The Criteria of Canonization After persecution subsided and the church as a whole was able to publicly gather in the fourth century, they were able to land on an authoritative list of inspired books that comprised the New Testament. The early Christians recognized as authoritative those books that met three key criteria:[6] The authoritative book had to be written by apostolic authors (or authors who were closely associated with apostles). They taught the orthodox faith of the apostles. not the orthodox denomination. They had been widely accepted in earliest churches from the beginning. In order for the church at large to recognize what books had already long been accepted as authoritative by the churches, it measured the books by these standards. Recall the literal meaning of the word “canon” as “measuring stick.”

Studying early church fathers, seeing how they weighed scripture against authoritative church teaching and continuity, shows how out of place any notion of "sola scriptura" would be. Feel free to reach out to the Coming Home Network when you're ready, my friend. Ignatius of Antioch is a great very early church father to read.👍 “You must follow the bishop as Jesus Christ follows the Father, and the presbytery as you would the Apostles. Reverence the deacons as you would the command of God. Let no one do anything of concern to the Church without the bishop. Let that be considered a valid Eucharist which is celebrated by the bishop, or by one whom he appoints. Wherever the bishop appears, let the people be there, just as wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church.” -St. Ignatius of Antioch Letter to the Smyrnaeans, 8:1-2, AD 107

Revelation of Peter is worth the read. How anyone can reject Wisdom of Solomon is odd. Many early church leaders quote it as scripture. Was it ever disputed in the early church before Jerome?

In other words, canonicity is directly tied to the ecclesiology of the early Church. The canon of the Bible was not revealed on golden plates or by direct inspiration, but by the tradition of the Church. ☦️
