by Interdictor cruisers, it just needs to have a bubble large enough to interfere with the ship it is attached to and some of the surrounding space. Maybe couple it with and induction tap powered automated blaster turret for some more mayhem against any enemy fighters trying to remove the limpet. :)

  • @casbot71

*Other options in addition to the mines.* Refit Interdictor ships to be specialised in AA defence since the countermeasure against them is sending your fighters in immediately for a quick disable. And friendly capital ships can screen them from the rare rebel capital ships. A pair of ISD''s in formation ahead of it can stop any capital ship getting through but they would have no hope of blocking snub fighters from getting to the Interdictor. As for the Interdictors a special version of the ISD with interdictor technology *_hidden inside,_* not as powerful as a standard Interdictor Star Destroyer but still effective enough, that has no external difference to a standard ISD. In a major fleet battle it can't be specifically targeted by rebel ships looking to escape. The extra space can come from completely removing it's capacity to carry ground forces, troops, a portable base, Walkers ect, just leave it a fighter compliment, so that it's still identical in space combat. It's used as a support ship in tandem with a fleet, not as a standard Imperial patrol and system dominance vessel. And it can be moved around to lock down unruly systems or patrol prime targets when not on fleet duty, to confuse rebel forces. They do a hit and run and have the bad luck to encounter it, meaning there is the potential for any hit and run raid to become a *hit and hang around.* Another countermeasure is to load up ISD's tubes with anti fighter ordinance as standard, ready to fire at a moment's notice. Rebels jump in and snub fighter pilots are still getting their bearings while a barrage of guided missiles streak in at them. And just put Thrawn in charge…

The novel "Star Wars: Wraith Squadron" actually does feature a single-use interdiction mine that was small enough that a Corellian Corvette could deploy numerous mines, so I don't think it's a miniaturization issue. Instead, I think it's a power issue. I've always read into it that Gravity Well Generators consume so much energy that it requires the use of large generators, and thus large ships, to create and maintain a sizeable enough field. The Hapan mines you refer to were, based on schematics I've seen, were on the scale of a dropship or light freighter, and thus too large to be effectively used in a missile.

interdiction droids may be a viable alternative. Potentially more expensive but with a droid brain they could target, and avoid fire. It would not surprise me if somewhere the Empire was able to acquire CIS fighters and frigates derelict since the clone wars, meaning plenty of droid ships to practice on until refining it into a cheaper, effective force replacing a TIE squadron with one of these wouldn't be too different to sliding in a bomber squadron to a fighter strike force either

Good job Ecks! Also, another cost-effective addition for the Empire to negate Rebel hit-and-runs is to increase the use of Victory-Class Star Destroyers, Vindicator Cruisers, and other capital ships of similar tonnage and arm them with interdictor mines and missiles. All this combined with swarms of shielded TIEs, Skipray blastboats, and TIE Defenders or TIE Advanced can eliminate both the Rebel ships trying to flee and their starfighters. It never hurts to even arm valuable Imperial orbital bases and shipyards with interdictor missiles and an inventory of interdictor mines to minimize Rebel escapes while the reinforcements could be decanted out of hyperspace at specific areas to demolish Rebel lines and crush them.

I also have another question, why Yavin in particular, yes the destruction of DS1 was a crucial moment for the rebellion, the empire and the galaxy as a whole but I can name a few other battles that are arguably as crucial or important if not more important, a few examples would be: The battle of corrusant if it was not rigged for a guaranteed republic victory. The first and second battle of geonosis, the first one being more related to morale and such and second one being related to the super gold tank thingies. The destruction of the malevolence. The battle of Endor and much more.

An interesting video. It makes sense to use interdiction missiles. Get a missile, swap the warhead for a gravity field generator, then launch like normal. The only problem I see with this is that you need a decent size of missile. You need to have enough room for the field generator, the guidance computer, weapon computer, transceiver for communication with the ship, fuel, engines, reaction control systems and anything else that may be needed. At the end of it, you may need to refit the weapon systems with a large enough missile tube or launcher.

A much simpler, cheaper and faster alternative would be to include an auxiliary point defense battery... A more involved alternative would be to swap the bridge and the fighter hanger so fighters could launch straight at the enemy or to cover the flanks and rear while protecting the primary bridge inside the heavily armored hull and at the same time eliminating the gaping week spot in the underside of the ISD and bridge on top.

I'm thinking that any system with major traffic or large orbital facilities could benefit from say interdictor mines. I used to play Star Fire. In that space stations with communication suites could effectively control fields of Independently Deployed Energy Weapons, Mine Fields, or Missile Pods. And they could activate or deactivate several at a time using these facilities. With interdictor mines an Approach Control could effectively shut down specific areas to prevent suspicious vessels from leaving before a security unit could intercept. This also would not be that expensive to retrofit as most space stations would have numerous add ons over the years that could be repurposed or worked into the upkeep budget.
