The 4 KEY FACTORS in AFGHANISTAN'S COLLAPSE - VisualPolitik EN

Join the VisualPolitik community and support us on Patreon: / visualpolitik
In little more than 10 days the Republic of Afghanistan collapsed and the Taliban took power. The Taliban advance was so rapid that it put the very US forces that had the mission of commanding the evacuation up against the wall. At times the chaos was total.
After 20 years, thousands and thousands of lost lives and a cost of more than $2 trillion dollars, the United States was leaving Afghanistan in the worst possible way: running, in the midst of enormous chaos and with the feeling of having suffered a painful defeat.
But how could the Taliban seize power so quickly? How is it possible that the Afghan army in which the United States had invested tens of billions of dollars was dissolved like a sugar cube? What lies behind the debacle in Afghanistan? In this video we answer these and other questions so you can learn the truth behind the painful defeat of the US in Afghanistan.
This video is the first chapter of a trilogy in which we hope to help you understand everything that has happened and know what the future may now hold for Afghanistan.

The biggest failure was to deal with the endemic corruption at all levels of Afghan society. Western powers basically gave the central government a blank cheque without major oversight or accountability. The results speak for themselves. Afghan National Police units would often give tip offs to the Taliban about ISAF operations and so would the ANA-it was less prevalent with them due to them being from different tribal areas to where they were posted. To compound the situation, the Taliban offered better pay to join their ranks. The entire thing was a colossal joke.

Three years ago, AP published an interview with a former Afghan warlord who fought off the Soviet invader, and a Russian expert on Afghanistan. The Afghan, though seriously injured by the Russians in the battle, praised that the Soviet at least gave Afghanistan a decent hospital, and the communist Afghan government was at least not corrupt. Whilst the American occupation has given Afghanistan nothing. And the "democratic" Afghan government was corrupted to the core. The Russian expert said something that in a hindsight sounds like a prophecy. Your $80 billion US dollar estimate of what we spent on training and readying the Afghan army was the lowest of two that I've heard, but the amount it would supposedly cost to give everyone a free college eduction in the US was only $60 billion US dollars. Seems like whatever the amount was, it was sand pounded down a rathole, as the colourful English colloquialism puts it.

I once read a quote in a book about the initial US invasion of Afghanistan by one of the Special Forces soldiers who protected Hamid Karzai in the beginning, which said "You can rent the loyalty of an Afghan politician or warlord, but you can never buy it." The collapse of the Afghan government was a perfect example of that. Political corruption is so ingrained in their identity that the only thing you can ever 100% trust an Afghan with any power to do is that when it comes down to it, the only thing they're loyal to is themselves. Not their country, not their people, hell not even their families a lot of the time. It was in their best interests to inflate their military numbers and capabilities, because it meant more money from the US. Their military was actually less than 1/3 of what it was on paper and the majority of the money of supplies meant for the actual soldiers fighting was being kept and sold by their commanders and then once it came down to them doing their own fighting, the commanders either switched sides or fled while the soldiers were left with no command and no supplies, especially ammo. We the US keep making the mistake in assuming everybody wants our way of life and government and that's just not the case. Especially in the Middle East and Southwest Asia.

Afghan (and Iraqi) troops that regularly worked with the US troops were some of the most motived troops available. For one thing, they got paid. The commanders wouldnot want to offend the US commanders. It would look bad. There were plenty other places to embezzle. But probably the most important is that US troops treated the Afghan soldiers like soldiers, not a source of income (through embezzlement). They got training, tehy got respect, they got self esteem. Of course, such units were rare. If there were a lot, it woudl cut to deeply into the "income" of Afghan commanders and politicians. I knew it was going to be really bad when teh US held national elections and turned everything over to the new Afghan government. Afghanistan wasno where near ready for democracy, especially US style democracy. And since the US was no longer "occupying" (in the legal sense) Afghanistan, the US could not simply jail or execute officers and politicians that were embezzling. All legal matters had to go through the Afghan government.

Good video but I dont think that the primary reason taliban didnt take over the runway was the will to govern. The primary reason was that this was a very public and televised event. You dont shoot down an American evacuation plane and get away with it. That kind of thing would horrify, not only the American public, but entire western world as well. That kind of act would put the US governemnt in a position where they must act and they couldnt say "the taliban have changed" as they can now. Americans would show up in force this time with so much men and material that they would revamp the landscape of the bloody country. And have more allies than earlier, too.
