    Ahh VAX and AS/400. A lot of government agencies and hotels still use AS/400. I only know of 1 corporation that uses VAX and that is a sports betting company.

    my first computer I owned ran windows ME i bought it used, it was so bad it made me seek out a free alternative, was using Ubuntu 7.04 within a month. I credit my being a Linux power user today to Windows ME

    As a normal user that was just playing games back then, I had zero problem with windows ME, I didn't know it was buggy for a long time after that period I even used to dual boot it with my WindowsXP just to have it, I was heartbroken when I found out my favorite OS from old days is so hated on the internet 😔

    ME was the last version of windows I ever owned, and honestly I never noticed a difference in stability between it and 98se, they were both pretty crash-happy, if anything it seemed more stable but that was likely due to the fact that that computer shipped with it and had the correct drivers/settings on the restore disk. I eventually put SUSE on that computer so most of my experience with XP is my grandparents computer that had some sort of virus or spyware all the time and needed to be constantly wiped and re-installed, never got the love for XP, it always just looked like more of the same.

    While "Copland" was arguably one of the worst OSes ever (ever heard of the DEC VAX?), it at the same time became the best thing to happen at Apple since it's founding by being the primary catalyst for the return of Steve Jobs as CEO in 1997. The rest, as they say, is history.

    Windows ME is joked as Mistake Edition. The next worst Windows is Windows 8. Some say Vista is bad, but once Microsoft fixed the problems with service pack, it wasn't as bad

    To your off-handed comment implying Wine does not work very well in this day and age, much less in around the turn of the century, I’d say Wine is working quite well these days. Proton’s foundation is Wine, and thanks to how well it works, we are no longer enslaved to Microsoft for our gaming PC needs. It’s not flawless, but it’s pretty darn impressive, I’d say.

  • @1Raptor85

    @1Raptor85

    WINE also worked extremely well back then too, it was just very, VERY manual, generally whatever you were trying to run you'd hop on appdb and there would be bash scripts/instructions/etc on how to get the program working stable, which generally involved copying dll files, installing components, etc (windows programs are awful about listing dependencies). I used to have almost as much fun with the process of writing up the procedures and scripts on new games as they came out than actually playing them. (honestly most games you just installed the native directx dlls, vc runtime, and maybe the windows networking dlls and that was it). Things like proton and lutris essentially automated all of that, made it a LOT easier for end users to just one-click run and install.

    Note how I first broke into Linux at work that was SuSE Linux and I had to program eight computers with it... The trouble was the 24 CD installment system...and if you got them installed in the wrong order...you were screwed... I mean they had 14 for daily use and another 10 for server...and three you had to use twice... The server took any combination of the 24 CDs and one disk that you had to put in five times...two four times and one three times to get the server locked in... My journey through Microhell...started when a stupid relative banned anything outside the specs of the Windows computer...meaning that I needed to gain more funds to use my Linux training in a home built computer... As revenge...I installed Win 2000 Pro on that computer... She didn't know the difference...😹😹😹 I was sort of weened in RHEL for two years before deciding that it was too heavy for me and scratched that off my list... I liked the origins of SuSE...and by the time I got it on my first computer build (in Las Vegas in 2002...it was already obsolete...but workable for my writing projects... I tried Ubuntu and Zorin which weren't my Cup of tea...and the latter was crashing on me an average of six times a day just doing routine work... I took a detour into Debian...and finally Mint where it has a good mix of what I liked most from both Ubuntu and Debian... I just never looked back from that moment on... Even all my builds since 2006 have had Mint on them...including the one I have planned now... Now I'm glad they didn't have to go through that today...and I stuck with Mint since 2006...

    hi, the DPRK does not restict their citizens to certain websites, they can access a lot of the same websites we have. the difference is that citizens prefer localized social media as it is media made by Koreans for Koreans. this exact same thing is true for citizens of other non-western/non-english speaking countries. i ran into the issue with websites not loading when i tried using RedStarOS, but i believe that was primarily due to the fact that i was doing it in a VM, and also due to the language barrier. i do not know Korean at all, and every walkthrough i could find was for older versions.

    i've been following your channel for a while now (few years i think) and i greatly value your reviews, but your assessment of RedStarOS is more political than objective. i hope you take this into consideration.

    for example, i know for a fact that DPRK citizens have access to and do use websites like Google. They use a lot of US/Western sites for things like learning English and reading the news, and children in the country have access to books like the Harry Potter series. They are not being restricted, they just prefer their own stuff for the most part. Again, the same thing can be said for other countries. Many countries have their own versions of Facebook, KZread, Twitter, etc. They exist in their own social and cultural circles, and that's fine.

    also, the point about malware tracking everything users do, we literally have the same thing here in the US. the US government tracks what we do. i fail to see how this is any different.
