Two best points about this segment are: 1) The origin behind the three section staff feels believable and natural. 2) The opponent is not a villainous figure. He may be an antagonist, but he's genuinely just doing his job, wants the best for San Te and treats him politely and respectfully as a junior or an equal in defeat or victory. So many examples of modern media fail in this, so it's important to acknowledge what this movie does so well. BRAVO

@@Vangror You don't seem to understand what the word antagonist means. It is a label for movie terminology. The role of the antagonist is to be an obstacle before the protagonist in his pursuit of a specific goal. It is not correlated to alignments/morality. A protagonist is simply the character that the story follows, and the main perspective that is conveyed to readers/watchers. A protagonist can be morally defunct, perhaps evil by our standards, and the story will still follow his track. Tony Soprano is an example of an amoral protagonist. At the same time, an antagonist could be someone who harbors good will. Not all stories are about a great hero's journey and justice. Not all stories follow a black & white formula of Benevolence and Malice. This is generally for anyone with this misconception. The point is, it is the objective thing to call that character an antagonist. At the same time, he is the protagonist's "friendly rival".

I don’t think it was a rivalry. I think the older monk really wanted to push San Te to his limits to see how he would function in a stand up fight. He was proud when San Te finally held his own.

I love the philosophy of how he created the staff. He basically started using the spear with one hand since it frees up his other. And he just reacts without thinking, naturally letting his body do what it does and thus leading to the creation of a staff with even more versatility.

  • @xSuperiorManx

I always thought that he created the Sansetsukon by pure chance. While training the the garden, he accidentally struck the bamboo trunk and it hit him, where a solid, one-piece weapon like the Bo staff would have been blocked because the staff has no joints. While trying to get out from unter the bamboo he stems the trunk up with his weapon, thus creating another "joint" and the bamboo piece hits him again. So the protagonist realizes that a "flexible staff" or multi-jointed weapon would be able to hit his enemy "around" any guard the opponent could throw up against it and so he decides to craft a fitting weapon.

I think this sequence alone showed me what made Lau Kar Leung so different as a filmmaker. So many films of the time depicted the growth of a martial artist as a one way street. Start weak-> work hard at martial arts -> become strong. It's a satisfying format, but shallow. What makes this (and other LKL) films different is that he really simply shows the mental evolution that takes place as well. Here we see considered trial-and-error. San Te tries new things, and we see the logic behind why he tries them, but then he fails. It's not simply about working hard, but about evolving your thinking, discarding what doesn't work, and developing the creativity and bravery to experiment.

What I love about this is they're fighting because San Te learned too fast. and the teacher was like, "Hol up! Nah! This isn't just about learning the forms, show me you know what to do!" The traditional way would be to up your skill in any weapon, and think of a counter to his butterfly swords with that weapon. San Te's too quick though! He already got the skills, all he could do is increase his speed so he can't be countered! But nah, he had to have a big brain moment with that bamboo. This invention of the 3 section staff is like Tony Stark getting outta the cave!

It’s a good thing he fought the Senior Monk three times before he fought General Tien or he would have been killed. San Te kept practicing and learned counter moves to senior monks sword style. It wasn’t until he asked the senior monk “teacher, are you alright” did he learn how to defeat him. The teacher’s answer “ I’m alright I still have my sword”. When San te took the sword away he became the Master Killer. He easily beat General Tien in the final fight.

The reasons why the master was able to defeat him the first two times is good footwork and closing the distance. Once he got inside, San Te's weapons were useless because they lacked flexibility. Once he created the 3-sectional staff, the whole thing changed. He now had a long and short distanced weapon. Where this is nicely illustrated is when the master chops and San The blocks with the middle staff. Personally, I think that first chop is a decoy so the master can close the distance. Once inside, the real attack comes, but San Te counters that by lowering a staff section with his right hand. If he had a regular staff, he wouldn't have been able to make that counter block. Whatever option he chose from there would either caused him to lose the staff or make himself vulnerable.

A real monk staff, blades on both ends is about 10 pounds. Real metal on each end is about 2 to 3 pounds. The main actor must have struggled to make the scene look good from 2:00 to 2:30. That is the last tool, weapon choice. Too heavy. Michelle Yeoh tried it in Crouching Tiger.

I actually fought someone with a three sections staff several years ago. I was leaving my kung Fu studio and three black gentlemen tried robbing me in broad daylight. I didn't have my nunchucka on me but I had my three section staff handy. Luckily I defeated him them soundly without incident. Unless someone has a gun basically they cannot beat me. I have fought masters who also used three section staffs and I have defeated them in multi national tournaments.
