I've recently written about some top hardcore bands like Bad Brains and Minor Threat . Now it's time to represent. Here is one of the shining lights in New York City hardcore. From the Bronx, this fine group dropped only one e.p. in 1983 and you're hearing it now. But with this vinyl slab they forever cemented their place in my heart. A big fat sound with steamrolling power, intelligent lyrics and heart felt singing. Man, did we punks dig this record. What a massive, powerful sound they got! Only 500 copies of the original pressing were issued and it's quite rare. Expect to spend over $500 when a clean copy comes up at auction. .But there's good news. The e.p. along with twelve demo tracks and one live track recorded at CBGB in 1983 have recently reissued on an album called Loud and Clear on the Radio Raheem label out of Brooklyn. If you usually think "Oh God, do I have to sit through shitty sounding demos again? " think again. These are well recorded and have the same tremendous steamrolling sound, but just a little more ragged. If you're like me, these could just be your cup of tea. The Radio Raheem album can hardly be improved upon and as of now sets the standard for all future NYC hardcore reissues. It has all the songs' lyrics, a sheet of stickers and a beautiful 12" X 12" booklet with twenty two pages of band history, flyers, art, reviews and photos. If you're into punk and hardcore I would grab this ASAP before it goes out of print. BTW, saw them at the first A-7 (the premier club for NYHC) reunion show a few years back and it seemed like they just stepped out of 1983. They sounded as great as ever. Must be something in the Bronx water. Back then they were joined by Bad Brains, Heart Attack, Kraut, Urban Waste, the Mob, Reagan Youth, Cause For Alarm, Nihilistics, Agnostic Front, No Thanks and others to make New York City a hotbed of great great music.

Respectfully, I don't think that anybody in The Abused was from The Bronx. Kevin was from LES, Raf was from Queens, Bryan was from, Brooklyn (?), and I forget where Dave was from but I'm pretty sure that it wasn't The Bronx.

@@Armdis thank you Armand. For some reason I always thought they formed in the Bronx. Maybe someone back in the day told me that. I see the only reference to the Bronx is the Fordham Baldies a baldhead gang in the 50's that Kevin seems to have patterned himself after a bit...lol. I see the new rules here do not let me correct my post, but I'll be more careful in the future when write about this terrific band.

@@kevinr278 Kevin, I do not believe any members of this great band wound up in any other bands. I guess it was not uncommon to put out one record during this era, many bands did it. The Abused put out clearly one of the best Hardcore EP's during that great time. They did, however, release a demo cassette in 1982 of which several songs were redone for Loud And Clear.

My review on Allmusic written April 21, 2018. 5 Stars The Abused's Loud And Clear was released on Abused Music in 1983 as a 7" EP. The EP is a fiery set of outstanding New York City Hardcore. The original 7" is very rare. The EP was reissued in 2013 on Radio Aheem Records as a 12" compilation including a bunch of other delectables.
