Open Comb Vs Closed Comb Safety Razor | Differences Explained

Ойын-сауық

In today's video, we look at the differences between Open Comb and Closed Comb Double Edge Safety Razors.
Open Comb Double Edged Safety Razors:
In contrast to the closed comb safety razor, the open comb double edged safety razor has a different design of razor head. Instead of the straight bar the open comb has a row of teeth that run underneath the razor blade. These teeth help to guide and position the hairs of the beard closer to the razor blade, so they can be cut more effectively without clogging up the razor.
An open comb safety razor generally tends to be slightly more aggressive than a closed comb razor. Although more razor blade is exposed by the teeth in the open comb head, these teeth also allow much more shaving lather to enter the cutting area to lubricate and protect your skin. One benefit of the open comb razor is that because they shave closer you need fewer passes across your face to get e really close shave. Fewer passes equals less irritation to your skin. Another benefit is for guys who shave only once in a while, weekly or less. The open comb construction allows shaving debris, bristles and lather to pass through without clogging the blade.
A great example of an open comb safety razor is the German made Timor Pure: www.executive-shaving.co.uk/p...
This is a three piece razor, the image to the right shows the difference in razor head and the row of open teeth in place of the straight bar.
Who should use an open comb safety razor?
Given the slightly more aggressive nature of the open comb safety razor they are best suited to the more experienced wet shaver. However, with time and practice you can master them to give a smooth, close shave. The key is to take your time with the razor, use short strokes and ensure that you have prepared your face properly before shaving. Use a pre shave soap or oil and a good quality shaving soap or cream to create a rich shaving lather.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Closed Comb Double Edged Safety Razors:
A closed comb double edged safety is the most common form of razor produced today and it is one of the most popular used by millions of wet shavers around the world. A closed comb razor head provides extra protection for the user by the use of a straight, safety bar that runs the length of the razor blade.
This bar can be flat or have small grooves in it. Its purpose is to tighten the skin just before the blade cuts through the hairs. This ensures a smoother flatter, shaving surface for the razor and so reduces the risk of nicks or cuts to the skin by the blade.
A classic example of a closed comb safety razor is the Muhle R89: www.executive-shaving.co.uk/p...
This a three piece razor, you can see from the image to the right that the razor head has a straight edge bar which runs the entire length of the razor blade.
Who should use a closed comb safety razor?
A closed comb safety razor is perfect for all wet shavers, both novices and experienced users alike. It is the razor best suited for regular daily use. You must always remember to prepare your face and beard properly before shaving. Use a pre shave soap or oil and a good quality shaving soap or cream to create a rich, protective shaving lather.

Every point you made was very valid. I've bought and used an open comb razor that held the blade at a very aggressive angle, no surprises that I don't use that particular razor anymore. After much trial and error I settled on using a combination razor where one side is open comb while the other side is closed, just because it suits how I live. You see sometimes I forget to shave for a week and when I finally get around to it the open comb does a great job of cutting away the long growth without the problem of a razor jammed up with hair, and with a final pass after re-lathering from the closed comb side the finished shave is excellent and smooth without any bloodshed.

Well done. Thanks for the honesty, it's appreciated when social media today is saturated with monetized incentives... In my experience, an open comb is useful for a week's stubble head shave, if it offers more gap. Naturally, with more stubble, I would use a thick lather which is easier to whisk with an open comb. Generally, with more gap and open teeth, it becomes an easier shave with fewer passes. In comparison with all other things being equal, a closed comb would either take a little more time rinsing off build-up, or an extra pass is needed. For regular shaves, I am like you, a closed comb like the R89 is perfect.

Have to agree with you Brian. The laws of physics say that you would get a more comfortable shave with a closed comb DE due to the glide being more continuous opposed to the open comb where you will have gaps. That’s the only difference, and/or benefit I can see between both types.

They both shave BUT the OC is more aggressive and you can achieve a faster BBS shave. I use the Muhle R1 and also love the Fatip OC head too. I started with a DE89 CC but for me the OC is better. But I agree with your argument, I had a Merkur OC and had to sell it as it was so mild it sucked! What would the R41 be classed as? There is no comb only a blunt rake! I’ll bought a Fatip slant yesterday and can’t wait to try it. In 2021 I think I’ll buy a Muhle Rocca stainless.

@@viennakrakatoaleipzignumbers you know what, I completely forgot about this comment but you reminded me so although a bit late here are my findings: R41 vs R89 wouldn't be too different and it's just marketing gimmicks I thought when purchasing the extra head but I still did. After shaving with R89 once I thought it was pretty good but wasn't too easy to shave with, it just didn't cut very well at times I felt, you'd have to go over the same spots multiple times at times and you'd have to actually use some force cause it's so opposite of agressive (i guess). But still it was decent. After my first time using R89 I shaved with the R41 next and boy it was day and night difference. R41 is so sharp it feels like, i don't know if it's the difference in angle (if there is such a thing) or the open comb... it just cut everything pretty much perfectly BUT you have to have a very good control with it to not cut yourself or irritate your skin because as I mentioned it's crazy aggressive. I didn't cut myself but I irritated around the part under my chin because I went over it multiple times with lots of force so I kind of damaged the skin a bit on my first go. So all in all I'd suggest you get R41 and be extremely careful and once you get the hang of it (which I'm sure you will after a couple of uses) you'll be glad you got that one instead of R89. Hope that helps someone, have a great day you all!

I have both. You're right in that the design of the razor determines how close of a shave it can be. The blade also contributes. In my experience, open comb is great to shave off lots of hair at one time. It keeps the entire razor from building up which can be so annoying on a closed comb that sometimes you might have to take apart the razor mid shave to wipe collected cream/soap and hair stuck on the blade in between the razor. With open comb it's easier to rinse it off although it still depends on the amount of hair. Closed comb does make it easier for a closer shave because with more of the comb on the face, more of the skin is being pulled evenly allowing for a closer shave more evenly over more of the face at a time. Anyway, thanks for sharing, take care!

I used a safety for a short period many years ago, in my 20's and although I liked the closeness, I was just using regular bar soap and not prepping my face, so it was never really a comfortable shave. I just went back to a closed comb safety, and I was amazed at what proper skin prep can do. At first, I didn't think the blade was even touching my skin, and I was tempted to press down, because it felt like just the bar against my skin. Wow, was I wrong! Sooo smooth! Just need to get a little more technique right around the bottom of the neckline, but it was a great, easy shave and surprisingly, didn't cut myself once. And all I was using was a Van Der Hagen right off the drug store shelf with the blades it came with.

Hi Brian, I think there is a lot of hipe surrounding the closed or open comb competition, in my experience what really counts is how much of the blade is really exposed; you can find a closed comb that is an aggressive razor and, on the other hand, you can get a very gentle open comb. And then you got to be good at pairing it up to the right blade. Nice hobby the traditional shaving one!! Cheers from Sicily

very nice video and always an interesting topic. and then, you also have the double open comb razors which act completely different in my experience. they can be very very mild, or quite efficient. i do find those pretty good at buffing because of the ‘lather channels’. So shorter strokes work really well with those for me. But I agree on the more scratchy feeling, depending on what razor ofcourse. When I haven’t shaved for some days I tend to go for a DOC or open comb. But ofcourse a closed comb will do fine too. The great thing about having so much choice: everyone can pick what they like and nothing is wrong as long as it works for you! :)

Hi Sebastian - thanks for watching. Out of the two razors you mentioned the Merkur 25C is the more aggressive razor. This is an open comb head so there is more blade exposure. Open comb razors are ideal for those with coarser stubble.

Hi, Great video ino because you just say the practicality of how it is without the hype which seems to be hard to find. I do get the less-clogging probability for open comb razors, but overall I'm a closed comb guy. Having said that, I was so p**sed off at Gillette's man-hating commercial that (encouraged by others) I've spent just over the last two years designing a new adjustable and replaceable blade SE razor to be made in the UK. After many prototypes it's just been completed this last month and will soon be launched on a crowdfunding site. It's awesome, not for everyone as there are so many personal likes and dislikes, but I won't ever have to buy another razor again, lol. PS: I came to watch the video because someone asked me to make an open comb accessory for mine and I just wanted to make sure what I thought about open comb's was factual. I'll do it, but the only reason is for the quickness on longer hair relative to clogging issues.

Hello, I am very new to safety razors and am eagerly awaiting my order from yourselves of soap, brush and stand. Unfortunately I didn't know of you when I bought my razor, but I would like to ask you a question. What do you think of adjustable razors for a beginner ?? Are they too much faff ?? Should I just buy a closed comb say for example and get used to the simple mechanics of shaving without the variability?? I am a subscriber to you and your website. The content is thorough, trust worthy and not long winded like some of the American sites ! Thank you in advance, Tomorrow will be my first ever safety razor shave........and I'm 53 !!:-)

Hi Paul, thanks for watching and for your business! Adjustable razors are fine and can be good for beginners but we'd recommend starting on the lowest setting of whatever razor you choose. However, really think you can't go wrong with a closed comb such as the MÜHLE R89 or the Merkur 34C. I agree with the feel of oc vs cc. It would seem to me that only about 1/2 of the blade is being used on an open comb. And when you throw the blade out, if you looked at it with eye loop you would see that. I just don't get the concept as being logical with an open. Used one this morning and got a nice 3 pass shave. I have had better. The feel along makes me agree that closed is the comfortable one and had given me the best shaves ever.

I have a game changer 84p plate base plate and an open comb 84p plate. I only use the open comb for very long hair or head shaves. I don't like going against the growth with open comb. Standard bar for me is more enjoyable and gives better audio feedback but for very long hair it will get clogged up, open comb never clogs because it the hair goes on the outside of it. Open comb feels smoother to me and requires less passes.

With all due respect, I think that the safety razor open comb is more efficient since shaving is closer to the root with fewer strokes and this contributes to the BBS, a close comb for me is like a cat's tongue on my face, I don't even perceive it, I feel like it's definitely not for me.
