The 2024 Mazda CX-90 PHEV Is An Upscale 3-Row Plug-In Hybrid Sporty Family SUV

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

As Mazda's first Plug-In Hybrid SUV, the 2024 #MazdaCX90PHEV drops the charismatic 3.3L turbo I-6 engine from the regular #CX90 and replaces it with a 2.5L 4-cylinder plus a powerful electric motor with a 17.8 kWh battery pack providing the juice. The result is about 26 of electric only range and nearly the same power as the I-6 powertrain. #Mazda is looking to further push the #CX90PHEV upmarket and this new plug-in hybrid version improves on the formula.

My wife got one a month ago. Its been truly excellent. We weighed against the Volvo, Hyundai and Toyota equivalents and it hit all the sweet spots. The interior quality is really differentiator and the plug-in with decent range makes it fantastic for running around town. We get a ton of compliments on it. Most importantly we were able to get one within a few weeks of order. Hyundai and Toyota have become a nightmare to deal with, with dealer mark-ups and insane wait times. Volvo was way too expensive for some of the features it was missing. After a ton of research we felt this was the best option and it has not disappointed. I honestly would consider buying another one for me to drive.

Me and my wife have the CX90 PHEV, lucky enough to be first on the list in our city and have had it since May 2023. There are things they need to improve but we for sure love it! If we aren't leaving town we go anywhere from 1300km-1800km, at the highest, per tank of gas. When we go on longer road trips we get get around 650-750km depending on if we started with a charge and driving habits. For our expanding family it's been amazing!

Honest and fair review as always Sofyan. FYI, I just got an update on my PHEV that smoothed out the shifting tremendously (I only wished they would have shipped it out that way) but I am glad Mazda is fixing the bugs. Also, it does have lane keep assist, just not lane centering. To me it is the gas mileage that sets it apart…nothing in this class comes close. I plug mine in daily and I average around 45 - 50 mpg doing my daily 50 mile round trip commute and I fill up twice a month.

I am a sucker for Mazda’s post-2013/2014 front-end style. I love the long hood all Mazdas have now, and the grille - before they made this update, I never even took a second look at a Mazda. I actually just happened to see one of these CX-90s on the road today, they look gorgeous all the way around. I also have to give credit to Mazda’s interior styling and overall quality. I was never a particular fan of Mazdas before that 2013/2014 refresh, but then I started paying attention. They’re doing a great job offering more luxurious styling, better technology, and reasonable pricing for what you get.

Thanks, for your reviews. I'm the happy owner of a 2019 CX-5 Signature, love the brand and I really wish Mazda well on this new model. Overall it's a great vehicle, but I find the design a little bland and the I don't like rounded rear roof design. It needs some body side character lines/curves and I'd square off and make the rear more upright, sort off like the previous CX-9. That might give it a little more cargo room. Mazda's features, quality and performance for the price is great and it now competes with the luxury brands. I very satisfied with my AWD, front drive bias CX-5 and look forward to a new or refreshed CX-5 with a hybrid model or a CX-50 hybrid as promised in the past. Thanks again.

We just purchased my wife one of these last week, and we absolutely love it. We looked at the Highlander, but the Grand Highlander are never on the lots, and we were told we would have to order and wait 5 to 6 months for it. We looked at the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento hybrids but they were just too small. I drove the larger varieties from both Kia and Hyundai and both were not great. Yes, each had more room, but they seemed under powered and the body role was terrible. This is our first Mazda, and we are very happy.

I took a look at the CX-90 before I ended up getting my hybrid Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 4XE. I really liked the CX-90, they look slick, the interior was great, it handled awesome for a SUV and felt relatively quick. I ended up going with the 4XE for a couple reasons, mostly I needed a more off road capable SUV as I hunt, camp and mountain bike where I am often on some nasty roads that could high center a low SUV like the CX-90 and Jeep has some nutty lease deals where I got $22k off the purchase price with rebates and dealer discounts, so the lease was cheap, relative to the MSRP of the vehicle. I imagine that the CX-90 would be at least as efficient as the 4XE if plugged in regularly. I am at over 1000 miles so far and still on my first tank of gas (almost due for a fill up), which with a 19 gallon tank brings it right in line the the estimated 56mpge. I think the upcoming CX-70 will be interesting. Looking forward to seeing that. I think that plug in hybrids are the way to go for now, until charging infrastructure improves and charge times get faster (for full EV's). Just wish that the all electric range of the 4XE and CX-90 was pushed to 50 miles, that would allow for a full commute on a charge. I can't regularly charge at my work parking garage as there are only 4 chargers and 50 EV's waiting to grab one.

For what it is, the CX90 Hybrid is a great vehicle for its class. However, since the CX60 has this same layout with identical power, seeing that this is supposed to be the flagship Mazda car above the CX60, I'm dreaming that we will eventually see a CX90 Hybrid with the Skyactiv-X inline 6 in place of this car's four-cylinder. Having such a setup could easily result in a drivetrain that produces well over 400hp, which could make it a serious threat to the QX60, MDX, XT6, and especially the TX.

I’ve owned a Mazda before and had a really good experience. The space utilization on their vehicles (especially the SUVs) is inefficient. It still doesn’t make sense that companies reduce capacity as the trim levels increase. Does the humongous CX-90 has less rear seat legroom than a Kia Sportage? They really only needed the middle seat in the 3rd row since the rest of the space has really limited usage. The A/C vents being located where your knees are makes as much sense as the seating configuration. I’ve heard reviewers say the vehicle still drives like a Mazda 👍. If I’m going to buy a 4 seater Mazda it won’t be this one.

Having 11 different trim options between the Gas and PHEV models is really confusing and pointless. I also hate that the Premium Plus doesn't mean the same thing across the 3 different versions of it (Regular, Turbo S and PHEV). The options list is so spread out and nonsensical and gate keeping ventilated seats to the highest trim is bad. And Mazda STILL not giving a true touch screen is incredibly annoying. It's only on the 12.3 inch screens and only when in Carplay mode. Beautiful redesign and great interior materials but the options sprawl and insane pricing jump from CX9 makes this a tough sell IMO.

I'm kinda baffled that no one is comparing the CX-90 to vehicles both in it's price class and target audience, something like the Buick Enclave, Volkswagen Atlas, or even the GMC Acadia come to mind. Drawing comparison to the Grand Highlander puts design functionality into perspective, but I don't think many would be cross shopping a Grand Highlander and a CX-90 like the aforementioned.

We would all love to have more range in our PHEV SUVs, but that comes at a weight cost. Our Grand Cherokee 4XE gets us about 24-26 miles on a charge, but increasing that would increase the cost of the battery and push these SUVs above the 6k pound mark. Battery tech needs to improve to drive the weight and size of the packs down in order for the range to be increased.

The GC phev has the least range of all its competitors. I looked at the top spec Summit Reserve phev, but definitely opted out due to the weak range. Most others give at least 40 miles, which is perfect. I'm loving my new X5 50e and getting over 40 miles regularly on a charge.

@brnscofrnld In the grand scheme of things, people don't care about those numbers nor does mgpe even have any relevance. The number people care about in a phev is the electric only range. The GC is on a new 5th gen platform designed with ICE and phev in mind. That just tells me that Jeep did a piss poor job in the design and packaging of it to allow for a bigger better battery. BMW seemed to figure it out. The pre refresh 45e had dismal range, like the GC, or worse even. The new 50e more than doubles it (stated range and I'm getting more than that) and is a fantastic drive! Especially in $80k vehicles, not sure why one would choose the lesser range. (Both 50e and GC 4xe weigh 5500 lbs.) I did like very much how the Summit Reserve looked and felt, not that I dislike the X5 at all, but for the same money, range mattered to me more.

@@jeffs6090 good thing we didn't cross shop it at a starting price of 72k. We went with the Base 4xe and for our daily use with an L2 charger at the house we still manage to go 5 or 6 weeks between fuel ups. Not sure an extra 15 miles in all electric would have been worth it for us to spend an additional 15k. As far as packaging goes, I'm sure there was a cost point to hit and keeping the battery size where it is helped hit that. Also, since the Wrangler has the same battery capacity, that probably helped with keeping battery management and parts slightly more streamlined

I love everything about this car on paper, but all that space under the hood means the car could have been significantly shorter with equal practicality if it had not been designed first and foremost for that inline 6. It's a shame. Not a deal breaker on a 3-row car, but for a CX-50/70 it really makes it a less competitive choice for families, or anyone living in and around urban centers. Or even for the -90, you could have allocated 4-5 more inches of legroom for rear passengers. Would have been a great Uber XL car...

A few other requirements to get the most out of EV range when cold.” - Mazda support. PHEV gets 25 miles of EV range or 25 miles per gallon of gas. One EV charge is 15 Kwh and is equal to 1 gallon of gas. Take your last electric bill total and divide by the Kwh listed to find your Kwh electric cost then multiply by 15 and compare that cost to the cost of one gallon of gas. In many parts of the U.S. it cost more to run in EV mode than on gasoline.

For Los Angeles metro the numbers are 0.23$/kWh adding up to $3.45 for 15 kWh-s of charge, and premium gas at $4.39/gal at Costco. Given that Mazda gives $7500 off on new leases for the PHEV, it costs less than Turbo S while offering similar performance figures. While we can wish for even more efficiency, there is no competition so far that could beat price / performance ration in terms of PHEVs currently. I've been seeing 41+ MPG on my consumption consistently (does not include electricity consumed). In month of October I charged for 361 kWh, at the cost of $83.03 for that electricty. It would have costed me $105 to cover same using gasoline only. In California you also get free access to high-occupany lanes on freeways for a fixed charge for 2 years. I understand this is best case scenario, and other states may have lesser incentives.

Very expensive and complicated machine and that's why I sold my xc90 phev... minimal improvement in efficiency vs the upfront and long term costs. Just get gas or mild hybrid. If you have the infrastructure electric would be best ex EV9 most ppl only drive 40 miles a day.
