This dead mall is now fully abandoned, and showcases the vintage aesthetic language that used to be present in the Forest Fair Mall in Cincinnati, OH. We were actually going to have a DMOD Summit at Richland, but the mall closed before we could get there. Thank you all so much for 50,000 Subscribers, and for putting up with 100 episodes of my content over the last 4 years! You all rock!

Thanks for doing Richland! Malls here in SC seemed to never really be a “way of life” in the 80s and 90s like they were back up north in more cold weather / heavy industry areas. I know you mostly do malls, but any chance you could release your talents on a video for South of the Border?

1:13:00 I hear the same sounds in the parking structure at Century III mall. In the case of that mall though, I'm gonna guess that it's the shifting of the land under the structure.

I actually just visited this mall today. I promised myself I would go see the mall in all its disrepair when I found out that it’s set to be demolished later this year. Only the Barnes&Noble and Belk are still open to my knowledge but the Belk seems to be in clearance mode. I actually stumbled across this channel seeing if anyone else had any footage inside the mall because I only was able to explore the exterior. It’s astonishing how much effort and care you’ve taken in telling this malls story and it feels kind of surreal having been about a mall I’m local to.

It's not all management that killed malls. I believe lifestyle/culture change has killed the malls. Malls used to be a social hangout. Remember being a teenager and going to the mall to hang out with friends or to look at girls? Maybe to get a bite to eat? Just to walk around? Times have changed. With the rising up of social media it has taken away (now remember we are talking about the youth of today) the need to go to the mall to hang out. Shopping trends have changed as well. The world has become very fast paced, where people are in and out to get their purchases. They don't have time to walk around at the mall most of the time. I kinda compare it with the trend of the drive in theater. They were popular from the 1950's to the 1980's. Cable TV came around and the numbers of people attending drive ins began to dwindle. In the 1950's there was nearly 4000 drive in theaters in operation in the US. Today there are about 320 operating. I couldn't find the number of malls operating at their height but there are way less now than there were in the 1980's. Not exactly the same comparison but it does show that lifestyle changes affect things in the business market. I would say that management comes in next when it comes to the demise of malls. Mall management failed to see the impending doom a lot of malls would face. They were unable to devise a solid plan to keep people coming to their malls. They failed to find different tenants that would compliment the tenants that were still around. Some mall management left spots unused because they could take a big tax write off. Location is also a factor. Malls in most smaller cities or suburbs started to fail when bigger malls in larger, more densely populated areas started to spring up. You can see this today. Most, and I said most thriving malls are in densely populated areas. For an example The Mall of Georgia in Buford Georgia is always busy when we go there. Doesn't matter what time we go, it's usually got a good amount of traffic. Lenox Square Mall in Atlanta is also a thriving, upscale mall. These malls are in densely populated, high traffic areas. The mall in Asheville used to be thriving. When we visited the Smoky Mountains in the mid 90's early 2000's we would always go to Asheville and visit the mall there. It was even remodeled and expanded in 2000. Asheville Mall was once thriving. What are my guesses to what is happening to the Asheville Mall? People are travelling to bigger cities to go mall shopping or they are shopping at stand alone stores. Our mall in Greenville South Carolina is fairly busy most of the times, especially weekends. Every Mall in Columbia South Carolina except one is about dead. I know my writing is a little scattered, but it's not just one thing that are killing the malls....

Excellent video and footage I was actually a security supervisor of this mall back in 2007 when the group from FL had it wanting to build condos and stuff on the Dillard side. I been in the generator rooms the old Verizon wireless complex and a lot of other areas that you couldn’t just see. Electrical rooms throwing sparks out from lights getting wet and shorting out. You needed a good workers comp to work here. That’s for sure. Roof top and garage I can’t believe still standing

Yes sir I have been under there…I worked at the call center (Verizon Wireless) for almost 7 years until they relocated to a new facility about 20 miles away. Even then it was an eerie and odd place - a place we were supposed to use for relaxing on breaks, etc. It was better with a lot of people coming and going but still just odd. My son likes to explore “dead malls” too and I have some footage of us walking around in there a few years ago if you’re interested. Unfortunately, the Parisian side was already closed at that time but from working in the call center I remember that side and the food court. Ah, the food court…where I once saw the people working at the Chinese/Japanese restaurant change a baby’s poopy diaper on the counter - never again did I go there…Jeez.

Thank you for sharing. I remember when this place opened and it was beautiful. I hated the parking but loved having Santa pictures taken here. I ride by here a few times a month and had no idea it closed and fallen into such decay. I'm shocked that it didn't do better with the Fort Jackson Military being so close. Parisians 2as one of my favorite stores. Fort Jackson, adjacent to Columbia, S.C. is a 53,000 acre U.S. Army Training Center. Named for President Andrew Jackson-- a South Carolina native -- it was originally established in 1917 when it trained men of the 30th and 81st Infantry Divisions. Between 1925 and 1940 it served as an encampment and training area for the S.C. National Guard. It became a permanent Army garrison in 1940 and lost its former name of Camp Jackson. After World War II Ft. Jackson became a replacement training center. During the Korean War, the 8th and 31st Infantry Divisions trained here. In 1973, Fort Jackson was appointed as a U.S. Army Training Center, and since 1995, Fort Jackson is home to new training facilities and schools; including the U.S. Army Soldier Support Institute, the Department of Defense Chaplain Center and School, and the Defense Academy for Credibility Assessment. Today, Fort Jackson is the biggest and most active Initial Entry Training center in the entire U.S Army training 50 percent of all Soldiers and 60 percent of the women entering the Army each year.

I grew up in Cincinnati and moved to Charleston SC in 1990. My favorite department store was McAlpins and J.B. Whites was owned by the same parent company, so when my mom would visit in the early 90's we would drive up to this mall to shop at the J.B. Whites. It was such a beautiful store. Haven't been back since probably the late 90's and to see the shape of it now is depressing. I remember the awesome food court, it had large model planes hanging from the ceiling. Even in the early 90's though the food court was mostly empty and the mall only about 50% occupied.

Too bad. I lived in Columbia from 1994-1997 and used to go to Richland Mall, mostly to see movies at the rooftop movie theater. Despite being in a nice area, this mall had issues. It had three nice anchors (Dillard, JB White, Parisian), a decent food court, and a great movie theater, but almost nothing else. There were a lot of vacancies in the in-between stores. It was just kind of a weird mall.

I was one of the people hired to open the Barnes & Noble before the Christmas Season in 1997. Worked there for two years and had plenty of nights sitting in the original food court while taking dinner break. Even then, you could tell the mall was struggling, as the massive food court was down to just a Chinese restaurant (not a Panda), the original Sbarro, and I think a Great Steak and Potato. To try and bolster the mall, they allowed for the opening of an arcade on the end of the food court, which was apparently something the previous owners had never allowed, because an "arcade" didn't fit the Richland "Fashion" Mall motif (but apparently the Camelot records and Babbages were somehow okay). Columbia used to have two Barnes and Nobles, one seen here, and one at Harbison near Columbiana Mall, but the decision was made years ago to close the Harbison location, which I always thought was bizarre, but I'm guessing it comes down to the Richland Mall location probably getting extremely cheap rent.

I hope you don't mind, I'm adding notes as I'm watching since it's such a long video. Most of the Dillard's space was originally Bonwit Teller after the building of the enclosed mall. When it was open air the area where Dillard's was located was originally a single, free-standing theater and was then enlarged in the 70s to include a 2nd theater.

We used to only go to mall for the movie theater. It did have a strange classy feel about it, if a bit dated. I remember being at this mall and a woman who just moved due being transferred to Fort Jackson was walking around. She looked so clueless as to what this place actually was. Told my mom she was looking for Victoria’s Secret lol. The whole mall split by a store was a very odd design. Never really like malls that force you to go through a store to get to another part of it. People were hyped about Midtown at Forest Acres. Ironically the VAS has lost some of its vision and just became more and more strip malls added over time. Has had its own problems recently with crime. Since Columbia doesn’t have any real geographic barriers, people just keep moving further and further out. A lot of dead malls in Columbia… this one, Columbia Place Mall, Dutch Square Mall, and a couple more that have been demolished already. Really only Columbiana and VAS left.

This is fantastic! It's crazy to think this is the second building/third iteration of a mall on this site. Crazy to think the 1984 renovation only lasted 4 years, I would have loved to see how awful it was. It's also really strange being at an age when I can still remember a building like this being considered super-modern, yet it's now ancient and decrepit. You can tell he put a lot of effort into it. He seemed like a bit of a Taubman but with a more post-modern taste and less geometrical. I also find it very interesting that there is a neighborhood directly next door to it, like you can look down into peoples' front yards from the call center portion. It towers over the houses that were there before even the first mall, I can't help but feel a little bad for those people having a massive palace thrown up in their front yard and watching it decay for 30+ years.

Grew up going there quite a bit. Born in ‘95 so I got a few years of it being decently occupied. Always thought it was a unique time capsule. It seemed really old even when I was a kid. The playground was fun and I remember a couple restaurants we went to with my grandparents. And there used to be a weird art/furniture store called Black Lion that was in the far end opposite the old Dillard’s. It was huge and went on forever. Seen some weird stores come and go and now it’s essentially dead. The neon in the movie theater is cool though, and it’s rarely busy so it’s not a half bad place to catch a movie. The parking garage is pretty run down but my buddies and I ride around it on the mini bikes sometimes. The backside is nasty, glad you went and saw that. My grandfather lived in that area and used to go walk in the mall every morning when all the wings were still open. The mall has always felt eerily empty, even since the late 90s. It’s definitely a unique time capsule, glad you went and checked it out. John is quite the character. He now works at a different barber shop where I get my hair cut near Richland Mall. Used to get my hair cut at a different location in the mall when I was a kid.

A friend and I were just sitting drinking coffee in a restaurant and discussing all the retail we have seen just on one nearby street come and go over the last 40 years. So many are gone, gone forever. I told him about your blog and I'm sure he will be subscribing. I don't know how the local mall is doing as I don't go there anymore. There are cars in the huge parking lot, but not like it was back in the day when the whole lot was full of cars during the Christmas shopping season. Use to sometimes park along a nearby highway and walk to the mall. It sure isn't like that this Christmas season, plenty of open and empty parking places. We have lost two malls nearby since 2020, which are being converted into office/medical spaces, and both mall have been covered in the blogs...Sears/ Macy's/ JC Penny goes, so does the mall usually.

Wow, the memories! I lived maybe a mile down the street and basically grew up in this mall from the late 80s to the early 2000s! Parisian, Bonwit Teller, TGI Friday’s, it had some good stores but was never at full capacity. I worked at the Express in this mall from 2001-2004. I was working there when 9/11 happened. There was actually a Limited right across from the Express. So many mall walkers back in the day too! I have fond memories of getting a slice of pizza at the Sbarro in the food court. I spent many weekends watching movies with friends at that theater as well. I moved away in 2006 and haven’t been back. I can’t believe it’s in such disrepair. So many memories growing up. 😢

It's interesting how no attempt to bring true high-end retail to South Carolina ever stuck. At one time you had this mall, Greenville Mall (not be confused with the still existing and thriving Haywood Mall), and The Mall at Shelter Cove down in Hilton Head, which were designed to be "better" malls in the state and they all failed. Heck, even Saks Fifth Avenue operated two locations in the state, one at the aforementioned Shelter Cove and one on King Street in Charleston, that have since shuttered.

I recently got these dead mall walkthroughs recommended to me by the algorithm and I’m glad I did. I enjoy most, but I love that you actually narrated this and gave the history of Richland Mall. I lived in Columbia for a little over a decade starting in 2009. It wasn’t much better than this even back then, but it looks like the last 12 years or so have not been kind to this place. I remember when we first moved to Columbia and I passed by it. I had already gone to the run down Dutch Square Mall so I called my wife and told her, “Hey! I think I found the good mall!” I was very wrong…

Sal this is my first time hearing of your channel, but I've been watching videos and reading blogs of Richland Mall for years and I must say you have the absolute BEST video about Richland on KZread! I mean you really broke down EVERY aspect and even included some information that I didn't even know during its original days!!! It was such a joy to watch this video man and you've got a great personality to boot! One thing that lacks with a lot of us in the retail history community is we lack authentic personality in videos like this. So thank you and keep up the great work! So am I correct that Belk, Barnes & Noble, Regal Cinemas, the barbershop (what's it's actual name again?), and the Columbia Children's Theater are the very last tenants left here? Just 5 in total. Oh and some other call center type place is currently using the old food court since Verizon moved out right?

Even though I live like just a little over an hour away, I never knew the history of this one. Fun seeing Haywood Wichard pop up, since he was also involved with a dead mall that's closer to me, Regency Mall in Augusta, GA. (That was the one he was quoted as observing "Malls are like bananas - you buy them at one price and sell them at another; Sometimes they go bad - those you throw out.")

Rooftop parking and glass entrances (usually with travellators not escalators to allow for trolleys) to the mall below are quite common in major Australian shopping centres if land is at a premium, along with multi level car parking areas - might be the influence under the ownership of LJ Hooker.

I live in Columbia; Richland Mall was nice in its heyday - it had a Bonwit Teller, Parisian and Belk's along with Barnes and Noble, TGI Fridays and a number of other places. Belk's and B&N are still there. I remember the open-air version, also. Trenholm Plaza, in the same section of Columbia has evolved and thrived as it was always an open-air shopping center. Edit: You're right, the store was still JB White and not Belk's when the renovated mall opened.

I worked in this mall when covid started. Even then it was so spooky. It wasn’t in full disrepair but it was creepy. My company had an office in there where hundreds of people worked and you wouldn’t have even known it. There were like 2 stores and 2 offices in there then. I was just waiting for an apocalypse to hit so I could take refuge there 😂 It was vintage and spooky but in a good way. I loved it. There were many entrances but we usually entered there by the Mrs. Fields cookies sign where the door says VBO. (It’s actually not a call center, similar set up but far from a call center. That door along with many other went into the huge office space. Oddly enough, I never wandered or explored the place, I would be ready to get out of there soon as work was over there. They sent us home a year after I started there in March 2020. Also, there was a Salon in Belk, I’d say that’s where the ladies were from. I didn’t know there was ever even a barber in there but my husband said he remembered. The noise does sound like the noise of cars on the roof, at least that’s what I used to think it was. You could hear it from inside the office a lot because probably half the people parked on the roof.
