Studio lighting staples that every photographer should master.
One caveat before we get started on this topic. I am not a fan of giving everything photographers do a name. It does make it easier to talk about, but it's not like your customer is going to come to you saying, I really love how well you do loop lighting. And just because you use some technique that has a name, doesn’t mean that it’s going to be good.
The best way to talk about this would be hours on a clock, with the camera at 6 pointed at 12.
Split lighting
Split lighting is when you set a single light at 9 or 3. This results in one side of the person's head being illuminated and something I would call, not good-well, most of the time.
Backlight or rim lighting
This is when the light is behind your subject at 12 o’clock and it can result in nice rim lighting. If you have the subject standing in profile, have them turn their head just right, you can end up with a catch light.
Butterfly lighting
This is when you boom a light at 6 o’clock slightly above and in front of your model so that it places highlights on their cheeks and a shadow under their nose that resembles a butterfly, allegedly, but I don’t see it. I guess I failed this Rorschach test. It will also exentuate their deep set eyes, but if you place it just right you can get light on their upper eye lids, which I always prefer.

Glad it helped! Making this video has caused me to be more conscious of the two, but its often hard to keep a model from posing from one side to another so I am thinking about it more during the editing process.
God, wow. So perfectly straight and to the point. You taught me more in four minutes than dozens of much longer videos (and about a year of playing with lights) have. Thank you! Subscribed.

@@JohnGress I'm sorry John, I'm a newbie at this. I think when you say "clock", my head I'm seeing the model"s FACE on the clock, and 5:00 or 7:00 would be their cheek at the jawline that the light would be pointed at. Is the "clock" vertical or horizontal for your examples?
Thank you so much this has and will help so Much

@@JohnGress Thanks, mate!
Hey John, when you say you dislike split lighting are you alluding to the fact that it is not adequately lit for portrait purposes or that you don't like the style or aesthetic that ensues? There's a duality to split lighting that I find visually quite appealing so I wanted to get your thoughts.

I just really want to see both eyes. Maybe it’s a pet peeve .
I'm trying to learn the subject to be able taking portrait photos for oil painting references, I'm thinking to use 5000K color light for best color representation to the true colors would you agree?
this really nail it for me

A bit off topic, but did you run into any issues with running the Mole-Richardson lights in your studio due to power (blowing fuses, etc?)
@JohnGress
4 жыл бұрын
There is a video for that topic: johngress.com/what-are-those-lights-i-keep-putting-in-my-photos/ Well not exactly, that is just about the lights in general . The 2k (model 412) would cause problems if I tried to plug it into the outlets in my studio, where I think I have 2 20amp circuits, so I would always plug it into my adjoining bathroom. Over time I found that the 2k just got way too hot for the model. Where are the 1k didn't really make them sweat, so I put a 1K bulb in my 2K.

3 POINT PHOTOGRAPHY
U sure u said the correct positions for loop lighting?
@JohnGress
3 жыл бұрын
What do you think is the correct position?
10. Zombie lighting! One light below the subject, aimed up. Horrible, but there it is.
I'm not American so your clocks got me very confused. Whatever they mean I didn't get it. If you had a picture showing the positions of the lights then I could understand. Sitting on a chair saying 11 o'clock 10 clock isn't very helpful.
Thank you John
