Kendrick Lamars GKMC is a coming of age story. In this album he explores the ideas of peer pressure, addiction, justice, and overcoming through a day in the life of teenage K.Dot with his homies. In this video essay we will dive deep into the dark world that is Good Kid mAAd City.
This video was three months in the making, from writing the 40 page essay itself to recording, to the sound design and editing. And NOW the video was taken down from youtube smh... It me took four months of sleepless nights and moments of boarder line insanity to make this for you all to enjoy. So I hope you do just that, enjoy. I love you guys, see you soon.

This album transfers me to a different world. I’m a white woman from Canada, I never related to Kendrick especially when I first heard it at 15. But it feels like a privilege to be let in on such a vulnerable state, and being led through all the experiences people like Kendrick have; It completely changed the way I view the world. It’s true you could substitute “maad city” for any devil on your shoulder in your own life… but the project itself is so moving & monumental in its own right that that’s unnecessary

i feel the same way. right now im a 16 year old white guy and the closest ive gotten to anything like this is when i was little and my mom was a broke college student. i feel like with works like GKMC, you don't need to have experienced anything like it and you dont need to swap out the struggles for whatever struggle youre dealing with purely because of how well-written and how guttural the subject matter is. i feel like i have a healthy respect and solidarity for that struggle, and i have an immense appreciation for lyricism and the artistic minds that go into things like this. not many artists can do that, but kendrick is above everyone else in that sense (in my opinion)

Thank you for your comment. It reminded me of my own homework as a youth. I’m 64 and back then, Stevie Wonder was an iconic voice. My teacher played “Living for the City” to us. It was so moving to me. I’m so glad I’m getting to know Kendrick now. I actually had written off hip hop because IMO, it had become offensive and was destroying us - but KDot’s work is truly refreshing.

on sing about me im dying of thirst, when dave's brother sais "But the type of bullet that stuck had went against his will, that's blood spilled on your hands my plans rather vindictive" he’s not just thanking kendrick for conforting his brother as he died, but he is also reasuring kendrick that "blood spilled on your hands" was because of his plan and not anything kendrick did wrong. He is talking about what happened the previous night and what will happen the next night, highlighting the cycle he is stuck in, and the hopelessness he feels in compton.

I’m from the same neighborhood as Kendrick, I can relate to so many themes of the album. Growing up in the same city and coming from that place to build yourself is one of the hardest things in the world. The shit he went through to make this album is way harder than what I’ve been through, but he went way further. He’s on stages all over the world, and that last song, real, where his mom is on the voice mail saying to inspire kids like me means the world to me and inspires me daily. This video was so well made, I’d love a to pimp a butterfly video. RIP to Chad, he died only a couple streets away, so I could get b-roll footage if you need.

See THIS is why when it comes to the greatest of all time and who’s the better artist I jump straight to Kendrick. Who else can convey a personal feeling and message that can also be expressed and shared with the world and ANYONE and EVERYONE can relate to so throughly! He conveys human emotion and consciousness in such a way I don’t think we’ll ever get again.
Excellent breakdown of a masterpiece, thanks for the all the hard work it took to make.

the way kendrick comes up with songs how can any1 think this dude aint "big me"
say mane. the way you used the track stems in the editing is crazy. like not even just using the acapellas to focus on the lyrics, but like stripping away elements of the song to really highlight the instrumentation and hone in on the vibe they was going for wit it, or changing it up for transitions and pacing &shit. i can tell you put a lotta thought into that, shit kinda genius.

Damn, didn't expect to tear up at the end. Thank you. This was so good.
This is a great analysis. I relate to Kendrick a lot in this record because I was almost the same way as him growing up, with the difference that for me it was in Latin America. I was that kid who always was instigated into doing the wrong things, and while I almost never gave in, I did do my fair bit of bad things kids shouldn’t do. I used to steal money, I used to not care about school and ignore elder’s advice, and for most of my childhood I adapted to my environment. However, deep inside, alone in my room, I was that kid afraid of not making it back home the next day. I was always afraid that my mom would never make it back home. My dad was semi involved with criminals and due to that he wasn’t allowed in the city I lived in. So he wasn’t present. That combined with the fact that he liked the party life meant that I grew up only with my mom. Therefore, later in life a lot of my behavior with partners, with friends, and especially with myself came from a feeling of abandonement I always had as a result of the circumstances I grew up in. Not to mention that being in a single mother-of-two household in a poor country meant that we were far from financially stable. On top of that, seeing someone get killed, bodies everywhere whether it is in the news on in town, that shit changes you. For me, that day I saw that guy get killed, I went in my room and shut myself from everything for weeks. I remember realizing that there is no god protecting us, and that ultimately we as a community have fallen into the trap of trusting in a higher power to take us out of the misery we put ourselves in by buying into the idea that maybe one day everything will change. Eventually as I became an adult I put my past to rest, forgave myself and others, and I live a fairly decent life away from all that. There are still sequels of the trauma, but I have learned to cope with them. This record means a lot to me because not many get to have this type of awakening Kendrick had, or the one I had. Great video dude!
@puneetsethi92

wow you have lived a harsh life and it is amazing how can an album save many children like you, like me, and like all of us, we always have our inner consciousness is telling us what's right and what's not but we ignore them because of peer pressure, for me, I didn't have any of this life and I thank god for it, but still I relate to this album because of peer pressure, I never drink, smoked or have any bad morals or habits even our society think it's cool and even my friends my family thinks it co0ll and I should do the same in peer pressure but this album opens our minds to love ourselves first then we will not fall in these peer pressure and we will do what we love, I love astronomy, music like this and sports and that's why I avoid all parties, any smoking and all of that because it's not I love and I won't do any of these in peer pressure just a great album. hope it will help the generation to follow what they love not what others want them to do
