The 2024 Polestar 2 Is A More Compelling Premium Electric Luxury Sedan

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

When the #Polestar2 first came to market in 2020, it was one of the first direct Tesla Model 3 rivals to come to market. For 2024, #Polestar is making some big changes, especially to the #Polestar2SingleMotor which gains a new rear-mounted electric motor, giving it RWD and a new battery pack, allowing for up to 320 miles of range.

I have had a Polestar 2 for two years. I like the car a lot. The design is clean and less is more. I've got the fabric interior and it is okay but more on that in a minute. I've got the dual motor and this car is fun to drive for a number of reasons. First off many still don't know what it is and that's cool because there is minimum badging. Driving it is fun. It's quick and handles really well. I'd even argue it has more power than most people need or can handle. The power is linear and instant which is typical for an EV. It rivals any of the top sport sedans. It's a little surprising because the car sits higher than most. I jokingly call it a crossover but it's a joy to drive. I don't care what they are saying the 0-60 is but if you are coming from an internal combustion engine you will feel that it's fast. Now let me highlight some things I think could be improved and some that just can't be improved. I'm 6'2" and I fit but it's snug. My kids can sit behind me without issues. The stated range is 240 miles but when you drive this like the sport sedan it is you will never see that. It's not any different than MPG. If you have a heavy foot your MPG goes down. This summer I've been pretty active and have frequently gotten into the car sweaty. Remember I've got fabric seats. I've never owned a car with fabric seats and I'm learning over time they need to be cleaned because they hold odor. The panoramic roof has no shade so for those in warm weather climates and have sensitivity to sun and heat that might be an issue. I've got the 20" wheels and think they look fantastic. The ride is surprisingly compliant and I live in the NYC area with some of the worst streets in the world. Wheel size is subjective and I didn't like the style of the smaller wheel and the car's stance. I thought it looked like a bargain SUV on stilts with the smaller wheel. Last point, I leased my car because I knew the tech was and is evolving for ALL EVs. I knew there'd be better tech in 3 years, more range and faster charging. I'll consider buying the larger sedan that's coming if the range approaches 400 miles. It's been very reliable and a cool car.

I have a 2022 PS2 and have to do that for various reason semi-frequently… you hold your finger on the “home” line until it restarts. For Québec to be eligible, mrsp of the car has to start under 55k$CAD(40kUSD) so no incentive for BMW, Mercedes and such. Also close to the average price of overall new cars sold. Has to why, EVs are very popular here because 1) we pay about 5$usd a gallon for gas 2) Québec doesn't have oil 3) what we do have is cheap electricity made from Hydro, that is owned by the government (we pay about 0.07usd$ /kwh) . The money from charging EV goes in the government's pocket. Here, it's about 8 times cheaper to charge than to fill a tank. Different reality.

I have a 2022 awd Pilot pack. I absolutely love it. It is a four door sports car. I love the way it handles. I love the features. Things I would like to see improved: The usb-c ports for phones are in a vulnerable spot for damage. (That's probably why his phone wouldn't connect to Apple car play. ) The cords stick straight up in the air at the plug. It's very easy to hit it and damage the port. That weird fabric on the dash and window sills doesn't clean easily. It's not as simple as wiping the dust off with a damp cloth. The app needs more features. It's very basic. Im seriously considering getting the 2024 model.

Polestar 2 refresh should appeal to buyers who don't like the Model 3 refresh because of the lack of stalks and the added advantage of more practicality of the Polestar 2 being a hatchback. The new RWD Polestar 2 single motor’s has 320-mile EPA range and faster charging speed. Other upgrades include an increase of 69 horsepower (299 total) and 118 extra lb-ft of torque (361 lb-ft in all). Additionally, the 440V platform can charge as high as 220 kW, charging 10-80% in 25-28 mins - a 20% speed increase, according to Polestar. Bjørn Nyland youtube video titled “Polestar 2 LR SM refresh charging test” shows the refresh 2024 Polestar 2 has much better charging speed - better than Tesla and iD4. All cars depreciate horribly (especially EVs). You don't purchase a car and trade it in one, two, or three years. You lease if you trade frequently. As mentioned in the video you can lease a Polestar 2 for less than $500 per month. Part of the difference us that historically original purchasers of EVs got substantial Federal and Local Tax Credits/incentives. The subsequent owners haven't been eligible for any of those incentives. Though in some States that's changing now.

My only gripe with Polestar 2 is the sound system is horrible. Maybe it’s just the cheap version I got on the rental, but Model Y has so much better system. My Volvo XC90 has the Bower Wilkins, but it still doesn’t sound as good as Tesla stock sound system.

Considering that they have now switched over to lfp batteries, they are larger than the nickel based batteries, so I doubt you can get the dual motor version with an 84 KW pack. Unless of course they go back to putting a nickel base battery in with the dual motor version. One thing that you did not mention is that the 2023 and earlier versions utilizing the nickel-based batteries they recommend that you only charge the battery to 90% on a daily. This likely will not be the case with an lfp battery, you can usually charge them to 100% every day. Additionally an lfp battery is going to last around 25% longer before degrading.

I think he got that wrong. Pretty sure its still a NMC battery. It's lithium-ion, sure, but nmc are also lithium-ion, so that might be the reason he mixed it up. Would be great if I was wrong, but pretty sure i'm not.

@@erik5820 Considering that the new LR Model 3 is utilizing an LMFP 79kWh pack from CATL and CATL is also Polestar's supplier, why wouldn't the new Rear Wheel Drive Polestar 2 be utilizing a new 79kWh pack from CATL that IS NOT LMFP and instead is CATL's more expensive NMC version? Keep in mind the MAIN REASON they stuck to NMC is because SWEDEN IS COLD and LMFP actually performs just as well as NMC in cold weather. Granted the 84kWh NMC pack from CATL is basically the same dimensions as the 79kWh LMFP pack and because they wanted the higher performance for the dual motor version, they probably went with that one for the dual motor, but they would have had to been BRAIN DEAD to stick with such a high performance battery to be hooked up to a SINGLE MOTOR! Why? Especially when the cost per kWh is literally 30% more?

@@TheCostofAutism I'm not saying it wouldn't make sense. But I can not find a single source actually confirming the lfp. Most sources I find say nmc, and the information I find from Polestar just says 'lithium-ion' (which could be both nmc and lfp). I kind of suspect that they dont mention the nmc because of the noise concerning the Cobalt. I'm living in Norway. Picking up our new Polestar 2 LRDM next week. Would be great if it has lfp, but cannot find anything that points in that direction.

$4K for leather seats on what is essentially a Volvo? Volvo has always been one of those manufacturers that promised a lot but offers less. For me what really was striking was how minimalist and bare the cockpit was. I expect to be dazzled with an array of electronics at this price point but was underwhelmed. It seems as if the interior was afterthought.
