The Abortion Divide (full documentary) | FRONTLINE

FRONTLINE goes inside the fight over abortion. Drawing on a landmark FRONTLINE film from the 1980s, the documentary takes a look at both sides of the abortion divide in a community still embroiled in the conflict. (Aired 2019)
This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: www.pbs.org/donate.
In 1983 - 10 years after Roe v. Wade - a landmark FRONTLINE documentary, “Abortion Clinic”, showed the experience of and conflict over abortion like never before on American television.
Nearly 40 years later, FRONTLINE returned to Pennsylvania to look at both sides of the abortion debate in “The Abortion Divide.”
From producers Mark Obenhaus and Elizabeth Leiter, “The Abortion Divide” offers a window into the sometimes difficult and deeply personal choices women face with unplanned pregnancy - and examines the steadfast belief of the anti-abortion community that there should be no choice at all.

Definition of protracted social conflict Protracted social conflicts is a theory developed by Edward Azar. The term refers to conflict situations characterized by the prolonged and often violent struggle by communal groups for such basic needs as security, recognition, acceptance, fair access to political institutions, and economic participation.[3] The communal groups may experience deep-seated cleavages based upon racial, religious, cultural or ethnic lines. These cleavages are characterized by continuing hostility with sporadic outbreaks of violence; and caused by the frustration of human needs for security, recognition, and distributive justice. Such identity-driven rifts are the result of an underlying fear of extinction that often grows within vulnerable ethnic groups who live with the memories or fear of persecution and massacre.[4] Ethnic divisions and perceived threats often result in the domination of the state machinery by a single group or coalition of elites who deny access to basic human needs for the majority of the population.[5]

I am from a small Caribbean country known as Jamaica where abortions are illegal but still done under the table. There is also a growing number of child neglect, child abuse, and child molestation but the tourism minister would never tell foreigners that we have that problem here in Jamaica currently. Let's talk about the daily rate at which rape has advanced since March2020 curfew lockdowns every week since and child molestation. Just last week an 11year old got pregnant by a grown-ass man and the sad thing about it is that she has no choice in if she wants to keep her baby or not becz pro life is only pro life from conception to birth. After the baby is born you are left on your own. Her little body isn't fully developed to carry or give birth to a child. Her pregnancy can go very badly. I hate seeing men who have never experienced periods or cramps and will never understand what it means to give birth makes life-altering decisions like this. The law needs to be rewritten by women for women. Religion is being used as a free pass to do anything and justify it in the name of Christ.

Poor little girl! It's traumatic enough for a young girl to be raped by an adult man - someone she should be able to trust to protect her - but to be impregnated by him! Abortion should be automatic in such cases. How can this little girl, the rape victim of a pedophile, be expected to go through pregnancy and birth, then the heart-wrenching decision to keep that baby or give it up for adoption? She's neither physically nor emotionally grown up for that and her life will be forever impacted. A medically prescribed abortion would at least give her the chance to recover from the trauma and continue her adolescence and education.

Christianity is one of the greatest evils to plague humanity. The Christians goal is to build a global Christian theocracy where women and girls have zero basic human rights. This is truly a war that we women must continue to fight. I wish all these ladies the best and im heartbroken to hear what is happening in your home country of Jamaica. Women all around the world are being abused and cannot get justice. Its rediculous how the penalties for having an abortion are way more harsh than the penalties men are goven for abusing and r@ping women and girls. The world favors men and sees our lives as somehow less valuable.

It's nice that there are homes for pregnant and new mothers, but parenting doesn't last for just 6 months. How are these women, who are basically homeless, going to support those babies for the next 20 years? If they are encouraged to have unplanned babies, the commitment to helping them would need to be a hell of a lot longer. How convenient that there was "no data" on how the women and their babies fared after leaving the mothers' houses. I fear they have a future of poverty and struggle, made worse by having children they weren't ready to support.

Making it illegal doesn't make it happen less. Making all companies pay a living wage. Making all schools teach teens about their bodies and about reproduction and fertility. And when the tax payer says no you blame the pain and suffering on them. I get your argument of, help the financial suffering and then more mothers wont abort their babies, which is probably true. It's not the first I've heard this, they've been saying that for decades This isn't about protecting life, it's about them wanting a certain vision for America. They want women, to have babies. How and when that happens is secondary. Optimally they want nuclear households with a working dad, housewife, and multiple children. If that can't happen, they want women to give birth. Period, full stop We could drastically reduce abortions in America next year if we passed laws on what you said. Federally mandated sex education in public schools, and freely available forms of contraception to girls especially, and also boys. And make birth control free in medical insurance. Completely denying people of that is sabotaging them and doesn’t prevent them from acting in promiscuity. I don’t plan on having a child until I feel financially and mentally ready to do so, which is why I got contraception when I turned 18: my parents were so against it. I don’t regret that decision. Contraceptives unfortunately are not always preventative and some people have severe allergies or cannot afford them. But you’re absolutely right in that we should continue to educate and have the right to choose. But tbh, at this point the only real safe way of not being pregnant is to have a permanent medical operation. But some of those procedures are not always successfully reversible and some are absolutely irreversible. Of course there are complications and side effects and there is the even rarer chance some crazy person kidnaps you or forces you to have the reversible procedure done against your will. Who knows though at this point? The government could force reversible procedures and punish a woman for having a hysterectomy. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Should your thoughts on a military draft be dismissed because only men can be drafted? Should the opinion of a woman urologist be discounted? Roe v. Wade was decided by 9 men. I doubt that you think their opinion should be dismissed. Maybe lots of religious people behave badly. That says nothing about the truth of their views on abortion. What becomes of those little six month old babies kicked out in the cold? How much might they suffer? Will those children leaving the Mother's House be exposed to the elements? Drug use? Domestic disputes? Will they go live with distant relatives? Crash on couches with their mom's? Be abused emotionally, physically, and/or sexually in whatever make-do place they end up living? Lest we forget, rapists, murderers, sociopaths, pedophiles.....ALL criminals have parents! Please note that you did not acknowledge to my point on the church paying for the life/education of the child if they are so PRO-life. A man's opinion can be taken into consideration if YOU AS A COLLECTIVE begin to implement a culture of supporting the child you participated in creating (i.e. be RESPONSIBLE for the sperm you cast out in the world). If you think abortion is OK, why is it different? You've been avoiding this central issue. Why do you think that the alleged unwillingness of churches to support a child that might have been aborted have any bearing on the actual truth of whether the unborn are human beings deserving of the right to life? That's makes no sense. If an abolitionist was unwilling to support freed slaves, does that falsify her belief that slavery is wrong and should be legally abolished? Churches also oppose infanticide. Are they wrong on this because they may be unwilling to give assistance to mothers who considered killing their born children but decided against it? You continue to avoid the real issue: why is abortion, the intentional killing of innocent unborn children, OK? Maybe you're right about men's irresponsibility. How does that have anything to do with whether what an irresponsible man may believe is true or not? Let's say an irresponsible man tells you that the unborn are human beings deserving of the right to life. Show him that he's wrong. The woman carrying the child in her womb for 9 months must always have the sole right of veto. It's her body, it's her child, her decision. Don't want unnecessary killing of babies? My father's older sister hemorrhaged to death giving birth to a stillborn boy, who would have been her 7th child. My mother's sister died during childbirth in 1961. That baby survived, her third in less than 24 months; she had a stroke, was in her mid-20s. My parents & grandparents wished their sisters/daughters would have had the choice to have an abortion. They would have lived normal lives and not left behind nine motherless children. And if you think that didn't fuck with my cousins their entire lives, you're wrong. If it saves my life, I have the right to take a part of your body and use it for myself. But you see how illogical that is. If a woman doesn't consent to the continuation of the pregnancy, she has the right to terminate it. One of the most divisive topics that I learned of in my time with Amnesty International, abortion is a topic most touched by religion and old world practices. We used to live in a time when humanity's population could be decimated by a little war (Sea People's attack), a little famine (any point in history), a little disease (Black Death and the likes), and a little too much death. Humans with a bit more insight than others made themselves the elders and wisemen of our pasts who constructed moral pathways for us to interbreed properly (no incest) and to keep the population going. Although people with power have perverted these methods to generate soldiers and workers for their empire in their corner of the world, the rhetoric remains similar in most religions: 1) the most important role for a person is to create progenies 2) you must not commit suicide 3) you must not commit incest or socially ruinous relationships. This was when our population barely his 1 million. Now that we are at 8 billion, we see all sorts of things. We have so many children born from unwanted pregnancies that need a home. We have so many people with birth defects. We have so many people jobless or littering the streets. We are past the point of having more lives. Let's make better lives.

That "Little Girl" Totally Changed my Life! The Love a Dad has for a Daughter can not be described.... I do not Judge anyone,, Its not my place to do so. All I can tell anyone is to really think before making such a decision.. I was 26 at the time with a good job,, Which had "Nothing" to do with my wanting my Daughter. Money is not everything, Family is... Children are our future and "Time, Love and nurture is all it takes to raise an "Incredible Daughter" That's all... ~NEVER GIVE UP!~

  • @Miguel09z

    @Miguel09z

    2 жыл бұрын

No offense, but that argument would work if every woman wants their babies. That argument assumes that by having these programs in place, every woman will therefore carry to term and give the life in them a chance to at least live. This argument also is placing the burden to provide these programs on just "pro lifers" but at the same time actually preventing such programs to be pushed because they are pushing for abortion all while saying they can't have these babies because of financial issues. So they are undermining their argument inadvertently. Its like them driving a car really fast and saying we need to slow down all while keeping their foot on the gas rather than starting the process of slowing down. Sadly however, it doesn't fix the issue with those woman who just don't want to have babies but engage with the risky business of heterosexual intercourse with or without birth control. And so because of the gamble, there are woman who will just end life because they drew what they considered the "short end of the stick." The fact we now live in an age where abortion is seen as the only logical choice to make, and for some, because of marketing, its the only option they really know. There's money to be had in abortion for companies and clinics. We have made a business out of ending life. So we end lives in the name of saving and or unburdening lives? Its a big oxymoron. If the arguments are financially backed, then instead of keeping this train moving of ending life, let's take a different path. How about we actually address the root of the argument? Why do we not support women who, whether by responsible or irresponsible intercourse, end up pregnant and want to end life because they believe they will not be able to financially support the life? We spend billions on our wars, and even the wars of other countries, yet we leave woman who might financially struggle with a baby by the side of the road? Its rather interesting and sad...

This whole process is just sad all the way around. I feel much sadness for the women that have to make this decision. People like myself, and struggle to conceive children, I feel sadness for us also because we have not been blessed with the gift of a life to take care of. I wish they were more resources for women that are in poverty situation that wish to keep their children. It does seem like the folks encouraging women to not abort their baby are not there to help them when they really are needed. I think whether we make abortion safer and legal, or if we do the opposite and encourage women to keep their children, more help needs to be given on both ends. Personally, it’s not a decision I would make, but I am in a category of women who is not fortunate enough to conceive a child. Therefore I recognize my own bias. I will also say that being a person with a disability, it is very easy to have a boarded me but my parents did the exact opposite they fought to keep me and my sister alive. They literally went into bankruptcy. That in my opinion should not have had to happen. Our medical system as a whole fails people on either ends but let’s be honest so does our social system. Frankly America we could do better and we should do better.

Thank you for your comment. It is thoughtful and articulate. I would only add something from my own experience of what I have seen. Politically I agree that people yelling the most often aren’t there to help, however, what I have seen myself in my own little corner of the universe is that a lot of pro-lifers are deeply involved in food pantries, fights for early childhood education, serve as foster parents and frequently as adoptive parents. So from what I see there is a disconnect, mainly political, about supporting the life once it arrives. But there are plenty of people out there (again, just what I see) who do try to support. The politicians, not at all, usually.

What I have noticed in the past and I notice in the video is that what was removed by a suction abortion I believe at 10 weeks looked nothing like the fetus photos the anti abortion folks show at the same age looking more developed. I think there should be a time limit for performing abortions but I also understand the situations these people can be in and resent the pressure people place on them on their way into or out of a clinic. Recently I found out that a cousin a couple of times removed back in the 30's had a abortion and died as a result. From the look of her she is clearly related and I know the pure sweetness she had within her heart and mind. I believe overturning Roe will bring us back to that time of many deaths of young women. I also have a sister that reluctantly gave up a baby for adoption.. She had feelings of loss I think she would have not experienced if she had not carried that baby to term and seen him after he was born and was not able to see him again at any time afterward. Therefore talking up the unltrasound when little is visible probably sounds wonderful but is not for the pregnant woman. My sister had psychiatric difficulties ever after until she died about 40 years later.

I can't watch this documentary. Just the thought of aborting a baby, a fetus, disgusts me. Since when does aborting a baby become justified? If a woman is raped and gets pregnant the community should come out to support her. They should not support the idea of aborting the baby. As a Christian community, we should also fight against and flee from sexual immorality; the rampant promiscuity among the youths today. Just two minutes into the documentary and I hear the first young woman saying she's aborting the baby because she is financially unstable. Is that a reason enough to take a baby's life? Where's our morality as a community? Have we forgotten God our creator? Why do we ruin the beautiful marriage institution God made? why do we fight for and not against sexual promiscuity among the youths? Don't we know, as Christians, the sexually immoral will not see God? Have we forgotten abortion is murder?

Not being able to afford a child = child may not live a good life. I’ve personally met many children who, sadly, wish they had never been born to begin with. Birth itself is not an easy task, either. If she dies giving birth, or has complications giving birth, does no one care? It seems not. I’ve seen it happen with my own two eyes. It’s so sad. A side note: the statistics show that the youths of today are having less sex & have less sexual partners than previous generations. Also, there are married couples who do not wish to have any or more children.
