    I'll always remember the one time I visited Germany, while in the US Air Force coming back from Kuwait. We supposed to stay on base, but there weren't enough rooms available, so they booked us a hotel off base. We arrived at our hotel late in the evening (which was a small ski resort in a very small village in the mountains about an hour's drive from Rammstein Air Base, but we were there in late summer, and it was totally deserted). The restaurants in town were already closed along with the kitchen at the hotel, but we were starving since we hadn't eaten since leaving Kuwait. I'll always remember how wonderful and hospitable the staff was. Even though the kitchen was closed, we went to the bar which was attended by the same man who checked us in at the front desk. He realized we hadn't eaten and some of the maids came down and went into the kitchen and made us cheese noodles. They were delicious! I think they were just German egg noodles in a homemade creamy cheese sauce that they put together for us at the last moment. They tasted amazing though. It was a good memory as it was my only visit to Germany. I hope to return sometime. There are lot of traditional dishes I want to try.

    That is great memory 🤩 they did give you Käsespätzle. Usually very easy dish to assemble, especially when you have Spätzle in the fridge (what the restaurants in Southern Germany have).

    I make a dish similar to Krautnudeln. It's called Halushki. It's made with Cabbage, Onions and Noodles. Sometimes I will fry Sauerkraut with it also. My wife likes to put cheese on it.

    Thank you for your recipes. I plan on trying them all. I really missed your Vlogs! My go to quick dinner is French Onion soup. I pull apart the toasted baquette pieces before adding the soup and cheese, then broiling, so it is easier to eat and not so messy.

    I grew up with the milk salad dressing. My mother would usually make it during the spring and early summer when we had fresh lettuce from the garden - all my aunts made it too. Best salad dressing ever, my mother used vinegar rather than fresh lemon - I suppose it was because of the lack and expense of fresh lemons when fixing food for a family of nine. The last recipe of pancakes looks like it would be my favorite. Not a fan of the raw sliced cucumbers, lol -- even though they were always on meal table when cucumbers were fresh from the garden.

    The German potato cake looks great with the bacon and cheese. I’ve got the mix from Germany, I just need to add bacon and cheese. What cheese do you recommend?

  • @cooking-the-world

    @cooking-the-world

    I would go for a mild or semi mild one. Egg is also mild in taste, stinky cheese would be the wrong choice here.

    A tip: Don't boil your potatoes. Steam them. Steaming keeps all the potato flavor in. For my quick meals, I'd say; bauernfrühstück, schinken noodle, or bratwurst with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. But there's another, I just can't get it here in the US. It's canned _(weißer)_ pressack _(you know... with the gelatin and lard, that you can spread the two on bauernbrot)_ and then served with _(made from pre-boiled/steamed)_ fried potatoes.
