I was thinking that it might be easier to cut the tiles in a straight line instead of singular. Already spaced evenly. Overall pretty cool idea for upgrading the basic 👌🏾

Yeah, I agree, cut them in strips instead of individual pieces.

Sounds like that might work. But, first measure your frame and the line of tiles since you might need to adjust the space between tiles depending on the mirror measurements.

Great idea 💡🙂
While creative, that's a lot of weight added to a delicate flimsy light weight card board backed mirror. It is EIGHT BUCKS FOR A REASON. To adhere/with adhesive to the back of a hollow core door I strongly suggest fortifying the backing with plywood, particle board, old paneling before you add that massive weight. PLUS: If you plan on hanging it be sure to use a better method for attaching your anchors. The hooks it came with are not anchored, but glued and it will not be adequate to support that added heavy weight. LASTLY: If you plan on leaning it against a wall, be sure to anchor it or hinge it by attaching to the wall if you have small kids or pets. Broken mirror/glass can sever an artery before you can dial 911. When falling it is human nature to put your hand up, making your wrist venerable. Safety first before inexpensive decorating. HOMETALK: I strongly advise a remake of this design. This is a dangerous idea.

If you look at the finished mirror you can see it is bending under the weight.

It is definitely buckling or warping under the weight.

Thank you for this post. Saved me time from making almost the same comment. The title is misleading. The mirror costs about $7-8. BUT, the cost of the tiles and glue aren't included. If you need to add a plywood backing for strength, that's another extra cost.
Very nice, but Amazon has very light aluminum self adhesive tiles that are much easier to apply and won't add 10 lbs of weight to the mirror.

Any suggestions for the exposed sticky parts of the aluminum/vinyl tiles that don’t come in contact with the frame of the mirror? I picture pet/human hair and dust bunnies getting stuck and hanging off the mirror.
I made one like this last year after seeing it on Pinterest & thinking it was such a great idea. It's NOT! I even added a thin plywood backing to mine but I only glued it to the mirror since like most of these frames they're hollow on the back & sit higher than the mirror that they're partway glued on to. On mine the top half of the plastic frame part broke from the weight and off. Do yourself a favor and remove the frame from the mirror, glue the mirror to a piece of plywood cut the size of your mirror plus the size of your tile & grout spacing . I laid my tile on the plywood, laid out my tile around it to get the size I needed plus grout lines, drew a line all the way around and cut the plywood.

Thank you for this. I was wondering how well this would hold up seeing how flimsy they are without the added weight.

I was wondering how well these tiles would stay on, especially when they look like they went pass the frame and the tile left a gap from mirror. I would add grout between tile and mirror.

🤔 Why not just cut the tiles into long strips and use the spacing that they're already applied to the backing mat with?
@modifiedmomma2365
2 жыл бұрын
It won’t always be the exact spacing depending on the mirror size. It’s all depending on the tile size and the mirror size and not cutting it could lead to the tile strip being too short or overhanging too much to fit. I’m sure it could be done, but it would likely limit tile options

Great project
The only thing I would suggest is to add a piece of thin plywood to the entire back. With the added weight of tiles it has a tendency of wanting to warp if not lying flat..Some of the cheaper mirrors only have a cardboard backing with is not enough to support the weight of added tiles. Great look and Upgrade for the mirror👍

Love it! I want to do this and try to put led strip lights under the tile on the mirror. My husband did tile too, and we would use his leftovers for projects like this. We got some concrete bird baths and a concrete bench for the garden and did this to them. 💙

My concern is that the frame may flex when moving and positioning, making the tile work unstable. Is that the case?

I would like to attach 4 or 5 of these mirrors side by side to a larger, lightweight backing such as a thin sheet of plywood, to make a large wall hanging and then do these tiles around all the edges.

Hi, just be mindful of the entire weight of your project. You might need to add some heavy duty wall hangers and/or use the studs in the wall for support to protect your wall board. You sure don't want to risk the project falling and taking chunks of your wall with it.

How does the grout stay in the area where there isn't anything behind it? Seems like it might just crumble away after a while because grout needs a surface to stick to.
I have one of those mirrors from walmart and i would have some concern adding that much weight to it since its so flimsy, but I do like the idea.
