The 5 Levels of Self-Discipline

About the first level, I'd like to add something my therapist once told me: I told him I was having trouble keeping my promises to myself because there was no accountability, because if I didn't do something I promised myself I would do, "no one would know". He stopped me and said: "what do you mean no one? You would know. You ARE someone." So just a friendly reminder. You ARE someone, and keeping your promises to yourself matters, because you matter.

@@TheEncouragementKid It's SO important to start keeping the promises you make to yourself, as you said it builds trust in yourself, and you start making it a habit to actually DO the things you want to do, because it's almost like making plans with a friend, except that friend is yourself.

Some years ago, while I was in a deep rut, I wasn't able to get out of bed before 10AM. So I made a commitment with two of my friends: I had to send them everyday a selfie of me out of bed before 8AM, or else I would pay them 1€. It lasted 6months, I ended up with a regular wake up schedule and owing them 20€. I used them to buy them drink as a thank you, and it was worth every cent.

We can't only blame high school, because i don't think students would even understand the importance of self-discipline at that age. During that time, they would think about enjoying their life. Plus, since school is basically rote learning and getting good grades, if anyone introduces self-discipline as a subject, then they might just do it for the grades and not actually practice the basic principles.

The key to self-discipline is accountability. When your boss tells you to be to work at a specific time, you are there at a specific time because your boss is relying on you. When your little brother asks you to pick them up from school, you do it because he is relying on you. The obligations we have to each other is what makes us disciplined. But what about our personal goals? What about that instrument you've been meaning to learn or the workout routine you're trying to stick to? With these personal goals, there's nobody else really relying on us. So we can't really tap accountability to improve our self-discipline, can we? Actually we can, there are five levels of self-discipline. Each levels in this model has to do with a different type of accountability that can be applied to augment and improve your levels of self-discipline. level 1 : accountability to yourself Make a plan, write down what are you going to do specifically, and what conditions may cause you to fail. level 2 : accountability partners One person in specific, don't tell everybody. Create consequences for failing. level 3 : coaches and teachers Someone who is invested in your success. level 4 : teams & organizations Your personal goal becomes aligned with a common goal. Have other people who are relying on you to do your part. level 5 : leadership Instead of people rely on you just to do your part, now everyone is relying on you to guide them as well. When you're a leader, the accountability is at its highest point, but also the responsibility and the consequences for failure are as well. Good Luck, stay strong!

Which it isn’t wrong, it’s their content and their audience after all. But, I would love to find more gurus that speak about family productivity as well since I would like to have my own family one day.

So I've been doing the whole self reflecting thing lately, and realized something very important that has to do with number one. I was having issues with self worth and self respect. Then I took a third person inventory of my relationship with myself. I looked and said if someone I was friends with or in a relationship with did what I do(flake on the things you promise you'll do, not move towards your goals, chase short term pleasure as a distraction from the relationship with yourself), would you like that person? Emphatically no. As soon as you realize self accountability is an aspect of your relationship with yourself, which determines how you feel about yourself, which impacts how you treat others, you immediately see its importance. At least that's been my experience

Self discipline imo is an emergent property from keeping yourself focused on a single thought and not having that thought displaced. How you get that thought to stay and not be distracted is the hard part. Accountability and having others is one way. But I think the common factor is keeping a single thought in your head and not letting it be replaced by another.

I consume a lot of motivational and inspirational content like music, podcasts, and interviews/KZread and even posts on Pinterest, but some ppl use Instagram and tik tok instead. An example of a motivational song: I wanna get better by bleachers. You don't necessarily need a book, don't waste money if you're depressed that's already going to be hard to read the book or not zone out. Also there's a thing I've been trying that might be more of a self love or self parenting thing but I tell myself I'm proud of myself when I do a task I needed to do and remind myself I'm getting better/making strides and can keep going. So that kinda works as a dopamine hit and produces a positive mood associated to it, 😂 in case you have dopamine issues as well as me. P. S. Sorry for the run on sentence. Oh and push-ups help too in a weird way 😂 but you can also try whatever form of exercise you like too like dancing alone in your room. Just start the day off doing something that gets you jazzed to be alive. Okay I'm going to go now.... If any of this was useful let me know.

I use to have SO much discipline, life happened and caused so many changes I HATE ab myself. I want to change ways and be different but jus couldn’t get myself to do it - BUT when it comes to work.. I can get myself to get up and get dressed and do my job which is long hours and very stressful.. so one may think much harder than cleaning, or eating better, etc.. yet getting myself to do anything positive for myself seems impossible. Recently I tried to trick my mind into thinking I HAD to do those certain things for work, or Bc my big boss said so or make up something like that in my head hoping I’d be able to find the whatever to actually do it... ugh I hate it. I hate this. I hate not even remembering what it feels like to be.. heck to even be content.. but especially happy.. tired of it being so rare for me to genuinely smile over anything at all.. no idea what my real laugh sounds like anymore. It’s so so lonely. “Surrounded by people, but feeling so alone” is such a real, miserable thing. 💔💔 Me just realizing you have sooo many subscribers and will prob not see/reply to this lol is this relatable at all?

Love that you have a kitty friend! You discuss some great strategies for setting and meeting goals, along with staying accountable. I will say, though, for people who are perfectionists, have anxiety, or are particularly hard on themselves, ruminate on "failure" when they don't meet their goals, having a flexible mindset. Even if you set a personal goal of doing something 7 days a week, maybe doing that thing 5 or 6 out of 7 days a week can be considered a success.

I think that you need to discuss ownership next. In the book Mine, it's discussed how the stories we tell about ownership determine who owns or is owed something. This is important because, even with the best of intentions, you can tell yourself you're owed something to yourself and that can become a destructive feedback loop that affects your accountability. Which I myself would contrast with Emmanuel Levinas' views on Responsibility.

I think the whole concept might be about taking responsibility. Stop avoiding responsibility, and do what needs to be done. It might not be fun, but it will make your life better and those around you. Otherwise, you will go on about life blaming others and situations around you. Take responsibility, and work with what you have.

For those who are interested in the topic of the video and probably are looking for more ways to be disciplined, I would highly suggest people read Atomic Habits by James Clear. The way he breaks down the benefits of habits and how to create good habits and break bad ones in a concise and easy-to-understand way is awesome. Also, for those who are not really into reading the whole audio book is on Spotify, so there are no excuses!

Hey Thomas! Love your videos but quick thing. If you're going to use that Shure SM7B for audio, move the mic closer to your mouth. It might be just me but I think you're having to turn the gain up so much that it's getting a little bit of reverb or certain frequencies get exaggerated and the sound becomes a little harsh to the ear. Jayztwocents did a video about how he wasn't impressed with the SM7B until he started using it right.

Personal notes : Its all in the accountability... 5 levels of discipline: 1. 2:10 Accountability to yourself. It's the weakest one but not weak itself necessarily. Every time we make a plan or decide to do something, we are trying to make our future self accountable. 1.1 make it tangible. Write it down. 1.2 be very specific. Write it EXACTLY and try to find and write down the things that you think might cause you to fail. And when you face problems, you might see that its not the stuff you wrote down initially and rule it out more quickly since it's not a big a deal. 2. 3:50 Accountability Partners. Someone who cares about you and who WILL keep you accountable. Try not to talk about your goals very much because it'll cause you to feel like you've done something but in reality, you haven't. 3. 5:50 Coaches and Teachers. These are professionals in the field you're trying to learn and what they do is teach. So they can hold you accountable really well. 4. 7:20 Teams and Organizations. Your personal goals becomes aligned with team and they rely on you. And that makes it super powerful. Since most likely, those people have the same goals as you. It becomes better still if your input and contributions matter to all the members. 5. 9:10 Leadership. Now everyone actually RELY on you and the stakes are high. Highest accountability there is...

I have been trying to find an accounting partner for some of my personal goals, but I fear that the other person might not have the same value as me and might not be committed to it. Because of this I don't usually tell other people about my goals. I know that this is trust issues that i need to work on.
