Soap & Clay is a family owned business operating in Washington State, but started out online thanks to Mrs. Soap & Clay's kickass brother and his amazing web design skills. The business was started as a tribute to Mrs. Soap & Clay's grandmother, the OG maker in the family that cultivated everyone's love for the DIY life. The studio/retail shop opened in 2017 on 6th Ave in Tacoma, and immediately began teaching soap, bath bomb, lotion, and scrub classes to the makers and maker enthusiasts of the PNW. In 2019, the pottery studio opened as well, making the soap shop a busy place full of artistic energy every minute of the day.
Mrs. Soap & Clay has been featured on Business Spotlight, New Day Northwest, and was awarded a coveted place on the South Sound's 40 under 40 list in 2019, an award given to the most influential business people under the age of 40 each year. She cried when she walked up to the podium to accept the award. A lot.
Drawing from her chemistry background and her maker spirit, Mrs. Soap & Clay infuses her favorite things into her soapy designs and creates products that are fun to see, use, and learn to make. Stick around for this ride - she'll take you on a great one.

HEEEELLLPPP!!! 😱 PLEASE🙏. I've attempted my first batch of hot process liquid soap but just converted my regular cold process soap recipe to a dual lye hot process one. Weeelllll I got to the lighter color "mashed potato" stage but no further even after cooking it for an hour on high. So i waited overnight soaked a pound broken up in a 1:2 ratio of water and today i checked it and it looks like the slime like in those videos that the kids make. I cooked it again on high for almost 2 hours and it got a bit closer to that "vaseline" stage but it still looks like it's just going hard and crumbly and solid again. What am i doing wrong?

@@arielkidder136 You overcooked it. Hot process needs much more water than CP does, but how much more did you use? Not all batches will exhibit all the stages. I wouldn't bother with dual lye until you are more comfortable with HP.

I made my own soap paste....and it turned out great! I like how you teach....it makes me feel like I can do it...and it's okay to make mistakes! You are not negative, you have a positive approach to mistakes; I love this about your teaching and videos! I like how you have a matter-of-fact approach, and there is always a way to fix it, and you can do it! (I am referring matter of fact too....the spectrum of grey quote.....I can't remember the exact words). Thank you for your knowledge!

Few weeks later I am still watching you and then I sign up for like the basic patreon, next few weeks I sign up for a higher level. I made your paste and I made a whipped sugar scrub too, just like you taught. I made a mistake somewhere, not sure what I did wrong, but I couldn't break up all the soap paste, little tiny bits here and there in my scrub, but overall it was good...I liked it better than the Stephenson. First and foremost THANK YOU so so much for making these fantastic, easy to follow, "OMG I can do this"-videos! They've been so helpful in overcoming the soap imposter syndrome! :D. I am super new to soap making and tried your recipe but for whatever reason I can't get the soap to trace (even when stick blending for 10 minutes). Is there a special technique with the stick blender or do you have any guesstimates as to what I may be doing wrong (probably a whole lot). Thank you so so much!!!

  • @tiahio8315
    @tiahio83152 жыл бұрын

I ♥️ this recipe... And I'm probably doing it wrong. 🤣 I made it two days ago...not to make the liquid soap, but I did, and it's amazing! I'm thinking about making shampoo with it. But I'm not sure if I should add the extra ingredients with the recipe or when I dilute it [Suggestions welcome 😉]. I have hard water, so I need something to help with that residue. Anyway, today I formulated it to make a pine tar version. OMG! No seizing at all. With that said... Both batches I put the oil in, warmed it, made the lye mix, poured it straight in hot, and blended (hand mixed with the pine tar) and it went to I guess what you call mashed potato. Fluffy, moussey, fluffy home cooked pudding, like that. And it never changed. I did the 5 and 10 minute cooks (A little longer on the pine tar to be sure) then put it in a bag in a lidded container and let it sit. It's just like yours in the end, but I was confused because in the video you said it takes a lot longer, but a 15 minute cook time is short IMO. How do you know when it's done? Anyway so far so good. I'll see how the pine tar version works in a few days. You said no matter what you do you can't screw it up, and I'm just gonna go with that. 😁 anyway, love your videos and your chemistry/experimental mind. I've always only made cold process soap with tallow. And this past year started a business and am venturing out in other directions. Your videos help so much in that. Thank you! 🙇🏻‍♀️

The COMPLICATED directions, for this type soap.....really stressed me out, of making it. Now, here it is Christmas soon. And after a 5 year break( I didn't think I'd return...a very traumatic event, caused my passion to leave. And no amount of pleading/ begging, convinced me to try again. And I personally NEEDED my PASSION....well, I finally decided I would AGAIN, for Christmas gifts! 😊 I also had HOPE to make my family members Soap Sugar Scrubs too. Now....I just MAY still!! 😁 Iv also been growing customers as well! In 2 months!! And my little towns pharmacy too! So Sugar Scrubs would be so "nice", to add as well! But Can you please tell me, can I purchase KOH at a Hardware store, as well??? Can I ask for plain KOH.....??? I really don't need a LOT of it, either! At least for now!!! And just MAYBE I will require more.....apparently......I AM the only Soapmaker in my area!!! I DREAMED of "this"!! And I thank you, for all you teach, in plain English! And look forward to expanding my knowledge, thru you!

I’m so glad you’re finding joy in the process again! ❤️ To the KoH, I’ve never attempted to purchase any caustics from the hardware store, so I’m not sure! You can pick it up on Amazon, however.

I have no issues with making it just beware if you use a fragrance oil with a lot of vanillin it will discolor just like soaps! At least mine did.

Love your videos! Would def try this recipe as I really like using whipped soaps! Can I check what's the purity of KOH used here? Is the weight listed in recipe provided assuming 90% purity?

Love your videos! I used cocoa butter because I didn’t have mango. Then made whipped soap with your recipe but not much lather. Using the distilled water, steric acid, glycerin. I didn’t use sugar. Don’t know if I did something wrong. If I wanted to add sci, do you know when or how much to add?

Thanks for recipe, will try it tomorrow. When you take off heat do you remove from crock pot, or let it sit in there over nite, but just not on the crock pot base. I will make your sugar soap-scrub from this.

I am wondering if this recipe gets better over time? Kinda like curing? I made this a year ago to make whipped soap sugar scrub. It didn't turn out great for me. I just came back to revisit whipped sugar soap scrubs with this paste, and it tuned out PERFECTLY! Was it a year of gained soapy experience? Possibly? Anyway, thank you for all your videos. You are an amazing teacher.

hello, thank you for your knowledge, I appreciate you! I didn't have any mango butter on hand but I plugged in lard into soap calc for giggles and grins and it very comparable. I haven't tried it yet but I'm going to do a little bit of experiments. Have a wonderful day!

@@MrsSoapAndClay I’m playing around with tallow, and I have noticed it makes the soap bars very creamy, very nice. I made a turmeric milk honey soap and used 300 g each tallow olive oil canola oil and coconut oil hot process and it has lovely bubbles, a nice glide on the skin and feels very good, not drying, rinsed off. ☺️ I’m just a baby soap maker so I’m experimenting, and it’s so fun!

@@MrsSoapAndClay ok, we took 7 oz 50/50 beef tallow coconut, (not lard) chopped it up and put in the crockpot on low with 7 oz water and 6 oz glycerine. Oh and 2.8 oz steric acid. Melted it all down a few hours and put in a bowl with Saran Wrap for a couple days because we got busy. So today we got out the old kitchen aid from the basement and we added a little bit of water maybe 1.5 Oz altogether. Whipped the shit out of it added equal weight of sugar and it turned out the fluffiest meringue type soap I’ve ever seen! Thank you ! Me and the husband are going to do an experiment today we are going to make our own glycerin 😝. Gotta have fun and keeps the brain working.

i am so excited about this paste. One problem, I've followed along to a "T" and the final stage, after the last five min cook, and mine doesn't look any different than before the final five min. what should I do? Mine d didn’t get dark and render down. Looks more light and airier than your paste. I did let it cook a little longer than the last five min, but no change. I’m certain all my measurements were exact

Question: Does it have to sequester (rot) before use? Also, I recall you saying in a much earlier video that you were going to change your formulation of your foaming sugar scrubs. Did you decide to go with surfactant base for those? Or will you be selling them using this soap paste? I have been dying to try a cream soap recipe so this should be my first. I have tried several of the surfactant-based whipped soaps and have not been in love with any of them sadly. You don’t know how much this helps me!!!!

Ok soap i made this. Just switched out mango for shea. First time ever using potassium hydroxide. First time in over 30 years I slashed lye in my face too..... but my main question is since I had to tame a climbing beast and failed during the second cook, I ended up at Vaseline stage and just kind of got stuck there. The soap/ish is pasty but alot softer than yours seems. Think it still has alot of extra water in it. Would that effect at all in using it for whipped soap? Another first for me. Anyway.... it does create an Abscene amount of suds and foam. My table is still foamy if you add water. And I clean up with cider even. Lol

I just made this but the color is much lighter than your lovely honey color. Consistency seems right though. When making foaming sugar scrub, is it absolutely necessary to use preservative? (I will be selling it, but trying to keep my products as natural as possible). By the way, you are brilliant! I love your straightforward, matter of fact way of explaining things.
