The 2020 Lexus RC F Track Edition is a Refreshing High Performance Drive | MotorWeek Track Test

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Just a few months ago, we drove an updated Lexus RC F Sport Coupe. And while we thoroughly enjoyed our time with it, it was hard not to temper our enthusiasm, knowing that this car was just around the corner. It’s the RC F Track Edition, and it is indeed all about fast corners. So let’s hit the track and take in a few!

    Nothing against the A90 Supra, but if Toyota is capable of producing a car like the Lexus RC and LC, they should be capable of producing the Supra by themselves isn't it? Fun fact, the old A80 Supra shares its platform with the Toyota Soarer/Lexus SC at the time.

    Germaine Liew it’s not about whether Toyota can or can’t, it’s about spending their capital on projects with the best returns. The Supra is a niche model that demanded a straight-six, and for Toyota to develop their own engine would cost them millions of dollars and they wouldn’t see that money back on Supra sales alone. Toyota are also putting most of their development budget into EV and alternative energy drivetrains. This is hugely expensive for automakers but far more critical than a two-seat sports car, hence why Toyota found a partner in BMW to share costs.

  • @spazemonkey

    @spazemonkey

    Most likely cost, this thing is around base 911 price but not even close in terms of performance. For those who think that the cost could be cut as a Toyota should also remember the fun fact that the twin turbo mk4 Supra cost as much as the top trim Lexus it shared chassis with, so most likely there won't be much on cost savings. The nice thing is if people feel that this is a true successor to the mk4 Supra they have the option of buying the RCF, although I do think that'll be a tough sell since the track times I've seen with the RCF is about the same as the mk5 Supra.

    As someone with a regular RCF, this car is DEFINITELY for the hardcore Lexus enthusiast. Even people like me who love the Regular RCF would not buy this because like many people are saying this car is 100k for just a tiny boost in performance that can be made up with driver mod or aftermarket parts. Sure it looks cool but why would you get this car for 100k when you can pickup a NISMO GTR,NEW GT500,used C7 ZR1,2 used Camaro ZL1s etc... all for the same price. At the end of the day anyone who is looking to buy a car for the track doesn't care about reliability or comfort and the RCF in my opinion is a perfect street car/daily driver but Lexus should not have released this track variant without doing something SUBSTANTIALLY different (forced induction). People aren't going to buy your 100k track car when the average mustang gt with some after market parts will destroy it. Lexus just needs to bring out that twin turbo v8 coming in the LCF and people will actually buy their performance cars.

But, the Hyundai Veloster N with the 275 hp is much less in pricing and the fun factor is in an all time high. The Civic Type R is the only car in its class that'll edge it out by it's hp advantage. Props to the Fosd ST bring some heat to the segment. I'm sure the Mazda 3 turbo with also bring some heat into the mix.

    The new Supra will run circles around the RC F and it costs nearly half as much. Other than the styling being a little strange and the interior being straight up BMW, I DON’T find the new Supra to be embarrassing at all. I’d much rather have the Supra than the RC F on a track or just driving around town. BMW’s B58 3.0L turbocharged I-6 is much stronger than Lexus’ naturally aspirated 5.0L V8. While the power numbers themselves may be lower, look how strong the Supra, Z4 and M340i perform. The M340i can run a sub-4 second 0-60. ZF’s 8HP transmission is also vastly superior to Toyota-Aisin’s 8-speed. The ZF shifts substantially faster, shift logic is more intelligent and it’s capable of huge downshifts like 8th to 2nd, which the Toyota transmission can’t do. My dream for Toyota/Lexus is for them to release an all-new IS/RC with an in-house turbocharged I-6 engine that would be a modern interpretation of the 2JZ. Either the Aisin-Warner 8-speed automatic needs to be replaced with the ZF 8HP, or they have to rework the LS’ 10-speed to greatly improve its performance characteristics to match ZF. Lexus is still about refinement and no engine layout is nearly as smooth or refined as a straight six. They sound phenomenal too and we all know how reliable and tunable the 2JZ was. That engine could also replace the V8 in the next generation Land Cruiser, Tundra, Sequoia, GX, and LX, while also replacing the 3.4T V6 in the LS. I’d love to see a turbocharged I-6 offered as an upgrade engine for the 4Runner and Tacoma too.

    Lexus needs to drop a couple of turbochargers on the 5.0L V8, mate it to AWD and ditch their Aisin 8-speed for ZF’s 8HP and they would have a serious performance vehicle worthy of competing with BMW, Mercedes and Audi. Also, Lexus that spindle grille and weird dropping lights has got to go. It’s so overplayed now it’s just ugly. 4.4s to 60mph is not competitive in 2020. Also, why would you ditch the torque vectoring diff on the most extreme version? $98K for something slower than an M340i, Model 3 LR AWD (not even the Performance), C43 AMG, S4, etc. No thanks.

  • @fields1

    Johnny Cham I have no clue who papadakis is. Also, there’s no way they would be able to get a 2JZ engine to pass current federal emissions testing or deliver impressive fuel economy using the old port fuel injection of yesteryear. Even Toyota has adopted Direct Injection on all of their new engines. The B58 is as close to a modern 2JZ as you’d get. It’s got all of the latest advancements to improve emissions, have almost no turbo lag, offer impressive fuel economy, and last a long time. I hope Toyota does develop their own new I-6 for Lexus vehicles, but they won’t. The internal combustion engine is on its way out. To develop an entirely new engine family for one or two cars doesn’t make financial sense. My argument in favor of a “new 2JZ” would be it could be used in every RWD-based Toyota or Lexus vehicle including the Tundra, 4Runner, Tacoma, Sequoia, Land Cruiser, LS, LX, GX, GS, IS, and RC. The beauty of the I-6 as you know is how smooth, torquey and it’s generally a strong engine design that lasts a long time. It’s also cheaper to produce because it only has two camshafts instead of 4 like in a V6, one head, doesn’t require balance shafts, and they usually weigh less. The reason Toyota and everyone else embraced the V6 is that they can shove it in a FWD car like the Camry, Highlander, RX, ES and formerly the RAV4, while at the same time it can be used longitudinally mounted in their RWD cars. It’s generally not too easy to fit an I-6 sideways for FWD use, but it has been done (Volvo - S60, S90, XC60 and XC90) and VW’s VR6 is more like an Inline-6 than a V6. I personally think an inline-6 (maybe with electric assistance like a 48V electric supercharger) would fit into Lexus’ ethos of refinement much better than a V6 that is essentially identical to the one in a $29K Camry V6.

    The B58 is 200lbs lighter,responds to boost faster at a lower rpm,can simply make over 700whp+ with only a few mods,and can handle more power in its internals than the 2j can. If it we're crap then we might aswell start saying 11s are fast af for RCF's.

    They can definitely up the whp, but they'd lose their identity of keeping NA V8s alive. The car is strong enough, 380whp is a lot of power for the people who drive this car, not everyone is whipping around corners and trynna go 0-60 in 3 or do the quarter in 10s on the streets and highway. Most people talking about how better f80/82's perform are the ones who have their previous cars on the market as salvaged or multiple accidents on their vin. There are just too many shitty drivers who get a M4 and just full send it without even being able to control that much power let alone how to counter steer when they spin.
