This guy usually laughs while passing the leader, hangs out with the sweep to talk about the love of riding and generally makes everyone in the group question their riding abilities that they were once confident about. ADV Guy here. It's not that we feel that we need to pack all that shit for a day ride, it's just that our bikes are always packed for any ride - be it for the afternoon or all of next month. The sidecase is packed and stays that way. And the reason we carry so much stuff is that a lot of us grew up riding '60s era Brit Bikes and we usually needed most of it.

I grew up with early Japanese motorcycles. Most were good for a year or two before they needed serious work. They were no worse or better than their European counterparts. In short, motorcycle manufacturers put those tool cases in the bikes for a reason. You will need them. Today my bike has more electronics on it than most airplanes but it still needs to be maintained and or fixed. Fixing is a relative term especially when you find yourself pushing your bike 3 miles down the road because it stopped running because of a fouled plug. Now, I always carry “stuff” with me whether it is warmer clothes, food, water or a tire repair kit or simple hand tools, and yes, a set of spark plugs, and yes, it happened to me and I didn’t have a spare plug....

Regarding the noob, i've experienced and been told that it's best to put him (or her) right behind the leader. Having the slowest rider up front dictates the groups overall speed, so it's at the noobs comfort level. If the noob is at the back, he might be urged to drive faster than his skill, just to keep with the faster guys in front. So, always stack the pack from slowest to fastest (except the leader and the sweep of course).

I used to hate people who suggested going for a ride, which in their eyes meant going 5 miles down the road to cafe spending 2 hours talking and then home! Preferably go out by myself but enjoy an encounter with another bike, playing for a few miles overtaking each other. Then going separate ways without stopping and only a quick chat if you have to stop at lights.

Can’t forget the “Busted bike guy”, who shows up on an old F4i that’s been used and abused since it was new, and it’s falling apart. Basically the bike is held together with zip ties and has been crashed multiple times. OMG, this list is on point. I love the sweep, I've had guys on full-dress Harleys with a girl on the back carrying twice my speed through bends, with ease. I've also had some great leaders who were much faster than me, but communicated well and knew how to stop and catch everyone up, made the ride a lot of fun for everyone. I don't seem to fit any of these, so I must be #8, guy in the middle of the pack, nice enough, good enough, no biggie.

So far I've never seen any stunters in a group ride, fortunately. And the noobs are usually in the front, right behind the leader, so that the leader can keep an eye on them and make sure he's not going too fast for the new riders. So the second bike determines the speed of the group. I'm usually in the back, I think the best position is the last position. You can see all riders in front of you and see what they're doing, and you have more variety in speed. If the whole group can't make it in one go across an intersection or a traffic light, then it's good when the fastest riders are in the back, they will catch up easier.

The noob is absolutely spot on. Man, kinda embarrassing getting called out so picture perfectly in a video. Lol. Though it was a 85 virago 700, IIRC. So id had my license for all of a few weeks when my dad decides were going on a ride with a group of churches for a charity thing. I get put in the no2 position, so nobody to watch but the lead. I didnt know how to stagger myself, but i remembered that pictute from the study material I had to read to get my license. So I happily park myself, staggered, all of 2 feet behind the leader. He starts out at like 60, but by the end were ripping 75 everywhere and im loving it. At the end of the ride, I get "talked too" by all the experienced riders who got left behind. Turns out the lead kept speeding up to try and get a gap between us. Lol. But 17 year old me just thought he wanted to go and have fun 🤷‍♂️

You forgot the Gromblins, people who show up on Grom bikes and immediately flee the scene if and or when you or someone you know get's pulled over. Also, yeah I know the only place you'll encounter Gromblins is in the city, but still if you're doing a meetup and one of these guys shows up for city driving. Expect him to pop the most illegal wheelies while wearing shorts and sandals. Just to get the nearest officer to pull YOU over and then run away on his leaf blower of a motorcycle. I freaking hate Gromblins man...

Funny that in the groups I participate here in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the Noobs are put right behind the leader, mixed with more experienced drivers but always at the first half of the pack. Who dictates the rhythm are 'the noobs in the front' to keep it safe for everybody. What counts in the end of the day is that everyone gets in one piece back home.
