The 4 levels of climb-ups

Intro to climb-up strength & skill training (free blog post) → parkouredu.org/climb-up-intro...
What level are you at? Let me know with a comment below!
Over my past 8 yrs of training and teaching, I've found 4 distinct methods of climb-ups. Typically, people can't learn 1 level without first learning the ones that came before (due to lack of technique, strength, or both). Because of this, I teach different levels of climb-ups to different levels of practitioners. It is interesting to note the diminishing returns in speed for each level of climb-up. LVL 4 is only .1-.2 sec. faster than LVL 3, LVL 3 is about 2x faster than LVL 2, and LVL 2 can be 2-4x faster than LVL 1. See below for my classification of the 4 different levels.
LVL 1
- Go from cat hang to both feet up on top of the wall.
- Using knees, forearms, asymmetry, and everything is allowed.
- Getting up by any means possible is an accomplishment in itself!
LVL 2
- Go from cat hang to both feet up on top of the wall.
- You may only touch the wall with your hands and your feet (no knees, no forearms).
- The arms must be used symmetrically.
- The feet should plant on top of the wall at the same time.
- The entire climb up appears to be 3 separate moves (a pull up, a dip up, and a top out).
LVL 3
- Go from cat hang to both feet up on top of the wall.
- You may only touch the wall with your hands and your feet (no knees, no forearms).
- The arms must be used symmetrically.
- The feet should plant on top of the wall at the same time.
- The entire climb up appears to be 1 fluid motion.
LVL 4
- Go from cat hang to both feet up on top of the wall.
- You may only touch the wall with your hands and your feet (no knees, no forearms).
- The arms must be used symmetrically.
- The feet should plant on top of the wall at the same time.
- The entire climb up appears to be 1 fluid motion.
- The feet only touch 2 places on the wall (the original landing point and the top of the wall).

Somewhere between 1 & 2 at the moment, i'm trying to get the muscle strength and technique to progress to 3. I didn't realize that there was a way better than 3!

When I first started parkour, I noticed the vital technique of the climb ups right away. Of course you need good upper body strength. Besides pulling up and kicking up your legs at the same time, I HAVE TO EMPHASIZE the way you kick your leg AND your KNEE OUT AND UP! That's the most essential part. KICK YOUR KNEE OUT AND UP!!! Then you can do climb up as fast as Ryan!! :)

It's true that I only use 4 some of the time, and it is only barely faster than 3. But I've gotten it to the point now where I can do most easy to intermediate cat leaps with a 4. Over time it keeps getting better and better.

Great work on this thorough piece! The classifications seem very helpful not only for learners to break the moves down and analyse, but also as a trainer/coach this is very helpful for progressions. It is this kind of solid work that brings parkour coaching to the next level, so many thanks for your efforts :) I'm looking forward to other video's and I'll make sure to scout your channel. I saw you do the 30 muscleups for time once.. should've subbed back then ;) Cheers from the Netherlands!

This is so cool. I had just recently started noticing people using the muscle-up motion (level 3) and started working on it. I wish I had known about all the "levels" earlier, cause I would have kept working to improve them instead of stopping at level 2. Thanks for the video.

Used to be able to do level 3 consistently. Winter came, rain came, bills came, fell back down to level two. Working back up, though! :)
