The 2S7 Pion Gun - heavy artillery hurting both sides
The Soviet self-propelled 2S7 is known as the most powerful howitzer in the world. The Russians are getting a taste of their own medicine in the Ukrainian conflict.

US and NATO had the M110A2 203mm SPG that were recently retired from service but still very powerful and effective weapons! They should all give it to the Ukranians and its entire stock of ammunition!

I am not sure they have much stock. There was a plan to give them to Taiwan as coastal artillery. I don't know that the plan was ever put in action. Moving a 203mm SPG is not easy. You see the Soviet makes in the video As for ammo, I think stocks of M110 shells would be low. Not impossible to replace but it would take time. The 2S7 is a fat Target for both sides. I see that as one of the reasons the US retired the M110.

So I am asking many of them to back up their humor with links to production numbers but all they do is give me the runaround. Russia doesn't seem to be blasting as much artillery and rockets as when this SMO 1st started, so I wonder if it is lack of ammo, worn out weaponry, destroyed weaponry, so many dead Russians a combination of all of these or something else. @@andrewc0128 No, I don't, and you won't get them, because that information is tantamount to a state secret in Russia. For six months we've heard that Russia is "running out of ammunition". The Allied forces haven't taken Kharkov, Kherson, Zaporozhiye and other major cities by being low on ammunition. That's illogical. Also, there is a report allegedly leaked from the Ukrainian Stavka revealing that the UAF have lost around 192,000 men and are at less than 43% battle effectiveness. Anecdotal reports indicate the overwhelming nature of Russian artillery barrages, again, from the Ukrainians themselves. That doesn't happen with ammunition running out. This is war. You are not going to get neat little figures of 2+2=4 to provide you with a case you could take to court. Conflicts are foggy affairs, information is vague or obscured, the eyewitness of one man may differ significantly from that of his neighbour a few metres away. @@Alex462047 State secrets huh? You telling me that information isn't available for someone with a bit of common sense and a calculator? Anyway, I seem to remember Russians made it into Kiev fairly quickly, but they aren't there now. So, I kinda wonder why. There are quite a few plausible reasons, ran out of supplies, supplies getting bombed with Himars or Excalibur rounds, getting annihilated, equipment failure, damaged equipment that we can see tons of videos of, and doesn't seem to be getting replaced at any perceivable rate. Russia also (1) doesn't seem to be shooting as much artillery as in the beginning of the SMO. I think other than the 50,000 or so killed already, (That Russia doesn't seem to want to collect from the refrigerated railcars) most of the soldiers are tired of getting slaughtered and of slaughtering their neighbors under false pretenses. I think that is likely because Ukrainians are using Western supplied weapons and technology to hit the supply depots.
We had the 175mm and the 8", or 203mm field artillary in Vietnam. Ordnance developed a tactical nuke for 155mm, "negating" the need for that larger conventional shells. That was Cold War doctrine, and we now have the ability to do more damage with coordinated firing, plus we have enhanced ranged munitions, so we don't need the larger calibers in the field.

@marksnyder8189
Жыл бұрын
That is exactly correct. Large guns are only a feature of static warfare because they are hard to move. And resupply. I was reading about the Obusier 520 not long ago. They were the largest guns ever built by the French. At 520 mm, they were among the largest ever built by anyone. In 1916, these two giant guns were made, seeing action I think in 1917. In 1918, a shell cooked off in the breech of one of the guns, killing the crew. The other 520 was put away in a shed and forgotten. Fast forward to World War 2. The Germans we're going through French military stocks after the French surrendered in 1940. They found the surviving Obusier 520. No one loves big Arty like a German (every modern gun bigger than the 520 was German) When the Germans invaded the USSR in 1941, they moved rapidly, but by 1942 they came to besiege Sevastopol in Crimea. They dragged the big guns, including the French 520, across Europe to pummel the Soviet fort. After firing a few rounds, a shell cooked off in the breech, killing most of the crew. Big guns require lots of people and resources. The bigger you go, the more you put into it, for diminishing returns. Heavy guns are slow, their ammo is cumbersome, and the gains in destructive power are minimal. Rocket artillery and newer 155 ammunition render these ponderous relics just about obsolete. We are seeing them because Ukraine is defending near their depots, and Russia is attacking just across the border.
@brianmead7556

You never have many of these guns, and the purpose of them is priority, specific fire missions, such as destroying a command post or a bunker or enemy batteries or enemy dumps or enemies staging. You don’t just shell away with these you pick a specific target and give it a volley.

Both sides have the weapon. But the Ukrainians have God on their side to help them use theirs. That changes things. 🙏🏽 🇺🇦

@@ballerblocks I didn't make an argument yet. I am just trying to find out why all these people are laughing at the "Russia is running out of ammo" comments because they seem to know something everyone else doesn't. So, if they do, then they should be able to provide a reliable source for their argument and laughing, right? But all I get from them is the runaround. We can find out pretty easily what Ukraine has and what it has acquired. Russia doesn't seem to be blasting as much artillery and rockets as when this SMO 1st started, so I wonder if it is lack of ammo, worn out weaponry, destroyed weaponry, so many dead Russians a combination of all of these or something else. I'm giving up hope though. I think that they just want Russia to have more artillery to bomb Ukraine and force it into submission for whatever reason.
Soviet not Russia.

What? This looks nothing like the 88mm. The Russians most likely copied the 8 inch (aka 203mm) US M110, which was made in 1963. Russians made these 2S7 in 1975. However, putting what is basically an 8 inch naval gun on tank tracks is not really a quantum leap in technological achievement.

Russia is an industrial power house and can make mortar rounds… Ukraine can’t…
The strategically important suburb of Donetsk - the well-fortified Peski - is almost completely occupied. Ukrainian fighter Sergei Gnyezdilov admitted that during the last days it was ``hell'' in that settlement, that the Ukrainian artillery was almost completely destroyed, and that the surviving Ukris were running away... Gnyezdilov claims that in just 24 hours, about 6,500 grenades * From there, the forces of the DNR and the Russian army will move north. On Orlovka. With the intention of hitting the Ukrims who are defending Avdejevka from behind. DPR forces that entered Marjinka will head south - to Ugljedar _________________________________________________________ The entire Ukrainian vertical is collapsing, which is the last fortified line of defense east of Slavyansk, Kramtorsk, Druzhkovka, Konstantinovka and Ugljedar. The units of the Second Corps of the Army of the DNR entered Soledar, the previous experience has shown - in a few days, every town that the allied forces entered, as well as its outskirts, fell. The Russian army and the DPR fighters are advancing towards Bakhmut as well. From the east, southeast and south. They occupied the nearby settlements of Semigorje and Veršina and control both heights around the small town of Kodem, which the Ukris cannot actually defend anymore. With the fall of Kodema, the forces of the Kiev junta will have half the chance of holding Bahmut for the next few days. The entry of allied forces into Bahmut, at least from one side, is possible in the next 20-30 hours. The strategically important suburb of Donetsk - the well-fortified Peski - is almost completely occupied. Ukrainian fighter Sergej Gnyezdilov admitted that during the last days it was ``hell'' in that settlement, that the Ukrainian artillery was almost completely destroyed, and that the surviving Ukrainians were fleeing... Gnjezdilov claims that about 6,500 shells fell on the Ukro positions in just 24 hours. From there, the forces of the DNR and the Russian army will move north. On Orlovka. With the intention of hitting the Ukrims who are defending Avdejevka from behind. Allied forces enter Peski The 1st Corps of the DNR penetrated into Marjinka, which (also opposite Donetsk) is located a little further south and already controls a good part of it. A successful attack on the nearby settlements of Krasnogorovka and Staromikhaylovka is underway, which means that the fall of Maryinka is only a matter of time. From Krasnogorovka, the way to the south opens up for the allied forces, so in a few days it will be possible to attack the Ukrainian garrison holding Ugljedar from the poorly defended west. As soon as these operations are brought to an end, more than half of the southwestern part of the Donetsk Republic will be liberated.

These types of guns were retired in the west due to obsolescence and lack of protection. Only the former Soviet republics still use them and only the Ukraine upgraded and maintained them. There are a lot of banana peel pictures showing up on Russian pages of social media as well as the Ukrainian capturing them. They don't have enough replacement barrels or modern ammunition in the Russian army sacrifices are made in crew and guns because it is easier to replace the full system with stored ones than the barrel. A lot of corrosion issues and even completely warn out guns put in storage after Chechnya are put back into action without replacing or upgrading anything. I guess they don't care about people and especially conscripts as much as they pretend to typical Nazi behaviour sacrifice the people for Fuhrer Putin.

Correction Deflection: The M110a2 was replaced because the US no longer needed a diffuse short range tactical nuclear weapon delivery system ... and it's 30K strike capability was not deep enough compared to M270MLRS/HIMARS ... and it wasn't "tanky" enough for the Armor/Cav guys ... who always wanted their HOW batteries (Pretty sure if Armor guys were still running stuff, they'd still have M109Anuthin's trying to keep up with the latest Abrams variant ...
