The 30 Best Commodore Amiga CD32 Games Ever Made!

Ойындар

Hey whatsup guys OSG back with another 30 best games video and it’s actually one I haven’t covered before. The amiga CD32 was the system that many people associate with Commodores demise and it is true that it was the swan song from the company but was it so bad that it bankrupt the company? I think that the company was already on the skids and this system gets a bad rap when ultimately the fault lied with bad management which resulted in the system not being able to be released in the United States Anyway there were around 155 games including cover disks etc. and I’ve been playing them all…so Gareth Braint (who incidentally asked me to do this video ages ago) you can stop hounding me in the comments because here we have what I would say are the 30 best Amiga CD32 games ever made in order of greatness.

Man I dreamed about getting a CD32 as a kid but my A500+ didn't disappoint! All my friends had consoles like the megadrive and snes but me with my Amiga I thought was superior. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. It's been about 25 years since I played my Amiga and I'm slowly remembering and looking up the great games from my collection. Yes it was vastly underpowered for a "Next Gen" system. As good as CD32 was, It was on the same level as the Sega Mega CD. And even that had superior sprite scaling. Calling the CD32 a Playstation competitor was literally like calling the Mega CD a rival to the Playstation. Even the 32X had vastly superior 3D, let alone the PS1.

@alexojideagu the mega cd was the only one with sprite scaling in fact. megasrive, snes and amiga couldn't do it. snes could scale backgrounds but not sprites. neo geo could but that was arcade hardware

@@mr.y.mysterious.video1 It works well on Batman on the Mega CD. I think the SFX2 chip enabled sprite scaling on Yoshi's Island, but yeh it didn't have hardware sprite scaling without extra chips. Also I read the Neo Geo could only shrink sprites, not inflate them.

Problem with the cd32 was that the PlayStation and Saturn were just around the corner and we're leaps and bounds more powerful. The 3DO is out but it was $400 more expensive. Still if you just had to have a CD the Sega CD could be had for around $50 cheaper after including the cost of the base unit. Commodore just wasn't spending enough on r&d. Either because they didn't have it or because they thought they could just repackage older hardware.

This is why the CD32 was a nail to the coffin. Almost all games weren't even enhanced for the hardware. They were just A500 floppy games stuffed on CD with added intro or CD Audio music. The Lost Vikings didn't get the backgrounds known from other ports. Also CD medium could fit plenty of games, so they could be released as bundles with like 10 games from the same studio. This really shows the greed and how C= was turned into mess.

And Elite frontier was so bugged i actually wrote a letter of complaint to Gametek, i think it was. Many Amiga CD32 games were direct ports from the Amiga 1200 that only used one button. The system was underpowered and the catalog didn't have exclusives with enough weight to be a must-buy. The console was expensive and its lifespan was short. Even if Commodore had survived, it wouldn't have stood a chance against the PSX, Saturn, or N64.

Mostly it's the controls that were underutilized but then again the Amiga joystick pinout was already expanded over the C64 yet never seemed to get past one button. O_o??? Nice to see some Jump button conversions but yeah if any genre could use all those buttons it would be the fighting genre. ;) I definitely think voice tracks was something CD-ROMs handled well, even better than FMV in most cases. Much like a CD soundtrack there was probably little to no budget to add anything new to most ports to use all that storage space. :\

Always thought it was just used by developers to make a quick quid on games they’d already made. Whack some CD quality sound on them and send them back out. I could be wrong, as I only ever played one back in the day, very briefly, but even then, saw it as a pointless system. Maybe if it’d had a longer life, developers would have come up with some impressive new games.

I often wonder what the CD32 could have been capable of in the visuals and graphics department. I know AGA was only a minor evolution step over ECS, although m ore noticeable if you can see the same game side by side in both format. But the CD32 must have been capable of more than what the older ported games offered up in this regard. I know it likely could not have matched the PS1, but how could it have compared to the Sega x32 or Dreamcast?
