    I used to make fun of 45 GAP as being a meme cartridge, but after hearing the reasoning behind the development of it I’m actually kinda bummed it didn’t take off. Great explanation Chris.

    Thanks Chris, I have a 37 model gen 1 from the late 2003 time frame, it doesn't miss a beat and the finish has been outstanding. I carry the 37 GAP around hog hunting as a backup because it's much lighter than the 1911 and with all the constant movement in the woods hot humid environment, looking for hogs the finish is unbelievably durable.

    The biggest fail of the 45GAP is the fact they made the round smaller but yet you have less capacity than the 45ACP G21. Granted its a smaller grip. If they were to match the capacity of the G21/30 then the gun would be more successful.

    The issue is Glock wanted to reuse the 9mm frames and have a slimmer grip, which given .45 caliber is much wider than 9mm (.355 caliber) meant in order to have the same frame, the rounds are stacked much less efficiently for capacity. Somewhere closer to 1.5 stack rather than full double stack. I do wonder how an efficiently stacked double stack .45GAP would be, though most people who like .45 would be willing to deal with a slightly longer grip anyways in exchange for more common ammo. The benefit of .45GAP was simply too small to warrant anyone switching.

    I know the ammo debate has been "settled" and 9mm won, but in Chicago, an officer was recently convicted of murder because he emptied 16 rounds from his S&W 9mm into a guy high on PCP who came at him with a knife. The idea that it's better to have more rounds of 9mm is true in a combat situation, but in a situation where people totally ignorant of proper firearms training are deciding your fate, it might be better to sacrifice capacity to have bigger bullets.

  • @themorningstar4512

    @themorningstar4512

    The only reasons 9mm won were simple...cost and more rounds out of micro compacts. Other than that, 40 and 45 are superior in every other way, especially since extended mags and comps are becoming standard gear in the professional side of things as well as the not so professional side.

  • @stephenkitcoff9177

    The .40 has 10,000 psi more chamber pressure. More muzzle flip to control. When east coast police forces trialed the GAP cartridge they got higher first time success in qualifications. It also had a smaller grip and that helped women on the police force in the grip. It is a shame this did not have wider acceptance.

  • @RaderizDorret

    I think the main problem with the 45 GAP was timing. It hit the market in 2003 and then the Assault Weapons Ban ended and thus you could now get standard capacity magazines for 9mm and .40 S&W (which the police already had access to). Interesting concept but bad timing.

    It's rare and appreciated to find someone who respects the intentions behind this cartridge. The common, dismissive notion that it was simply an answer to a problem nobody had rings hollow to me as a Glock owner with smaller hands. The 20/21 grip is not ideal for me, and the .45 GAP gives me a bigger-caliber option that isn't a 1911. Some people forget or ignore that this cartridge began development in the context of the notorious AWB. If that had stayed around, thereby prohibiting civilians from enjoying the larger capacities afforded by the 9's and 40's, a modernized .45 cartridge in the same frame might have had a bit more appeal than it does in our timeline.

I have NOT shot it like that yet, and won't til I hear back from Glock. The 22 holds 15 rounds of .40, and I'm going to order a 4th gen model 37 this week. I want to see how many rounds the 22 mag holds, it might stop people from fussing about capacity..

    I was at my local armory many years ago and saw one of these for $200 on consignment. At first I got excited because I thought it was 45 acp, and was gonna slap my money on the table. When I saw it was GAP, I still considered buying it but they had boat loads of ammo for it, and the price of ammo for it scared me away. But since that day, I've collected glocks and now I wish I would've bought it. Such an oddball gun.

I love the fact my G17 (flawless polymer 80 build) can shoot so many different calibers with just a slide swap! And an auto sear can just slide in. And it can be made into a pseudo sub gun in a breeze. And they love +p ammo. Idk why I was ever a Glock hater😆

    One of the most underrated handguns of all time, the G38. However I disagree about ease of finding ammo readily available at local stores and being the same price. I can at least find 45 acp on sale or for pretty cheap somewhere like Walmart or rural king. The 45GAP , not so much. This cartridge is victim of old school 45 acp enthusiasts not wanting to accept another 45 cartridge that wasn’t made legendary by John Moses Browning. I would absolutely love a G38, but unfortunately I’d more than likely have to buy ammo online and it would be my one and only odd ball caliber. Not the end of the world but just an inconvenience I don’t deem necessary. My G30S does just fine and it’s 10+1 with the option of 13+1 instead of the 45 gap glocks that go 8+1 and 10+1. Who knows, one day I may stumble across a deal on a G38 and buy it, but it would have to be one hell of a deal

    I don't think I'd say "tradition" was the problem here. It was probably some combination of "inertia" and a lack of market demand. Inertia: this wasn't going to be adaptable or useful for all the guys who are "invested" in 45ACP. Think of all the IPSC/USPSA/IDPA 1911 guys who have tons of brass and their favorite powder recipes for reloading. There's so many 45ACP guns already out there and if folks are already shooting those guns comfortably they aren't looking for a smaller grip. For the ones who ditched the 45ACP for a 9mm or 40S&W because they had smaller hands they would now be invested their new caliber and would be reluctant to go back to try something else. Market Demand: for police departments to buy this they'd likely be ditching their 40S&W pistols for something with less magazine capacity and not much more power. The general feeling that mag capacity & low recoil mattered more than bullet diameter was starting to be felt in the mid 2000s. It just took the FBI telling everyone about it a few years later to actually take hold. Adopting a new gun & caliber is a significant investment individuals are not likely to make. The best market for this caliber was guys who like Glocks & also appreciate innovation. While there's a lot of those guys there probably aren't enough to carry this through. Quite frankly, if the US Military was adamant about a 45 caliber round and also having a pistol smaller statured soldier could hold then they would be the perfect customer for the 45GAP.

    Do you think other manufacturers making smaller framed 45s more recently hurt the concept of this design? When they made this design you pretty much had to buy a full size model or a 1911, correct? Now there’s the P320, M&P, XD and XDM etc.

    I recently bought a Springfield XDS Mod 2 in .45 ACP. And no I don't think it hurts the original 1911 concept. If anything it enhances the 1911 design. But I'll put it this way, the XDS is my first and last polymer gun. I think Polymer did more harm to guns than any concept ever devised. The XDS @ 21.5 ounces is addiquit but not confortable for .45 ACP, and not optimal in my opinion. And when shooting it you get the feeling it eventually will fail under the pressure. My Sig Sauer all steel 1911 is more than standing up to the pressure and recoil of .45 cal. I believe 30-32 ounces is the bare minimum weight of a gun shooting a bullet of .45 caliber and up. The XDS is relegated to being my Jeep gun.

    A great video with lots of background data on the .45 GAP round. It seems like a dead caliber, but if civilians including police were to be limited to 10 round magazines the G37 would be a great pick for a service pistol, with the subcompact G39 for backup and concealed carry which holds up to 8 rounds (7+1) with the Pearce Grips PG-39 plus extension. I would much prefer this 10+1 .45 to a 10+1 9mm like the G48 (or G17 with a reduced capacity 10 round magazine). Nobody in their right mind would use a G21 if limited to 10 round magazines unless they had hands like Andre the Giant. The only true competition are pistols chambered for the .40 S&W round like the G22 and G27 which have much the same stopping power as the .45 GAP (both markedly better than 9mm), but as this high pressure round puts more stress on guns I prefer the .45 GAP. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.45_GAP www.hendonpub.com/resources/article_archive/results/details?id=3580 www.personaldefenseworld.com/2014/10/45-acp-and-45-gap-glocks/

    I had a G38 some years ago, it was a good gun but I did end up getting rid of it. To me, Glock made three mistakes with the .45 GAP: 1. The name - it's terrible. They should have called it ".450" something. The .45 GAP doesn't sound intimidating, it sounds more like a fashion statement. 2. Ballistics - more power sells and to make it equal to the ACP really meant there was nothing driving people to really want it. If they upped the pressure of it (think mini .45 Super/460 Rowland) and made it beat out even the .45 ACP +P by 50-100 fps...people would have stood up and taken notice. Recoil would be higher, but lower recoil options could have been offered for LEO and personal usage for those wanting less. 3. The fat slide - I know they made the slide thick to mitigate recoil but it also alienated all the holsters that previously worked with 9mm and .40 sized Glocks. A thin slide version (which did exist as a prototype) would have helped sales as well, and with the current Gen4/Gen5 dual recoil spring system, a thin slide version could have easily existed. That's just my .02.

    IMO they have a place but it's probably a narrow one. I like the pistol calibre ARs and quality ones are quite reliable. But they are almost the same size and weight as rifle calibre AR pistiols. So you have 9mm/.45 instead of 5.56/6.8/300 BO beacuase you chose it. I can see the apeal, lower recoil than rifle, more capacity than pistol, 4 points of contact for control, more rail for lights and stuff. If it makes sense to the user its a correct choice, but I would ask why not a 300 blackout AR pistol with brace.

Other than that, I love your videos man. You really swayed my opinion of the AR 15 format and how that the US Army Ordnance Corps is responsible for causing the firearms bad reputation through their collective incompetence. Which ultimately cost the lives of many young men in the jungles of South East Asia. BTW, Glock kinda of screw the pooch by not putting the G45 in 45ACP. Yeah i get it, 45 was the next in the patent numbing scheme. However, I feel it was kind of a missed opportunity for Glock.

    One of the reasons for making and adopting the G37 was for officers with small hands and for female officers . The G21 and even the G21SF is just too big . And during that time period law enforcement was recruiting more women . Now look at most law enforcement agencies and they are going to the 9mm because of less recoil . Times are changing .

  • @MyCatCarriesAGlock

    @MyCatCarriesAGlock

    Only reason the 21 has 13 is because the magazine is longer and wider. If you compare the 21 to other "full size" .45acps on the market, you'll notice a lot only hold 10 rounds as well-because the guns themselves are smaller sized and therefore so are the mags. So to relate that back to the 37, it's a G17-sized mag that holds .45 caliber cartridges. 10 is the best that physics will allow without the mag getting longer or wider. Hope that helps.

    I was very interested in the Glock 37 in.45 GAP but then realized i would be losing capacity to get a smaller grip which didn't matter to me. I think that is more of the reason that the gap didn't become successful than tradition. I would much rather have a Glock 20 than a Glock 37. The Glock 20 frame is larger(which matters little to me) and is more powerful, and has more capacity. The Glock 37 succeeded in offering .45acp performance in a smaller size, but that's all it did. The Glock 37 offered effeminate men and women the ability to grip and fire a .45 round, which is funny because small/weak men and women should not even be cops/military. So the .45 Glock is basically a thing that enables political correctness.....so fuck that thing.
