The 2026 Formula 1 Regulations are "slower than Formula 2", apparently.

So yeah, the simulator feedback is "alarming", and the car is having to be driven in such a conservative way, that they end up "slower than the current Formula 2 machinery." Damn.

@@TommoOnKZreadIf the hybrid era didn't kill F1, it appears the next regs definitely will. It all sounds like a complete shambles. How is a driver supposed to make any difference with that level of complex technology being involved !? It's bad enough the engine will change (worsen) again, but to couple that with a significant aero complexity at the same time probably means we'll get another ultra-dominant era. The most interesting seasons in recent F1 history have been after a long period of convergence where teams can't squeeze much more performance from the regs. It's downright stupid to make another significant change so soon. I'm hoping they use these "findings" to postpone the new regs to 2030

@mvd4436 the idea is to have smaller car. The cars got wider because it's easier to make a wide car faster. The problem is with small cars you can't reduce the weight by enough to counteract the areo, especially because safety will be as important if not more important because it's new territory. The engine will also be worst because we are in a time with big shifts. Either everything turn to Electric or we make Eco fuel work so obviously the engines are more or less the first real ones in test as f1 was for year the testarea for new ideas and innovative for street cars.

Looking back it's clear that if we just stayed with the 2021 regs we'd have RedBull, Ferrari, Mercedes and McLaren AT LEAST all competing at the front of the grid. The field spread was pretty huge in 2021. Much bigger than it was now - even after 5 years of those regs we were nowhere near convergence. Had mercedes not made the decision to use the 2020 chassis in 2021 they would have walked that title. It's worth remembering that they were the only team other than Haas to not introduce any token spend. And even then they were on the podium at virtually every race.
@unfortunately_fortunate2000

funniest thing is that by the time McLaren and Ferrari finally do have consistently competitive cars it'll be a season too late, I too thought that 2021 showed that multiple teams had figured out and perfected how to race & develop their cars in the high downforce super dirty air, granted the ground effect regs have brought teams closer to front running pace a whole lot quicker than the old regulations ever did. so it's not all doom and gloom, imo it is a very poorly timed change though, 2025 is gonna be everyone's last bite at the cherry and based on how the RB20 looks right now, the RB21 is going to be a big problem for anyone elses title dreams in 2025. the old regulations went on for too long but that last season with them was insane up and down the grid.

This directly effects the power unit which will impact the speed. The 2026 V-6 will have 33% less power under the new rules, reducing output to about 560hp (it's around 1000hp now I think). My friend is working at Mercedes and told me this at least 10 months ago. Theyve wildly fucked up the de-rate by removing elements of the PU. The addition of Active Aero is a knee-jerk reaction to the insane amount of drag these cars have been found to produce. Max Verstappen already expressed his concerns about the regulations 9 months ago. They were talking about the engine, that it had to be 60% conventional PU and 40% electric. Because with 50/50 they would have to lift on the straights or something to recharge the battery. No-one really listened because they would just say it was only to try and get an advantage again with Red Bull. Tommo this was a pretty cool and fresh presentation style. It would be nice to see some of these more vlogy type videos sprinkled in with your normal videos.
I dont mind the idea that F1 slows down and corners like 130R actually get treated like corners again. That feels like something that will make for more overtaking opportunities in varying locations. However if the active aero systems that should be making the cars faster are messing up the whole system that the drivers only use 60% of the cars potential... thats just stupid. As for the 50/50 energy source split, I still hate the direction of electric cars in fundamental principle. The environmental value of the course of the battery lifecycle has minimal benefits over fossil fuels and the raw materials are just as scarce as usable carbon. I would much rather F1 stick with the goals of using synthetic fuels where the energy source itself is near infinite if you use carbin recapture, and if the grid is green the net carbin is near zero, plus the process can be used to make polymer materials making the footprint net negative.
The birds are called Hadedas. They are very loud, very annoying and will wake you up in the morning. When you live here, you get use to them but for visiters, they can be overwhelming. If you are unfamiliar just search Hadeda sound and you'll see why 😂

Very informative video and I never expected you to come down to Cape Town, South Africa! Welcome Tommo!!
Anyone could have seen this inevitability just from reading the regulations. Just quickly, they're: > Keeping the same engine but introducing more spec parts > Reducing the energy (power) of the fuel so the engines can only make around 500hp and that's an optimistic estimate. > Made the engines more expensive and harder to develop (because same engine + more spec parts + less energy from fuel so its much harder to find power and performance) > Reducing the fuel capacity to 80L > Increasing battery size (and thus weight) > Doing nothing else to significantly shave off weight and their current weight target is the weight of the 2021 F1 cars, which were still too heavy > Reducing downforce, > Mandating a 50/50 power split between ICE and electric and then keeping current arbitrary limits on electric power regen, storage and deployment. And because the electric power can only be used at certain times and they've made it so the hybrid system has to put out more energy to meet the 50/50 target than it can recuperate and store, that means F1 cars are going to have 50% of their power missing except for specific moments. Worse still: because the cars can't regen enough energy quick enough, they have to go on fuel burning laps to generate energy, but they can't do that because their fuel tank has been reduced by 20%. It's utter foolishness.
@RANDOMZBOSSMAN1
Ай бұрын
Yup exactly this but fans were eating up things like turbo lag. Turbo lag was being promoted by the official f1 channel!!! You never want that ish in a car it’s a stupid ruleset and anyone who read the rules properly knew the potential issues that were gonna occur how can you weight loss when batteries have worst energy availability than Fuel and you’re relying more on them??? This is before the issue of even charging up the batteries
@charliemaybe
Ай бұрын
yeah they should make the cars smaller, un cap the charge rate and regen rate, and these cars should be sub 1500 lbs easily instead of the min being almost 1800 lbs. This can be easily done with a more PU heavy setup and using more capacitors instead of batteries for a lighter setup that still allows for a quick power boost like a push to pass instead of relying on the electric to make up a ton of power. They should just open up the PU regs and just put a power cap on the total car. With the fuel limit, this will force manufactures to be creative in their choices for efficiency, power, and weight. With the cost cap and a better min weight limit, this could create a competitive racing field with the engineering side that all fans love. It would also allow for the grid to sound unique like wec
The cost cap has worked, the cars haven’t. The new cars are ugly big and slower yet produce just as much dirty air. Bring back the 2018/19/20 regs but just make the cars smaller and put in a hybrid v8 of some sort

Meh, I don’t mind saving 100 dollars a year and switching to Indycar if this actually happens.
great format 👌🏼pauses felt really nice. keep it up!
Appreciated you made a video on holiday. Thanks man x
I find it funny that when Red Bull gave a similar warning last year everybody dismissed it as scaremongering or Red Bull is behind with their engine. If they at least did the simulations to verify Red Bull's warning then we wouldn't be a year behind with this problem.
Hey Tommo, that's a Hadeda, they are super loud!!
Wow, I really liked this new video with you outside this time 😂. Very nice!
Love the new video format. Keeps it dynamic!!!
2:25 Was that a gran turismo 4 soundtrack? I got flashbacks of childhood memories 😁

Tommo frequently uses menu music from the GT games. As a long time GT player (since GT1 in '98) it is one of the choices that endears me to his content the most. Such lovely nostalgia vibes.

@@ShonnDaylee Also the little beep when he shows a picture is from the old GTA games I believe.
The bird is probably some kind of Ibis. Though I don’t know African birds very well tbf

Welcome to Cape Town Tommo I hope you enjoy our city! 🇿🇦 Awesome video!
The bird at 3:43 is a Hadida. You find them all over SA. Also, I don't know if this was recorded a while ago and if you are still in Cape Town, but I hope you held up okay with the extreme winds that were there over the weekend.

Who really gives a shit about speed as long as the racing is good?

It's supposed to be the pinnacle of motersport, it should be one of the fastest categories if not the fastest

true!! using that logic, i think we should all stop watching F1 and go and watch Karting instead!!!

@@Pobsworth What the fuck does it matter if cars can go 380 kph if the racing sucks? I think top fuel dragsters would be more to your liking, buddy.

@@extremegrieferbible theres obviously a middle ground. F1 is supposed to be 'the pinnacle of motorsport', you think people are gonna believe that to be true if the cars are slower than those racing in the WEC or other series around the world? Obviously the racing matters, your argument makes no sense for current F1 tho, the racing for the past 2 seasons has been completely shit, regardless of their speed.

great editing mister Tommo :) a joy to watch
Cheers for still making videos during your holiday Tommo!

Absolutely loved this video format! keep it up!
Yo that’s fantastic audio for being outside😂, Most KZread videos outside sound like they’re in a wind storm. Big ups 🙌
EV proponent here. I find the hybrid tech is bad for F1 right now. The cars are too big and heavy. Once solid state batteries are available then maybe hybrids will be feasible (light). Roll back the chassis to pre 2014 size, go with a bigger v6 with turbo(s). Ferrari can make a great sounding v6 in their 269 gtb, so F1 can certainly bring back some of the sound. We ain't getting back the old v10/v12 pretty noise. And fix the aero so people can follow closely and pass with slipstream.

You can't just "fix" the aero, we're talking about unavoidable physics interactions. Car goes faster, drag increases. Drag increases, dirty air increases. Dirty air increases... etc. Ground effect helped a little, but the new regs made the cars slower for the first few seasons, and now they're getting faster and the whole drag and dirty air situation returns. They were already talking about it in the early 90s, and it has really been in the sport since the start -- the engineers, pundits, and drivers just didn't necessarily know about it. On top of this, cars in F1 just don't spend enough time on a straight for the slipstream to become meaningful, it will always be more about grip out of the corner before the straight.
Cool video format, do more like this!
This video format was really fun!!
Great video, love the format. Reminds me of Ted doing his Notebook during early Covid while out on a walk.
How on earth you managed to produce such a high quality video on location is crazy! Great work!
Remember how they complained about how slow this generation of cars would be (back in 2021)?? In the engineers we trust.
I need more Tommo videos out in the wild. Such a vibe
Good to see you shoot from outside for a change, and we also get to see a new place. Combining travel vlog with your regular f1 content.
Great Video Tommo Love from SA
Loved the new video style, so much more fresh, unique and interesting!
W vlog type format. Very good mate
i loved this vlog style video tommo
Oh and the bird at 03:39 is a Hadeda (Hadada ibis). They loud AF
So cool seeing my home town in one of your videos ❤
The videography and editing in this video was awesome you should go for a similar aesthetic more often
Potentially unpopular opinion but does it matter? The aim is to improve racing by making them smaller & lighter whilst also making them more sustainable. If lap time mattered, they wouldn't have introduced the ground effect regulations.
i don't remember where but i'll try find it, but the front and rear wing are supposedly going to work in tandem and both be active
All they need to do is make the cars smaller. Maybe 0.8 the size they are now. The field is close enough that size reduction so they can fit past each other is all thats needed
I like that you are outside :) Adds to the video IMO
The even more fundamental problem that isn't getting addressed is that the cars are too large and too heavy (and have been for some time now) The shameful reality is that the rules are more concerned with F1's sustainability image than with the on-track product
I'm really liking the vlog parts of this
I agree. I'd like to see the cars smaller.... before these changes they are already on the knife edge. Make them simpler not more complex.
I like this style of video, you walking around, etc
Really liked the style of this video!
