Got into safety razors about two months ago, always shaved with cartridge. Bought the Supply razor and couldn't get used to it, kept cutting myself while not having as close a shave as I wanted. Followed Brian's advice and purchased the Timor. I can truly say I had the best self-shave of my life. Thank you Brian !

Great video and recommendations. For any grip problems every beginner should have an alum block for the post shave. The alum block will also help you grip anything with wet fingers during the shave process, it really is amazing. Just wet the alum block or your fingers then rub them on the alum block.

The first safety razor I ever purchased, from Executive Shaving of course, was the Merkur 'Barber Pole' model - It's quite mild I think and I enjoyed starting out with it; great for big hands (long, thick handle), nice weight at 120g (no manual pressure required at all really), looks good, well made, and a good price.

I just finished my first shave using the Timor 1325 - the stainless steel long handle version of the Timor Pure Shaver seen in this video. It's slightly more expensive but well worth the extra cost (45 euros vs 60 euros). The build quality is superb! The razor provides a close and absolutely nick free shave in about 3-4 passes. The long handle is well weighted and knurled. You get a very good grip and you just allow the weight to do the work by gently gliding it along your skin. And it looks gorgeous! Makes you want to shave every time you get into your bathroom :) Pair it with the Personna Platinum blades, another a spot on recommendation by the good folks at ESC and some of their lovely Natural shaving cream & Pre Shave oil and you are all set for the shave of your life ! I bought the Timor from you guys last year. BEST PURCHASE EVER! There are these zero waste companies who have no experience in making safety razors and it really turns people off buying them. I think you need to make the Timor a star and get it recommended by zero waste influencers to beginners in the zero waste world! Your products are high quality and the customer service was excellent! i personally like the Murker style safety razors where you can turn the dial to increase or decrease the travel of the head. You can get a knockoff for real cheap (i paid $20 about 6 years ago) and it's so versitile for even longer hair and on the #1 setting it gives the closest shave i've ever gotten from a razor. That 1 razor because it's adjustable can do the job of 6 at a fixed setting. For me it was a no brainer

My first and only safety razor is the Feather stainless steel razor. Expensive but totally worth the money. A feather razor and blade + Proraso products have given me the best shaves of my life, and I wish I’d tried safety razors 20 years ago.

Just bought a feather "popular" razor for $19 Canadian after watching your video on how to use these razors for beginners! It may have plastic and have a slight rattle but feels like such a well build product that's made in japan. My neck had some pretty bad razor burn and I often grew a beard just because I hated shaving over it but I've been using this razor for a bit over a week now and I'm starting to get a quicker shave with this cause it doesn't clog up as much as the multiblade razors. It also just glides over bumps very well, this made shaving something I enjoy instead of a painful chore. I'm just using a cheap can of foamy Gillette might grab a brush and some nicer cream when I use up my supply but I'll definitely keep a can handy for a quick shave.

If anything.....at least try some good shaving cream. I use Nivea Men shaving gel with Zero alcohol. For an extra 1$ or so, very much worth it :)

very nice video and always an interesting topic. and then, you also have the double open comb razors which act completely different in my experience. they can be very very mild, or quite efficient. i do find those pretty good at buffing because of the ‘lather channels’. So shorter strokes work really well with those for me. But I agree on the more scratchy feeling, depending on what razor ofcourse. When I haven’t shaved for some days I tend to go for a DOC or open comb. But ofcourse a closed comb will do fine too. The great thing about having so much choice: everyone can pick what they like and nothing is wrong as long as it works for you! :)

That Timor looks great. harder to get in the US. I like the handle size: 3.15" (inches) / 80mm, since I tend to put my pinky finger at the bottom end of the handle. Some experienced safety razor shavers say that using a mild razor with a sharp blade is very effective. That seems to be exactly what you combined with those razors paired with Personna blades. Thanks for the lesson.

I purchased the R106 after watching this. I would say the handle is a little too short, but it is overall an excellent product. Gentle on the face, I’ve yet to nick myself with it, and have now purchased two more, one for travel, and one for my weekend home. Until now it’s been Wilkinson Sword for me, not any longer. Do you recommend a brand of blades for specifically shaving your head, I’m finding the personna platinum chrome to be good on my face but not getting a close enough shave on my head. I have a full head of hair so my stubble might be too course for these blades?

You're right, the replacement blades are way cheaper compared to cartridge blades, moreover, this way of shaving is better for your skin and the planet (the blades can be recycled). Thanks for watching. Brian

I love the Parker Razors because of the weight and knurling on the handles. The Parker 56r is my favorite sofar. It's mild and very effective.

@@ExecutiveShaving I said the 56r not the 65r. The 56r came out a year ago actually it's fairly new. With the 56r I can do a three shave pass and have zero irritation. Comparing that to say my 74r which is more on the aggressive side which I can do two passes and accomplish the same results as the 56r.

Firstly, thanks for doing these videos. Greatly appreciated. I’ve decided to make the switch from cartridges to a safety razor. I have a fully grown beard and shave minimal parts of my face and neck. I like clean lines on my beard, and currently when I shave, I have to go in multiple directions both with and against the grain to achieve this. How difficult is this to do with a safety razor? Any tips before I attempt my lines and end up mutilating my face? Thanks so much for your time!

The Timor would be the best option for you as the low-profile head has really good sightlines allowing you to get right up the edge of your beard lines easily. You will not have to do multiple passes, do one pass in the direction your hair grows in and one against the grain (the opposite direction). Take your time, apply light pressure only, shave with a sharp blade on a rich lather and you will be absolutely fine. Thanks for watching. Brian

I'm very clean and all my grooming tools are stainless steel and easy to clean, i.e. disassembles with no hidden parts, so I can scrub ALL parts with bleach. Can you recommend a safety razor like that?

I think the Fatip Testina Gentile is the best for a beginner. It’s better than the DE89 and made of brass. I’m an aggressive open comb man but I love the Gentile. Super efficient and a better shaver than the DE89!

Interesting!- For me, the best razor of choice is the Gillette/Rotbart Slim Twist. I always go back to the Slim Twist. It has a long, easy to hold handle, it easy to use and gives a good result.

Good classic choices. Put a feather blade in them and they become more advanced (aggressive).

I just started using a safety razor last week and have pretty sensitive skin, If you can find a good sampler pack that might be a good idea as you can find what blades agree with you and then you can order a bulk package cheap, personally I lucked out just bought a 100 pack of derbys and I liked them. They give me a nice pain free shave and went over my razer bumps/acne no problem. I tried a feather blade today and it gave me a very nice shave without irritation. They're definitely a good bit sharper then the derby's causing me to nick myself a couple times. I might buy some more feathers and try and master them, the way I see it if I can get a good shave with some of the sharpest blades I can work on getting the best technique with my razor

Wich blades are best with merkur 34c? Im interested in feather but im a beginner and 17 years old. As the 34c has a closed comb i thought the feather blades would be good for my sensitive skin and I also have to do less passes for a close shave. I'd love to hear from you, Carlo

Amazing video, as always. Do you happen to sell a beginners kit that includes everything I would need to start wet shaving? A kit that includes the razor, extra blades, shave soap, pre shave oil, brush, bowl, etc.? I bought a kit from a department store but I'm unimpressed with the quality. I noticed first that when I was stirring up the shave soap with the boar hair brush that the brush was spinning around inside the handle, making it extremely difficult to get a good lather going. Only tried wet shaving the one time, wasn't the best experience, but I accept the blame on it for not doing my homework and purchasing higher quality products. The razor itself is probably decent, but the replacement double edge blades weren't high quality, very unimpressed with the brush, and the soap I don't believe was anything like what I have seen you use in other videos. Was hard to remove just a small piece to put in the bowl, was basically like a round bar of soap and had to cut pieces of it with a kitchen knife. Definitely want to give it another go but this time with the right shaving supplies.

I've watched the tutorial about 7 or 8 times now, just have to get the proper product and I'm confident my second try with wet shaving will be a much better experience

Just bought the Timor. I had bought the Merkur Futur as a beginner's razor. My mistake. It's night and day difference. Timor allows you to get crafty with this type of shaving because it's way lighter. Futur is for a Beast Expert.

Doesn't look like it exists in the Timor catalog in the form shown in this video: the handle knurling looks like what they have on their butterfly variants but the head is a traditional 2-piece and not a butterfly. Maybe they just started making the detachable handles like this more recently and haven't updated their catalog. Could be a 1350/1351 or a 1325 with updated handle. (What you're looking for is the company Giesen & Forsthoff, by the way, and Timor is just one of their brands.)

What about the Razorock Game Changer 84-P? Or the Rockwell 6c? Or the Razorock Lupo?

Exactly? What about them? Rockwell - made in China and issues with quality and often availability. These three razors are in my opinion, best for a beginner. Thanks for watching. Brian

@@ExecutiveShaving Hmm. Good point there. Plus the head on the Rockwell is a little clunky. Still a great beginner razor though. But what about the Karve or the Game Changer 84-P with the barber pole handle? Such a great razor! And you've just got to try the Lupo which is based off the Wolfman WR1. It's basically an affordable easier to get version of the Wolfman. Both great razors for beginners and veterans alike. There are many other great razors but they're all over $100 so I can't really recommend them for beginners. For what it's worth I've always wanted to try the razor's you are recommending as well. Nick Shaves swears by the Merkur 34C. But I've never tried one. And those Muhle razors sure are pretty.

Is the R106 head-heavy and does the handle have a knurling on it ?

We find the R106 is perfectly balanced - it weighs approx 65g. There is no knurling on the handle. However, it has a non-slip treatment to ensure a firm grip when shaving.

Which one is the best for sensitive skin?

Is the head of the r89 the same as the r106? If not what is the difference in shaving?

I bought the Timor and can’t get a close shave whatever technique I use, I’ve tried several different blades as well. Have I bought the wrong one for me?

Hello, the Timor Razor is curently sold out on the website. Can you please tell me which model is so i can order it from somwhere else? Is it hte Timor G&F 1352 or Timor G&F 1353. I cant tell the difference.

I find those Personna blades to be extremely finicky - they work great in some razors and are absolutely unusable in others. Just my 2 cents.

The Personna Israeli Red is the best for me! I also like Dorco, Shark, Astra, Lord.

I'm on the lookout for a safety razor with some weight to it. I'm a beginner. Any suggestions guys?

What about wilkinson sword premium collection? its 20 bucks and seems good also im just 17 and need somerhing very safe because i can barely use a curtage razor withouth cutting myself

We don't stock Wilkinson Sword razors, just blades! The Muhle R89 would be a good option for you starting out with a safety razor - it's a mild yet effective razor. Try pairing it with a Personna or Tiger blade and just take your time while you learn how to properly use a safety razor! How many time you change the blade? every shave or two time to three?

It depends on a lot of different factors including how heavy your growth is, how often you shave etc but you should get around 3 good shaves from each blade.

I shave with a rusty butcher knife from world war 2. highly recommend for more advanced shavers if youre seeking a challenge
