I hate it when strangers who are #5 try approaching me to give me 'advice'. I'm quietly doing macro work, about to get my shot of the day of a beautiful butterfly, and there's just this one random person showing up next to me, casting shadow on my future shot and telling me to keep my elbows in. Eff you, the butterfly's gone now.

11/10/2017 The worst photographer of all is the professional with a fucking snob attitude, that he/she is better than anyone else. With over forty years experience, I love it when a beginner asks me a question. There's a special place in hell for those who are self-important and unwilling to share their knowledge.

I was taking photos of surfers recently and a guy with a camera came up to me and asked all about my lens, camera, card, ISO, shutter speed etc. He then started photographing as well and had to show me every image he took as he took them ... finally as I was leaving he gave me his "photography business" card - bad fonts over an out of focus picture he had taken. Your sketch just nailed it all, hilarious, thanks..!! : )

  • @-BuddyGuy

    @-BuddyGuy

He was talking about film as a recording medium for photography. You know, slides of photoresist on a reel that you put in your camera. Putting that mistake aside, you're still wrong. It is not true that anyone who shoots video is above all. It's a different set of skills where totally average photography can be forgiven and is just one creative element in a video. Likewise if the photography is awesome, a bad story might be forgiven. It's also a collaborative effort, so not really comparable. You would have to clarify if you thought a photographer wouldn't usually be a good director, DP, AD, producer, actor, screenwriter, gaffer, camera operator, etc. You should also know that Kubrick was a photographer before he made films.

Camera geek satire at its best. I have watched a lot of the Northrup's videos, but this video has cemented them for me as camera authorities I would say I trust, because they don't give us a load of malarkey. They don't take themselves too seriously but do provide considerable expertise. Really like they make this hobby (for many of us) a lot of fun.

The most annoying thing I have always encountered is going out of my way to avoid other people and find an isolated, well distanced spot to take a photo only to have that one person start to follow me and decide that out of all the space available to them that they are going to place themselves directly in front of me. No matter how polite I am to keep out of other peoples way, there is always those people who will get in me way.

This is why I go shooting alone though. lol! It's hard to find people who match your personality, and that take the craft as serious as you so you can actually enjoy the company. A few weeks ago I made the mistake to ask a random person on a new trail if I was going the right way. I was in heaven until then. They tagged along even though I said no thanks, wouldn't shush, and constantly wanted to look at my camera, while also point all over the place to tell me where they've been. -_- Ended my trip short because I could not focus, and this person was determined to get on my personal space. I won't be asking if I'm going the right way again.

I think as "Photographers" we all need to start somewhere, we all have different journeys to reach where we strive to be. I believe it's really important to be gracious to everyone you meet in life, despite how frustrating the the individual or situation can be. It's good to remember, you will meet everyone you met on your way up again on your way back down.

I take a lot of time with my photography, i carefully take them on faraway places where i haven't been before, often i walk long ways on foot to get there. I then edit them in lightroom and photoshop, which takes a long time sometimes. And sometimes even after a whole day, it turns out none of the photos i took were good. I have many female friends, that take photos on their iphone 5s's, put a filter on, and then post it to instagram. They get hundreds of likes and have thousands of followers. With this i can conclude that instagram is not a good place for serious photographers ...

Take Instagram with a grain of salt. It is a popularity game, just like Facebook. I know people who take terrible out-of-focus, crooked and poorly exposed images all the time and most of their followers will give the images a like. It's as though the mentality is, "Oh, Lea has posted a photo, I'd better give it a like", regardless of whether it is good or bad. I have seen celebrities take terrible pictures and still receive thousands of likes. We have a local news presenter here who posts lots of images and all of his fans suck up to him and tell him how great his images are when they are average at best. This is the way it goes in life, unfortunately. Talent and social media have nothing to do with one another.

Wellstar the main question i have is do they post a decent amount of selfies, say at least 1 a week? if so that might be a key point as to why they gain lots of followers. plus the "photography" tag doesnt work on instagram. or at least nothing shows up when i type it in. so tags could also be a key point into their follower count ect. but either way i agree, instagram isnt the best place for photographers. but at least it does open up your work to people who might like looking at photography but cant do it their selves

Try the *VSCO* app. It's only about the photography - none of that popularity crap. No one can see who's following you or who you're following. And no one can see who likes your picture, and vice versa. It's all about enjoying the photography.

+Jared Hammonds If you don't love photo forums, why are you there? The people who don't upload may just have no intention of submitting their photos for approval by the ignorant. Of course it's possible that the critiques are equally ignorant, that depends on the individual. But in my time on forums I've noticed that the greater ignorance and maliciousness comes from the types who call a critique into question because there's no gallery. A critique is either valid or not on its own merits, nothing more. If you disagree with the critique, you're free to explain why. But the "where's your photos!" response is a stupid ad hominem.
