Soap & Clay is a family owned business operating in Washington State, but started out online thanks to Mrs. Soap & Clay's kickass brother and his amazing web design skills. The business was started as a tribute to Mrs. Soap & Clay's grandmother, the OG maker in the family that cultivated everyone's love for the DIY life. The studio/retail shop opened in 2017 on 6th Ave in Tacoma, and immediately began teaching soap, bath bomb, lotion, and scrub classes to the makers and maker enthusiasts of the PNW. In 2019, the pottery studio opened as well, making the soap shop a busy place full of artistic energy every minute of the day.
Mrs. Soap & Clay has been featured on Business Spotlight, New Day Northwest, and was awarded a coveted place on the South Sound's 40 under 40 list in 2019, an award given to the most influential business people under the age of 40 each year. She cried when she walked up to the podium to accept the award. A lot.
Drawing from her chemistry background and her maker spirit, Mrs. Soap & Clay infuses her favorite things into her soapy designs and creates products that are fun to see, use, and learn to make. Stick around for this ride - she'll take you on a great one.

    Well I've only used 3 so far - rose kaolin, white Kaolin and bentonite (in combo with my pumice to make a kick ass degreasing mechanic soap that works like Dawn). I went on all the sites last night to find the French green, rhassoul, anything but it's sold out like, everywhere 😫

    I had to come back to watch this, for a relesson on clays in soaps. I'm thinking of adding clay bars to my skin care line. I've had customers ask for facial bar soaps. So, I remembered you'd done this and wanted to see how much to add to a bar! Well, on certain clays Id think half that amount would work. It was great to have this video to have to come back too. Thanks for having the jazz out there to reflect upon! Jill

I haven't made my first bar of soap although, I have got the pork & beef grease through the clarification process 7 times now and it's wrapped up and sitting in the freezer, waiting for the rest of the ingredients. I have a cousin with a microbrewery so I'll use one of his beers and I'd like to put a clay in it, too.

    Hi, I was just wondering, do you adjust your amount of oil or water when adding clay to your soap recipes? I have a 52oz wooden soap mould and I want to add white kaolin clay to 70% olive oil, 20% coconut oil, 10% castor oil. I am also wondering if this would be ok or too soft a soap to make as a first soap? 😊💜🧼Jennifer

  • @MrsSoapAndClay

    @MrsSoapAndClay

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey! I don’t adjust my water when adding clay - I tend to soap most of my soaps at 2x lye with between a 3-7% superfat. What you’re making is basically a bastille soap, which I LOVE and they don’t tend to take too long to harden and get out of the mold, especially if you add clay. Have fun!

  • @jenniferbarber5815

    Hi, I have a question to ask regarding placing the soap in the oven. If you make a pound or loaf of soap, say one that is 10 bars or 42oz, and it is made in the morning, do you place it in the oven straight after it is poured or do you leave it until the end of the day and leave it in the oven overnight? If you do put it in the oven straight away, in the morning, how long for? 😊

  • @MrsSoapAndClay

    @MrsSoapAndClay

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi! I put it in the oven right away and leave it until the next day, adding more batches as the day progresses. Because we make so many batches of soap in a day, we have to reheat the oven multiple times throughout, and so the earliest batch of the day is the one that’s exposed to heat the longest.

    I remember you did a similar video earlier on the channel and was hoping you still had the bars so you could show us how the lather changed on a harder bar 😆😆😆. Anyways, what’s the deal with purple Brazilian clay?

  • @MrsSoapAndClay

    @MrsSoapAndClay

    3 жыл бұрын

    Purple Brazilian will perform most like kaolin clay in a soap. Very similar clay, for sure, and great for basically all skin types!

    im surprised you didnt burn your hands washing with them after only 1 day of curing 3 weeks is safer...also do you have soft water or hard water? there is a HUGE difference in the lather and cleaning power.

  • @MrsSoapAndClay

    @MrsSoapAndClay

    3 жыл бұрын

    Ha! That, my friend, is a very common misconception in the soaping world. Most soap is 100% safe to use within 24 hours after pouring - saponification (when the lye and the oils do their mixey mix thing) doesn’t take 3 weeks and is complete within a few hours or at most 2 days for a few recipes. The cure is not for safety, but for bar hardness as it’s losing its water weight. I did a number of videos on that, diving into the chemistry of it all - check them out for more info! :)
