Sex Trafficking in America (full documentary) | FRONTLINE

This 2019 documentary tells the stories of young women coerced into prostitution - and follows one police unit that’s committed to rooting out sexual exploitation.
This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: www.pbs.org/donate.
Award-winning director Jezza Neumann and producer Lauren Mucciolo (“Poor Kids”) embed with the Phoenix police unit that’s tackling child sexual exploitation, offering an inside look at the lucrative industry through unique access to a series of undercover, high-stakes police operations. They also film with young women who have escaped the trade. Using fake online ads as decoys, the Phoenix police unit targets both the traffickers luring young women into prostitution, and the “buyers” - many of whom claim to not know that the girls they interact with are victims of trafficking. With extensive and intimate access to local law enforcement, prosecutors, service providers and the women themselves, the film shines a light on the hidden reality of sex trafficking in America.

As it should be. I'm incredibly sorry for what happened to you and wish you nothing but healing ❤️❤️❤️ I've lived in poverty and will never forget being only 14 when a guy living in the motel i was at tried to tr@ffc and do things to me. Luckily I had my mother and some other people there to help but he tried so had to convince me to come in his room with my sister amd "watch tv" I was literally just watching tv next door 😒 as if that wasn't bad enough I was holding a brand new baby girl who had only been born for 30 minutes if even. He kept telling me to come in and that I could even bring the baby. He also talked about certain parts of himself and kept try to recruit me to work for him. This was right in front of multiple adults including my mother. The cops were told but refused to help because he didn't exp/ose anything to me. As if recruiting a 14yr old girl, putting a young girl in danger, and involving a newborn wasn't bad enough. One good thing came out of it ig because we were accepted into a dv shelter because of me and what happened. I'm in a much better place now, 19 and been living with my family in a pretty good apartment for about 3yrs now❤️

Trafficking here is NOTHING like in other countries. They kidnap kids and force them. In the US we(it happened to me) are groomed into doing this willingly. Or at the time it feels that way and get us on drugs so we don't want to leave because we need the drugs. We aren't chained up and can actually leave but it's hard because we are afraid to leave because we are now "junkie prostitutes" and feel we cannot go back to our old lives. I was in this in 200-2001 and the police and society treated me like a "junkie prostitute " and arrested me often. Even though I had to go back to those men. When the police see a man with a Jerry curl and a big ass cadillac bailing me out that should of told them everything but NO!! I'm glad things have changed but it's not as insidious as the media makes it out to be.

I think PBS did a disservice in this documentary by blurring the lines between 2 consenting adults exchanging money for a service, and a person being forced to have sex to make money for a trafficker. If 2 consenting adults exchanging money for services is on the same level as trafficking, then the entire adult film industry needs to be shut down. It was good that PBS highlighted the girl who was abducted, and showed how messed up the justice system is, but they lost credibility when compared 2 consenting adults to trafficking.

Maybe it’s happened to me before I became a dad…….. that’s crazy how these women ruin mens lives and have them sent to prison for decades for human trafficking but it’s all a lie! There are so many massage parlors here in Houston with young Asian girls that got trafficked here and promised a better life and can’t leave and are made to sleep with multiple men every day… that’s human trafficking!!! It’s so so easy for vulnerable girls to fall into this trap and it’s sad. I was almost a victim to this too when I was 14, my parents divorced, I lived with an unloving mom in a bedroom that I shared with her and my sister, and was in a new city. My friend who was a victim too showed me this side of life, I ended up “engaging” in actions with a 20 year old. I’m 24 now and still blame myself, it’s so hard to see myself as a victim, I imagine there’s plenty of girls who are victim to much worse things than I was that feel this way and either ending up back in that kind of place after being rescued or harming themselves because they also blame themselves. It’s not their fault and it never is, even the choices they make to run away will never justify what these god awful corrupt men do to them.

These b1tches know what they are doing and they are just as much involved as the men… they sale pu22y. It’s a victimless crime… they are not being forced to do it but they get caught and don’t want to go to jail, so they play victim! How do I know this?! Not some bimbo that spreads her legs for money and gets caught and sends someone else to prison for her actions!

(Big read ahead ) At a time I used to not feel bad for these girls on the streets because I was dumb and not well informed, but one night a girl started running towards my car and I was thinking that she was just looking for a customer and I was about to speed up when I noticed she was scratched up and bleeding from her face. She begged me if she could get in because someone was chasing her and maybe it wasn’t the smartest idea but I unlocked my back doors. She starts crying and telling me that she got in a car with a guy and he pulled a gun on her and that another guy tried to hold her down and tie her up with zip ties and that she had to jump out of the car as they were speeding which explained her scratches. She told me where to go and I dropped her off at where she had parked her car. She asked me if I could drive behind her until she got back to her house and I did. When she got to her house she gave me a hug and broke down crying and I stayed trying make her feel better and telling her that she should call the cops which she did. They never found the guys unfortunately but after that she never went out on to the streets. Me and her started talking and became good friends after that. She now has a good job and lives in a better part of town and overall has a much better life than the one she was living before. That situation really opened my eyes to what’s happening with some of these girls. Now on my days off work when I see I girl on the streets I offer them a small bag with water, chips and a sandwich which I make before going out so that they know that someone out there cares about them for being humans and not just about what they provide. Sometimes they cuss me out and tell me to leave if I’m not buying but others accept the food and are surprised when someone shows some empathy. Well with all that said, people who hold these girls captive should never be able to see the light again cuz once they get out, they’ll go back to doing it again.

I truly wept along with that girl when she had to go back to the motel room. The world isn't fair and my heart goes out to all suffering people. There's nothing a child could do to deserve this and there's no punishment cruel enough for the traffickers. If I had it my way they'd all get snuffed out.

I applaud the young woman for being so willing to share her story and the efforts of those working to stop trafficking. It's a horrible reality that we live in that devalues human lives and autonomy. Documentaries like this show how empathetic, hard working, and dedicated minds are needed in the work to save humanity from its worst elements. I pray that Kat finds hope, peace, and comfort in knowing that her abusers and traffickers are put away (though I wish it was longer) and that she would have the support she needs to go on in her life. Her story was simply heartbreaking, but her boldness in sharing has the ability to keep others from going through the same.

I’m thoroughly convinced that porn has had a detrimental effect on men. Many have been totally desensitized by watching endless pornography. Society isn’t addressing the root cause of this predatory behavior and until it does I don’t see any changes. Trafficking women and children is a kin to murdering the souls of the victims and should be treated as such.

Porn is not to blame nor is it the root. If the entire porn industry shut down and porn stopped being mass produced we'd still have a trafficking problem. The reality is there are just bad people in this world. People who have no morals, conscience, compassion or empathy for other human beings and when combined with being money hungry with a mentally to get it by any men's necessary up to including catering to degenerates ( like p words) this is what happens. Give a bad guy something good and guaranteed he'll find a way to exploit it for his benefit.

The problem is, they're blurring the lines of 2 consenting adults agreeing to exchanging money for services, and sex trafficking. A better solution would be to legalize and regulate prostitution, and go after itraffickers who are forcing women against their will. There are hundreds of thousands of sex workers that work in legal regulated settings, if they just criminalized them, you'd have a lot more of these underground, forced trafficking. Legalization and regulation would end a lot of the human trafficking market.

A cop made him pull a hose around an wash it off, then he took him to jail. Interfering with government property was what they decided to charge him with. While in court waiting on his case to come up, an older man pushed in a wheelchair, but he could stand and walk cause I watched him het out of a car and smoke a cigarette, while the driver got an old wheelchair out of the back. Well this mans case came up before my grandsons. As I listened he was pleading to the judge to let him go home to his wife for she was his caretaker. That his step daughter would be at school and he would leave before she got home in the evening. The judge was asking him some questions, an I learned he wasn't to have any contact or be around any minor children, for he had sodomized his twelve year old step daughter. I was sitting there staring at him wondering why he wasn't in prison. An he had the gall to ask to go home during the day. And what kind of woman would cook, an take care of him after what he did to her daughter? I wanted to run over there and beat his asp. See if he would jump up or sit there like poor old me. Judge wouldn't go against the orders thank goodness. Guess he was on probation or something. But my grandson got three years probation, first offender, but since it was a felony, he got felony probation. Who says lady justice is blind?y first time ever being in a court room. @@patriciashelton6644 Yup, I know your story is true because I have seen different variations of it over time now with people that I personally know. People in this country are in total denial of how bad this has become, how deep this issue runs here or how NORMALIZED it has become. They don't understand this is BIG business here, whether it's happening on a "higher up" (economically, politicians, "celebrities", "famous" cases) or more obscure "lower" level (economically, intergenerational incest/rape/abuse). It continues to go on because it is protected by every level of authority (including parents who enable the abuse themselves, by deciding to ignore it, like the wife you mentioned) up into the judicial system, otherwise, how would sexually assaulting a minor (essentially "murdering" a child in a sense is what that should be considered) become a commonly known, unprioritized crime that people get away with EVERY single day IN THE US without ANY consequence whatsoever. What message does that send to other offenders? To me it says "free for all" Obviously, some people, like the authorities in this documentary are working for good, and it is good that the concept of "sex work" is changing, but I fear that is a very small minority among the day to day. While people think it's a conspiracy theory, I have no doubt in my mind that most of these so called "authority figures" are most likely the very people perpetuating these crimes. That does not mean every single authority figure is doing this, it means it is an intrinsic risk in ANY position of power. Whether through their own personal actions or through their negligence to take appropriate measures to carry out lawful punishment against offenders. Which, again, goes for any level of authority from parents who refuse to acknowledge in order to protect their own child, all the way up to who's writing the laws pertaining to the consequences of these actions. It is something that is simply ignored, which leaves the most vulnerable, children (and often children who have special needs in some way) to suffer unimaginably in silence. As a society we are literally ignoring the most vulnerable among us, codemning them to a lifetime of suffering. We might as well be putting these victims on death row!! It simply does not make sense that this would be so incredibly "common" otherwise. Why is some person dying of the death penalty over having weed, and another one literally rapes an infant or child and there are ZERO consequences for them? People do not want to admit, THAT is the world we live in right now. But whether they want to believe it or not it IS true.

The drug war makes lots of money for too many people so nobody wants to stop it except the victims who have no power or money. Attorneys, police, private prison companies, drug treatment centers etc are all making a killing off of the drug war.

Man this is so disgusting. Could you imagine getting caught with a truck load of drugs, and all you had to do is say someone made you do it and say you are a victim!? These b1tches know what they are doing and they are just as much involved as the men… they sale pu22y. It’s a victimless crime… they are not being forced to do it but they get caught and don’t want to go to jail, so they play victim! How do I know this?! Not some bimbo that spreads her legs for money and gets caught and sends someone else to prison for her actions!

Many people don’t realize how often traffickers aren’t the “boogeymen”- the strangers who snatch children in the cover of the night- but are more likely to be someone they are related to, well known by and/or a trusted adult… the strength it takes to tell others your story is something you should feel proud of 🖤

I've been so tired of being told by my own sisters that "prostitution is a victimless crime" knowing full well that their own brother molested me from the age of 4 until I was old enough to threaten to call the police on him. By the time I was 12, I was too ashamed to admit to my parents how long it had been going on. My sisters tried to peg me as untrustworthy and I spent too many years trying to protect my good parent's reputation, who just wanted to raise a wholesome family. My parents finally passed away at the age of 98 & 95 in 2021 and I live with the satisfaction that I finally let them know it was not their fault their three oldest children turned out to be terrible human beings. Some people are just born evil and fall into bad crowds of their own free will and others work hard to make a decent life for themselves, regardless of the crappy hand they're dealt. We all have a choice to live good lives or not, and should be judged by our actions, not the acts that others place on us, or the history that follows us. My only regret is that I never turned my brother in for fear of breaking my mother's heart, and pray for other victims from my lack of courage.
