When I was doing jiu jitsu in the army, a former d1 wrestling coach joined the class one, and our black belt worked it out with him that wensdays would be wrestling days. It had a huge impact on my style. Never was a wrestler but to this day people still ask me if I wrestled in high-school or college. I think we need more of it.

When I trained a little BJJ (I am a kickboxer and was dragged into it), I always liked rolling with wrestlers because unlike white belts, they had control and they would teach me a lot during a roll. They especially taught me how to hate being side position (fuckkkkk) but i ended up learning the inverted triangle from that position. The wrestlers taught me fundamentals that I can still use today in my Thai kickboxing.

Wrestlers will try and get back up, Judo guys may just stay down and be extremely defensive but not doing anything. If you do BJJ but its ALWAYS on your knees or pulling guard, youre doing it wrong.

Yeah that's dumb. I watched a Jui Jitsu tournament once... wait he won? He was on the bottom the entire time and didn't get a submission or even close to one. What the hell is this crap? MMA is kind of weird for me to watch. I'm not a fighter but i got into some scraps as a kid. It's weird to see for the first time MMA fighters do things that i had figured out as a kid. Damn, i had some pretty good techniques. I didn't give myself enough credit. Plus i know things that i don't know that i know. I would get so angry that i'd black out and i don't consciously remember most of the fights. But if i get angry or scared enough the muscle memory comes back out of nowhere. It's weird. Like i was a few years older and past the angry blackout phase and this bigger kid throws a roundhouse kick at me and i just automatically caught it. I guess that's something i know how to do? But all there was when i was growing up was boxing and i never saw anybody fight like i did until MMA. Especially Conor McGregor, the way he moves and throws counters that's exactly what i would do. I was crazy. I would just stand in front of people move my head when they threw punches and counter. Not that i was good, i lost fights but it was never technique. I got way too emotional. My technique was awesome. What i've learned about blacking out and other forms of memory (like dreams) that you have 'lost' is that they're not gone. You just can't access them because you are not in the same state of mind. Right before i fall asleep i can remember a lot of dreams that i've had in the past. And inside my dreams. I remember other dreams that i'd had previously. I bet if i got the right level of drunk i could remember the times i blacked out. I don't want to do that.

Thank God someone prominent has brought this up. I train MMA, so often we roll. I get frustrated at people pulling guard because that's not a good game plan in MMA. It detracts from the proper ways of training. I also, being a wrestler, almost always end up in top position. So my bottom game is lacking. I specifically have to ask for bottom position in my gym to try to work on my defense. As far as leg locks, when I went to a BJJ gym they wouldn't let me learn them. Now in MMA I have to be careful guys don't put me in them. So I need to learn them. Another hole in my game created by traditional BJJ.

Today, you can go from white to black belt in BJJ with zero takedown knowledge or proficiency. That was not the case 20 years ago (albeit the takedowns were still somewhat weak in BJJ back then). Today, many people are happy to pull guard and get to bottom position straight away. It's not just a gentleman's agreement, it's that bottom position is actively coveted by so so many people in BJJ today at the expense of top position. BJJ is evolving but much of the BJJ community kind of has it's head up it's ass sometimes about these evolutions. These evolutions are becoming far too insular, with no consideration of MMA or the context of an actual fight. Some are aware of this but don't care. Many others though seem to be in this weird cultish frenzy where they see BJJ as this infallible god to be worshiped, and despite the fact the "martial" aspect of BJJ is eroding right in front of people's eyes, many people are acting as though this isn't happening.

This makes me appreciate the fact that I started out with a Japanese Jiu Jitsu base. Although my dojo wasn’t strictly JJJ in the traditional sense, it did incorporate a lot more throws and takedowns into the curriculum. I used to hate working on throws because I would always leave banged up. Now that I’m at a BJJ studio I find that my takedowns are on a different level compared to my training partners. I can really see the difference between the styles, and I can see how this is a giant hole in BJJ.

Also wrestlers are some of the fittest athletes on the planet and can keep up with the high fitness demands of a 3-5x5min round MMA fight. Folkstyle wrestling may be a big help if it were widely practiced/implemented more. It's unfortunate that this style of wrestling, which has such a huge emphasis on ground control (i.e. riding time) is capped out, in terms of competition, at the college level. There are no "folkstyle dojos" to where this art can continue to be practiced, and I hope to change that someday.

As it stands wrestling and I mean stuffing the shit out guys is more effective then giving up space to attempt a submission. @DrMathOfficial

@NK See, you're allowing yourself to be illogical, brainwashed, and a BJJ GROUPIE, and it's going to get you SEVERELY hurt or killed. #1- I never said a "striker" (which in itself shows that you and others don't have a clue, because a "striker" and "somehow who actually knows how to FIGHT, standing up" are 2 COMPLETELY different things. "strikers" (people who DON'T know how to really fight, but have learned a few basics about throwing punches and kicks), are what you see in 99% of MMA fighters/ fights. Then there's maybe the 1% who actually know how to fight, and THEY are the elite, superstar names.....and even among the super star names of people you THINK can fight, aren't really that good, they just look(ed) good because they're fighting opponents who are of low level. Conor MacGregor is a prime example. And what happened when he went and fought or sparred with REAL boxers? He got his ass BEAT, and he was fighting much smaller boxers at that. Imagine if it were boxers that were a little bigger or even his size. They would've killed his ass. #2- I never said that in THIS day and age, someone who only knows how to FIGHT standing up, with no knowledge or grappling or at least grappling defense, will be able to do well, they won't. But with that said, if someone knows how to really fight (standing up), they only need BASIC takedown defense, and BASIC knowledge of BJJ (blow job jitsu) defense and then you can easily dominate and KILL them if you desire to. #3- UFC from the very beginning, regarding BJJ, was a propaganda CON/ FRAUD, deliberaly orchestrated to promote BJJ. This is now a known fact, you had better research it. They orchestrated all kinds of matches to make BJJ look good and come out on top. Research it. Furthermore, even in those times, ALL of the fighters were of extremely low quality when it comes to Stand up/ real fighting. You saw no real boxers fighting in there (by the way, a real boxer, or even a naturally talented and gifted Street fighter, even if they have ZERO grappling knowledge, they can still knock you out before you even get a chance to try and tackle them/ perform a takedown, let alone one who also knows takedown defense and basic BJJ defense). The vast majority that participated in the UFC's were White (no offense) bar room brawler kinds of people (aka ZERO athleticism or talent), wrestlers, and some Traditional Martial Artists (which we now know, the vast majority of them do not work well with real fighting in the modern world). BUT, because BJJ and that style of "fighting" was never even known to EXIST by the American world, that was why they somewhat dominated the very very early UFC's. simply because no one knew it existed, to even think about defending against it. News flash, that was DECADES ago my friend. Everyone knows about BJJ now, especially fighters who actually train to fight. So that edge is now GONE. And that's also seen in the climate of MMA now. BJJ and it's fighters GET dominated now, they do ZERO dominating. The ones who know how to actually fight (standing up), THEY are the ones dominating now, since they learned BJJ, basic bjj technies and takedown defense. Below them are the wrestlers, who rely on wrestling for takedowns and then rely on their ground and pound and few submissions (like the Kabib and Khamzat types of fighters). The short "reign" of BJJ is OVER my friend. And it's getting even worse now with the more and more it becomes "BJJ"/ the more and more it goes away from being Gracie Juijitsu (which itself was super weak PERVERSION of real "juititsu", aka JAPANESE JUJUTSU and Judo. The more it goes into the BJJ direction, with the techniques and approaches to fighting that will get you KILLED, the worse it gets. All while, the BJJ CULT members/ groupies are also getting worse, instead of seeing what's happening and waking up. So again and for the last time I will tell you, wake up from this, before it gets you severely hurt or killed.

If you cannot submit somebody when you are on top position during 4 minutes, then think about why you could not do it. I've always thought that if you're going to call Jiu-Jitsu matches "fights" the least you can do is introduce a realistic element of fighting or at least grappling which is the ability to pick somebody up and slam them. (within reasonable saftey) This kind of idea really upsets jiu jitsu purists because it effectively nullifies so many of their techniques.

  • @nikogdatakogo

realistic approach is simply not trainable and teachable. There always be limits so you can practice the certain things. For example, you cannot teach a wrestler to wrestle if you allow them to continue grappling while one of them succesfully pinned another one. The focus of their training will immediately shift towards the thing there are not supposed to train wasting time and energy. You cannot allow kickboxer to wrestle or grapple therefore there is no reason to ask a jiu jitsu guy to strike his opponent. In order to make yourself as a fighter more complete you have to train in other styles. I don't know add some private sessions to your schedule so you obtain at least some skill in striking or judo. Whatever you need or feel you lack.

I guess there should be a practice of implementing the most high percentage takedowns and developing basic takedown defence. The full incorporation of wrestling aspect - which is HUGE - will immediately affect the ground aspect, because time is limited. I guess sambo is a great example of that. It is more complete if you look at it as a grappling art. But the ground game is more limited compared to bjj (they don't have chokes for example). Wrestling part is not as profound as free style. It takes things from judo while not being a judo. So it is a great sport, no doubt, but it shows you that there are should be limits.

Hey guys I turn 28 on June 6th and I'm going to start training for combat sports again starting on June 1st, I'm going to be training under a 5th degree BJJ black belt who studied under the Machado's. BJJ, wrestling and Dutch style kickboxing. I've let myself get out of shape since getting out of the army and I've had some injuries including getting hit by a Jeep and a crosswalk. I need to lose a bunch of weight and getting much better shape, but I've got my 7-year-old son and he's going to be on this journey with me, wish me luck brothers

Get after it, brother. You'll be fine. Honestly though, for your situation, I would personally recommend starting with Yoga even before martial arts. It's great for blood circulation, and serves as a healing therapy for injuries. It'll also strengthen your core which will help. I'd then ease into BJJ to skyrocket your weight loss and really get you into shape. BJJ is great because you can roll gently until you're comfortable. Then months to a few years after I'd get into the harder, higher impact martial arts like wrestling, boxing, Sambo.

My old catch wrestling coach Billy Wicks taught a style of wrestling that emphasized more "riding" style after a takedown. He would go crazy if you didn't advance a takedown into dominant position before they could pull guard or get up. He did integrate some Greco into a more balance wrestling style into this also. Great podcast! I think Khabib is the best at it hands down but Couture was really good also.

I believe old school jiu-jitsu players were better able to impose or maintain top position, but the philosophy of the old school players was different. Their philosophy was to hold side control and wear their opponents out by making them try to escape, then when the opponent was tired they would mount and finish the opponent. Obviously in todays mma with 5 minute rounds and referees who will stand a fighter up if he is "stalling" you don't see the old school position before submission, wear them out jiu-jitsu. Todays mma philosophy is to always be moving and this makes for less control when the top guy is trying to make something happen.

old jiu jitsu unlike competetive bjj acknowledged the striking aspect. So even if they pull guard that guard was supposed to GUARD your head from striking, constantly breaking posture of your opponent limiting him from throwing fists. That guard has nothing to do with sitting on your ass and waiting for a move to counter.

As a wrestler who now does Jiu Jitsu, even with only 6 months of experience, I have noticed those 2 later deficiencies myself. Perhaps a rule change in the point system of tournaments to more greatly punish taking the guard position unnecissarily or more greatly reward escapes could fix the issue of expecting your opponent to accept your guard position. You maybe also add a component like they did in college wrestling were you score a point for maintaining a top position for a long period of time. This could be applied even if you have your opponent in your guard, incentivising top positional dominance. If youre on your butt, the clock is against you. Just a thought. Ill leave it to others who know more than me though.

You should check out *(CACC) Catch Wrestling* and its history. It's submission wrestling and is the Father of folk & freestyle wrestling. It's wrestling BEFORE the submission holds were taken out. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was influenced by CACC as Mitsuyo Maeda (Judoka), who taught the Gracies, learned Catch Wrestling in England and then taught a lot of those techniques to the Gracies.

Interesting. The way I see it, BJJ's holes make sense becuase it's an inherently incomplete art. It exploits the gaping hole of every other grappling art; the ground submission game, but it systematically lacks the context of the ground game; how you get there from standing, and what do you want to do when you're there. But when you add Judo (for gi) or wrestling (no gi), that context in empatically imposed on whats happening on the ground

  • @internetenjoyer1044

    @internetenjoyer1044

    2 жыл бұрын

@William Boyce Well, yeah, and thats a hole of my theory, becuase bjj doesn't value pins for the own sake, it's all for submissions, so maybe bjj is in fact incomplete, and needs to be completed by its own conception of how and why the ground game happens and is so prevalent. By "what you want to do there", i was more thinking about why the guard meta is the way it is, and why you want to play a top/bottom position game, whereas in Judo and Wrestling you always want to have top position

If you have some size on you, and you want your shirt to be loose, the larger size doesn't fit you for sleeves or length of torso, if your so jacked to the point that it isn't an option. Sure buy a shirt that is baggy and looks dumb. If not your shirt being slightly tight is actually something that is borderline unavoidable.
