I’m amazed by the number of complaints that the new Integra is “just a nicer Civic.” Uh, yeah- so was the old one! I assume the complaints are coming from younger people who weren’t around for the older Integras and only remember the Type R. I *was* around back then, and I can tell you the vast majority of 1990s Integras had a 140-hp 4-cylinder, cloth seats, hubcaps, and a 4-speed automatic. It was basically just a luxury Civic back then, too.

It really seems like Type S will be Acura’s top of the line spec for their cars while Honda will represent Type R since they finally (and generously) gave us the CTR. I would love to see an Integra Type R again, but the question is does Honda want the Type R coming from Acura. It didn’t matter back in the 90s because the Type R brand wasn’t grounded in the states as it was in Japan and Europe. For being a “nicer civic”, the Integra has also always outperformed the civic and its Si model. All the civics of the time (at least in the US) were all SOHC while the Integra always had the DOHC motors. Now the new Integra is sharing the same motor as the Si. The power difference against the old generation Integras and civics weren’t by crazy margins, but the difference was substantial. The newer models of civics have a very small power difference compared to this new Integra. Even if the older Integras were just “nicer civics”, they felt distinctly different. This new one does not convince me that the new Integra will be distinctly different though. But i don’t know, we’ll have to see when it’s released. Hopefully a Type-S model will be significantly better than the base and Si.

Still this mew integra is a disappointment. It should have had a real vtec engine honestly but whatever. It should have at least had the 10 speed automatic or 8 speed automatic from the ILX. This being a sedan will probably make it not be much more successful than the ILX sedan it replaces despite the throwback name, especially with it not offering any noteworthy benefits over the Civic aside from all the convenience features that Honda purposely took away for this current generation just to give them to the higher priced Acura version.
