My Grandfather grew up in Bilmeyer. It was a mining town of mainly freed Blacks and Irish immigrants. My grandmother has a whole book written by the people and their children of this town. I have been dying to go visit so this video makes me soooo happy. Thank you so much

The brick building housed a firetruck when I was a kid in the '70s. We spent days playing hooky in the buildings and summers swimming in the quarry. It was a great place to adventure as a youngster. I have photos and VHS video from the '90s. In 2000 I discovered a dead man(RIP) in a shed between the RR tracks and the river. The steel buildings were removed after 2006.

Eric Zolner hit the nail on the head, its a 1941 to 1947 Pontiac Streamliner, the chrome strip on the trunk was also duplicated down the hud and along each lower side on the front and rear wings, keep up the good work my friend very informative video,

The thing that strikes me when I see videos like this is that at one time that car was on a new car lot or showroom floor. Whomever bought it was very proud of their new car, and was very careful with it not to scratch the paint, etc. Now it sits in ruin forgotten and dilapidated...very sad..."What was once deluxe is now debris, I never questioned loyalty..." Tell me where that quote is from and you get 100 virtual points!!

Thought I was the only nut that thought that when I see old cars in the weeds. Picking it out, taking it home, showing the neighbors, checking out the new angled automatic (what will they think of next?) transmission etc.

We are kindred spirits I'm the same way. I also try to imagine the owners and think about how I am looking through the same windshield and glass they did and the reflection in the mirror as they did when it was new.

They had a lot of dormitories for the single men workers. The large buildings could be them. The Billmeyer family also owned a lumber and mill company on the other side of the river in York Co. One of their major products were wood doors. That door could very well be from their mill. The wood structures on top of the foundations were mostly wiped out during Hurricane Agnes, 1972. Where you were standing was under 12 feet of fast moving water.

Found these ruins back in 1980s as a teen, lived in Bainbridge from 2004-06 got a lot of exploring and photos during that time frame, was a bit shocked when I returned in 2010 to find the factory had been torn down and much of the ruins/foundations/buildings were all gone by then. Never thought to videotape my explorations though.

1940's Pontiac. The wide trim that would have went down the middle of the trunk lid is what stuck out to me.

Hi, thank you for showing us around the ruins, it never ceases to amaze me just how quickly things disappear in woodland that grows up around old villages or structures. Such a shame the other side of those tracks were posted, oh well never mind, there is so much more to see. Thanks for sharing. x

Before you approach the cliffs there were many machine shops etc to support the main building. The remaining concrete structures where they processed the limestone etc are but a shell of what was once there. A huge pipe travelled the length of the building on the interior that was both steel and brick and turned continuously (like a concrete mixer) to move the product to the finish end of the building. Across the rail tracks was where the machine shops were. Below the cliffs (towards the car) there was a general store / post office from what I was told and I believe the stone structures you showed early on were corals for horses. Before the conversion to electric there were many horses associated with the village. It's also my understanding that most of the residents stayed in tents etc and not permanent structures.

The trail is beautiful and peaceful. We enjoyed the white cliffs and the factory ruins of Bilmeyer. We'll check out the house and other building foundations now that you pointed them out. I did see the eagles in your video. They nest in that area.

Just speculating here but the first building might have been a general store. They could have had a root cellar, ice house room and another for dry storage. That is why the basement had so many rooms. Like I said though, just what came to my mind. I am by no means an expert but if I would have had a general store back then, that is what I would have done. Then have the store on the first floor and my living quarters in the second floor.

This is an interesting area WW. Over the years I spent quite a bit of time in Baimbridge. I did many investigations at the Haldeman Mansion. Yes, it is very haunted and I have night shot video tapes, EVP recordings and photos. The stone house was built in 1803 I believe and the summer house was built in the 1750s if I recall correctly. There was a Native stockade behind the mansion for centuries I was told. Archaeological digs took place there where they found pieces of turquoise that was traded with the Natives in the Southwest. You can tour the mansion and it would make a good WW video. Haldeman also corresponded with Charles Darwin back in the day. Haldeman was quite the scientist as well. The summer house has bedrooms and of course a large kitchen. This mansion was going to be torn down but the community prevented it from happening. They have little funding but got it weather tight and do what they can as they can. There is also a carriage house which was built long after the mansion. There is also the Haldeman cemetery to the south of the mansion on the same side of the road with a stone wall all the way around. It would be towards Columbia side. Worth a visit. Thanks Kindly and I'm glad you didn't run into any doll parts and clowns. Peace! DaveyJO

My thoughts on the first building, probably the school, maybe the town hall as well. The second one was more than likely the church. On the car, you can see it had a lot of chrome at one time. You can tell by the rivet holes around the fenders.

I could tell you all the buildings he owned all the property in 1983. He sold it soon after that. Cool. And a flood washed the town out before I was born

I used to work at the Incinerator beside Billmeyer we're they burn trash. They actually bought the land that Billmeyer is on about 2 years ago. Never been there because they have camera's and security goes back there at least once a day to check stuff. Ive also been inside the Haldeman mansion tons of times. My grandma was apart of group that helped prepare events that take place there. Me and my cousin used to play hide and seek inside just the two of us😳. The outside looks nice but the inside is in rough shape. Plaster falling off the walls, paint peeling, no electricity in some rooms, etc.

cindy k You are correct. The quarry was a scuba diving center for over 30 years. It was bought, not too long ago, by the company that owns the incinerator that is just south of the quarry. The incinerator, and I think the newly built soybean plant, somehow use the water from the quarry in their operations. randysdiveshop.com/bainbridge-quarry/

The car is a Pontiac 1940 to 1949 fastback. How do we know? Just from what there we know it's nothing Ford or Chrysler built in the 40's. We know it's not from Packard by what's there too. It's defiantly GM. Can't be a Chevrolet because All chivies had 6 cyl. Eng. up to 55. Buicks had all straight eights (264 and 322) but they were "Valve in Head" or overhead valve engines in the forties. Cadillac were Flat head V eights then overhead valve V eights. Oldsmobile? Nah! Pontiac L head straight eight flathead engine. Of course that 4 inch wide piece of chrome leaning on the trunk is a dead giveaway it's a Pontiac.
