I dont understand banning Russian chess players. Its not their decision to invade ukraine. If they speak out against it who knos what trouble that may bring to them back home in Russia.

Best part about Hikaru is, apart from being genius he is true gentleman and sportsman now. Can take any types of results into his stride now while giving his best! This is what real growth looks like. He is certainly a winner in this life!

In defense of classical modes of chess, the game was originally supposed to simulate warfare and tactics. What is more representative of that than classical chess' memorization and application? In military history, generals learn from their predecessors and what they have attempted before in order to use and improvise upon them. Never is it the case that all previous experience is just thrown away (with the exception of entering new eras such as the introduction of gunpowder that just invents new tactics completely) by a prospective general that "wants to do it their own new way", the barebones tactics are instead modified and updated. To 960's credit, I agree that it symbolizes the adaptability aspect of warfare, but that simply isn't enough to say that it is a purer understanding of chess at its core, at least for me. But hey, if it's more fun, then I understand why people would prefer it over normal chess.

It was that simply requiring more calculation doesn't make it the "real chess" (his words not mine) compared to classical, especially with the added historical context in my first comment about the original intent of chess itself.

I am so happy that you started streaming chess and can actually enjoy the game again.. that being said. I think there is a very good argument to say you are the best chess player in the world .. with the way classical chess is going and the use of computers, and how it’s all about prep... I feel like it means a lot more that you are so good in bullet and blitz and can actually play the game in new positions and make the best moves off of skill and not memorization.. regardless, you put out the best chess content by far and we all appreciate that.

Thing is, even if the whole of chess was replaced by 960 tomorrow, I think openings would still be worth studying to get good at 960 with. Studying openings is not just about the exact moves but about ideas and techniques and recognizing good things from bad things. So while 960 may serve a useful purpose, it's not like someone can just forget openings forever due to only playing 960.

The idea of 960 is that you can’t study preplanned opening. So it removes literal memorization of lines and emphasizes theory.

Obviously no. The opponent can just go into a long think and punish suboptimal moves that would otherwise go unpunished in blitz and rapid.
