THE ABSOLUTE BEST BMW E36/E46 DRIFT BRAKES ON A BUDGET PLUS BULLETPROOFING THE REAR END HACK

With my car almost ready for competition its time to upgrade the braking system and the rear end to handle 800 horsepower. with a lot of speed you need a lot of braking force. This is where the guys over at Seems Legit Garage come in with their innovative wilwood caliper adapter to run 4 piston calipers for your handbrake. This allows you to lock the rear tires and initiate a drift or make corrections with the least amount of effort as possible. I think its almost cheating on how good it brakes.
The rear end also needed attention so I upgraded my rear trailing arms to bmw E46 330i which share the same hub size as the M3, allowing us to run M3 size axles without breaking the bank. on top of that the 330 uses a larger rotor diameter in this case allowing us to make a budget big brake kit for the footbrake as well.
I'm using the E46 330i kit with this setup

Nerptech sent me a new set of their adjustable rear upper and lower control arms along with spherical bushings and reinforcement tabs.

Upgraded my differential output flanges to E36 M3 ones to allow me to run M3 axles that will handle the crazy horsepower the car is making. You have the option on buying a set of used M3 oem axles or like I did and bought a set of aftermarket replacements for around 150 USD

Hey mate. I’m also in the process of putting the 330i trailing arms in my e36. Im curious to know who you got the axles and the m3 diff flanges from I’m in Australia. Kinda struggling to find a place to get them🙂

I’m late to the party as usual, but still stopping by to see what you got going on and show some support. One thing that would help me from a how-to perspective is just to quickly go over the variables of different cars and applications. There’s a lot of E36/E46 owners out there and these videos can be a great tool if we understand what the variables are. In my case I have a E36 M3, so maybe I just need the brake kit, or maybe I should upgrade the bushings too? It wasn’t clear what I need because some of the upgrade you’re doing is because it’s lowered, and the fact it’s not an M3. I understand you can’t spend a ton of time covering all the variables, but a quick segment on what options are for other setups might help others. Just something to think about. Anyway, hope you’re loving the new shop and working your way to your dreams. Best!

Bushings are the same on all variables. Always a good idea to upgrade the trailing arm bushings. You have various materials to choose from. I like solid heim joint style bushings for best performance , but come at a price with noise if you are looking for comfort.

@@ALBERTOBIGBOOST Thanks for the response! I'll look into them as I start figuring out upgrades. I've only had the car a couple weeks and it's totally stock. Being my first BMW I have a lot to learn, but it was a bargain that I couldn't pass up. Who can say no to a new project car?

what made you choose seems legit's kit over chase bays? i seen that chase bays uses wilwood calipers (120-9693) . they pretty much identical but the piston area (4.8 in²) is 1.80 in² bigger that the wilwood's (120-9703) (3.00 in²) that seems legit garage uses.

I have not tried the chase bays one. But on mine using a wilwood 3/4” master , the amount of travel on the handle and the amount of force needed to lock the rear tires is about perfect. I’m not sure how much more the handle travel would be with the 120-9693. Would have to try a car equipped with that kit for comparison

How do the axle spacers help to prevent axles breaking on lowered cars? I kept breaking mine until I raised the back up again. Thanks in advance.

  • @pdxmix

He’s saying when you lower the car it extends the axles and then they break due to overextension. The spacer makes them the correct length so they don’t overextend.
