The 2024 Coke 600 Was A Huge LETDOWN

Спорт

For weeks the “Greatest Day In Motorsports” has been hyped up due to Kyle Larson’s attempt at the Coke 600/Indy 500 double. Unfortunately Mother Nature had other plans by delaying the start of the Indianapolis 500 and then also prematurely ending the Coca-Cola 600 later that night. With a day in the rear view and hopefully emotions simmered down we need to look back at this odd night. The 2024 Coke 600 was a huge letdown.

They Did this out of spite against Larson and Hendrick Motorsports because Rick prioritized the 500 and Larson since Ricky could never drive when he was alive. And Jeff for a little didn't went to CART. Jim France and Steve Phelps yesterday managed to make Brian France look better. As for the race, there is nothing to like it, the car is still terrible.

I hate it wasnt delayed to give Larson a chance at the 1100 just cause a special someone showed up to watch, i hate it was cancelled due to humidity instead of postponed for the morning and instead was just tossed away like its just some meaningless race, and i hate that alot of long time NASCAR "fans" seemingly dont care one bit.

Exactly here’s another thing you did not say but both IndyCar and NASCAR should’ve done knowing that Kyle Larson was not going to make it in time. They should’ve started both races earlier, especially indyCar. Also, if the Indy 500 was able to finish the Daytona 500 earlier this year on Presidents’ Day, we did the Coca-Cola 600 on this Memorial Day last year in 2023. Not to mention, we moved the clash one whole day early, which is never done before and it’s a holiday today this is embarrassing. FOX Sports says we would go back racing until Mike Joy called the race at 11:30 last night not his fault personally but I felt deceit by Shannon spake Larry McReynolds and Jamie McMurray. I love them as people but they made an assumption out of themselves and they became fools. I understand that humidity did not help and we were past the halfway. I understand there has to be consistency and nothing last forever, but there was no other rain behind it and this is a crown jewel. We deserve better than this. This was one of the worst public relations moves NASCAR has ever made.

Totally agree with you about Magnussen, there was no need for him to make that move. Those are the kinds of things that get drivers fired. Speaking of firings, it is highly likely that Estban Ocon will be fired/replaced by Alpine this week due to the incident he had with his teammate Pierre Gasly later on in that race. The team principal at Alpine was absolutely pissed after this & cursed out Ocon on the French broadcast of the Monaco GP & I don't blame him one bit for doing so as Monaco is considered to be a home race for them.

NBC's coverage really needs to be highlighted. The absolute dichotomy between The Indy 500 coverage and the Coke 600 coverage was night and day. NBC kept things engaging and exciting, even in the slow moments. FOX, meanwhile, took one of the biggest races of the year and just made it boring and borderline unwatchable. I can not understand how FOX has continued to fumble coverage after coverage. I can only suspect that they saw the 7-year exclusivity deal for the truck series and simply lost any ounce of care. They get their paycheck, and that's all they care about. NASCAR on NBC, TNT, and Amazon can not come sooner.

Kyle Larson has everything to be proud of. He ran upfront all weekend at indy. Was bad fast and kept it clean. Yes he got a penalty but none the less he did amazing. On the cup side he drove amazing qualified well and feel like he could've been a serious contender in the cup race well last part of it. I think Nascar seriously needs to get their stuff together and get their calls right. Fox needs to have reprecutions for calling it, giving a false sense of rain, and being horrible in general all season long and in reality for years now. I highly doubt ticket sales will be good next year for the Coke 600. And honeslty I wouldn't blame people if no one showed up to Charlotte. This is such a joke and is so frustrating as a Nascar fan and a motorsports fan in general. But credit for Larson. I am so proud of him for the amazing runs he had.

My thoughts on NASCAR calling the race are this. First, yes it sucks. Yes, the fact that they waited so long and it seemed like we might finish the race makes it suck worse. With that said though, I think NASCAR made the correct call. The race was called at about 11:40ish pm. Looking at the pictures I've seen posted all over X, twitter, whatever you want to call it. Yes, the track appeared to be drying, but it was still a good way from being raceable, and there also appeared to be a number of weepers which can be a nuisance, hence we have the Texas track we have now. At best, the race may have restarted at 12:30 with about 140 laps to go and one stage break. If the stage break was the only caution the rest of the race, which, let's be honest, is highly unlikely, we're looking at about an hour and a half to finish which puts us at 2am, but given the history of how NASCAR races end lately, it was likely to be closer to 3. One likely factor in the decision that nobody seems to be talking about, is just safety for drivers and pit crews. The later into the night a race runs, the more likely a driver or crew member gets fatigued and/or loses focus and could make a serious, life threatening mistake which causes a whole new set of problems. As far as finishing the race this morning/afternoon, NASCAR has never postponed an official race to the next day and I don't think that's a precedent they want to set, knowing fans will then demand they postpone any race, regardless of the number of laps left and point to this race going, "well you did it for that race, why not this one?"

I'm not mad at fox or NASCAR calling it official since the it's already halfway it's the way handled it,if they knew the rain is coming and they can't get track dry enough to race again then there is no reason or excuse to wait 30 minutes+ to hour to say it's official might well say they lost the track right then an there everybody goes home.

First off I don't see why Fox would call the race over. Even if they were broadcasting it late into the night it's not like they had other programming to get to. The only thing I would think they'd be concerned about is the people doing the broadcast, but that would mean Fox is concerned about their laborers. I suppose the execs at the track might have just said, "F it, we're going to bed." Second would NASCAR really let Fox call off the race? I'd be surprised if NASCAR let the TV people make the call. It's more likely that NASCAR made the call and the Fox people were just the first to hear about it, and they wanted to get out so they told the booth before NASCAR could relay to anyone else. Either way I can't say the call was wrong since it was like 1AM- honestly since they were past halfway I'm shocked they didn't make the call right away.

It sounds really ridiculous to blame FOX considering they stayed on the air throughout the whole delay. (As for those affiliates that stopped airing it, they might have wanted to get to either their very late local news or had weather alerts to report.) Also, the race was official since they reached the halfway point, and NASCAR has never restarted a race after both such a lengthy delay and the halfway point. Yeah, it stinks the race ended early, but you also have to consider the idea that it would take that long to finish something that would have been seen only by insomniacs and the west coast. Also fatigue. As for Prime being a potential improvement, I eagerly anticipate complaints about buffering, the app crashing, and commercials (because even TNF still had ads).

Frankly if it wasn't for a UFL game prior to the 600 on Fox I think the start gets moved up and everyone's complaining about that. I will admit tv wise there probably was gonna be fans that weren’t gonna stay up past midnight to watch the race in full length, people can go back and watch the last 150 laps to see how it all played out or just see the last highlights of the race the next day if need be, i was gonna do the same, so I kinda understand that part, but if there was a way to get the race back under green then why not do so? Again, people can watch the last 150 laps or highlights if needed instead of calling drivers back to their cars then find out last second “oh hey, race is over. Thanks for comin everyone.” Just sucks for Larson that he didn’t get to do the double. Hopefully he can get it 100% next year. And at least u can say he did lead some laps at the Indy 500 even if it was cause he was off strategy. But honestly I don’t blame Larson and Rick for sticking it out with the 500 instead of going to run the 600. Lots of money went into the project, might as well stick it out while u can and really just do something to have fun. He talked about running Le Mans when he was done with NASCAR, I say take shot at it while you’re still in your prime and not wait til later when you’re running like 2010s Jeff Gordon for example. If him and/or Hendrick can get something together for him to run either a Corvette in LMGT3 or something in Hypercar with a Cadillac team or kind of a Hendrick co-owned one off car for Le Mans, I’m sure NASCAR will still give him a wavier for missing 1 or 2 Cup races. Kinda why I wanna see him try the Rolex 24 again at some point. He ran back in 2014 and 2015 as well and showed pace with Ganassi back when they ran the Ford Rileys and even got a win for the Daytona Prototype at the Rolex, I’m kinda curious how he’d in modern prototypes of even if just in any of the GT categories.

I was so hyped…. This is why they say don’t get your hopes up. It just sucked watching them dry the track for an hour and when it finally looks race able they just call it. And yes the videos of it raining had me and my dad to believe it was pouring

I, too, believe FOX was instrumental in calling this race. We’ve all heard the theory about the inundation of commercials on their broadcasts, namely that they overbid for the current media rights deal and they have to try to recoup their losses by drowning us with commercials. Obviously, the viewership at 1 or 2 am wasn’t worth it for them, so they probably threw in the towel. It’s interesting to speculate on what would have happened had Larson finished in the top five (or even won) at Indy.

I’m absolutely disgusted. I paid good money to fly out and see 600 miles of racing and at least an attempt to finish those said miles. Don’t know if I’ll fly out to see the 600 next year, but I’ll still probably go to the southern 500 since they treat their fans with dignity there.

Good thing I didn’t Live Stream my Live Reactions to the 600 on TikTok. Decided to find better stuff to do this weekend and it sounds like I made the right call. I feel bad for Larson and his fans. But hey, you live and you learn!
