I bought my First bike ever MT09 SP and the first 3 months I never , literally NEVER set it on A mode, 3months I kept it on B mode, then 1 month on standard, and after that to A mode. So if you have the discipline to hold yourself from dangerous situations, go for it. It is your attitude which changes your chances on this bike. Good Luck.

I just pre ordered the 2022 MT09 SP as my first big bike When I get it I’m only going to ride it on D mode 4 because 1 or 2 will probably scare me and probably give me second thoughts about the purchase

Nice video. I've had a lot of bikes the past 25 years. Aprilia Tuono, FZ09, Ducati Scrambler (talk about twitchy throttle!), Sportsters, Softails, GSXR, KLR650...small cc and large cc, but, to me, it all depends on what you are comfortable riding. If you are uncomfortable, you will not ride well. Skill plays a huge part too, but if you have to reach for that clutch or move your foot too much to shift, it plays a part. I loved my FZ09 so much that I went back to one (MT09 now). It's the most comfortable to me and I feel the most confident on it. Ride safe, all.

Mt 09 is the desire to get more scared feelings that a normal heart can stand.

Great video! I've been riding a scooter for few years now and planning to upgrade soon. My choice has always been MT09 but It's kinda intimidating.

I also learned to ride on a 2015 Mt-09, You just got to be absolutely responsable. Was an amazing experience

Same situation as you, I am a beginner and seriously thinking about getting the MT09, thanks for the insight on your experience. I still haven’t decided on either to start on a smaller displacement bike or go big.

Nice to see someone ride this bike in a 'normal' fashion for a change. If you look around on youtube you would think that all it ever does is wheelie. While I appreciate the fact that it CAN do them easily, I also like to see the general day to day usability displayed here. Kudos to you for getting this bike and handling it responsibly even though I understand it can be a challenge.

Thanks! It was definitely a learning curve at first. But I've have grown pretty comfortable with the bike. Even though I have learned it doesn't take much to get the front wheel into the air...I still ride it in a "normal" way day to day.

Good advice my friend. If we know ourselves, we can learn how to safely control ourselves on midrange to larger bikes. Ride safely mate!

Very well said. I have been trying to explain this to people as well. It’s all situational and how much they trust themselves to start on something like this. I’ve been riding for 4 years now and just picked up a 2020 mt09. Looking back on it I wish I got it as my first bike lol. But hey some people smoke for 50 years and still have perfect lungs. Just like some people start on turbo ‘busas and haven’t dropped it once.

I’m 53 and have been riding dirt bikes since age 12, and street bikes since age 17. I bought a 2014 FZ-09 when they first came out and it was obvious that it was not a bike fit for beginners. Between the overly aggressive throttle mapping and whimpy suspension, it took all of my experience to keep myself out of trouble. After the dealer reflashed the ECU to the 2015 spec, it was better, but still required good throttle control. I added a K&N air filter, Power Commander and Akrapović exhaust, and while still smoother in the first 1/4 throttle than stock, the thing is still a beast and needs a disciplined right hand. I know they have massaged the throttle mapping over the years, but I still hear people saying that it’s on the aggressive side. In short, I would not recommend even the newer MT-09 as a first bike. Get comfortable on something less powerful and learn to ride using good habits before stepping up to this bike.

Personally i don't understand experienced motorists who is saying always don't buy big bike on your first bike. Amount of the power doesn't matter, it's behind your ears what decisions you making on the traffic. If you just starting the hobby you are not talented, if you have been drive many years you are talented. Drive the skills you have, not over your skill levels. I have this bike on my first one and I love it, minus rep that the original seat is too hard on longer sessions and your butt starts become numb. You can kill yourself on moped if you playing it like idiot. Take the bike what you love it and it feels good, don't listen big boys shitty talk.

I’ve got a 2016 FJ09 . Picked it up spring 2019 with low KM. The bike has 3 modes this particular year . The lower mode, I think B is a derated engine mode for rain or beginners. The throttle is very slow compared to the High mode which is nuts. That mode has no engine brake either so your always blazing and coming off highways you really need to apply the brakes more . The mid setting is my favourite as it’s got an engine braking mode so coming off highways is easy . Overall I love the bike and it’s very close to the 2019. Because it’s the FJ it has more fairing and that helps at high speeds . Runs really smooth , very low turbulence . Great Video, Thanks

I am looking at this bike for my 4th I had a cbr300 volcan 900 and a r6 .. loved the power of the r6 but hated the siting position so I think the mt09 will be a great choice

@Kevin H ahh for sure demo days are the best if you can do one to try out the MT09. If you felt pretty comfortable though with the power on the MT07 you might enjoy the MT09 more in the long run. Just depends with your level of comfort, budget, and how well you know your skill level. But you can't go wrong either way, let me know which one you end up choosing. Have fun and ride safe!

i’d say mt07. r3 - mt07 is still a big leap i’ve had the r3 for 5 months now have 9k miles on it planning on getting a yamaha xj6, then 600 then so on because i dont want to get a big bike and ride it slow and get thrashed by an r3 😂 still your choice tho

this is a proper advice on this bike or any other powerful bike

I was tourne between this one and the MT07. I got the MT07 for roughly $5900 on sale in Sweden and it is perfect for a first bike, the MT09 was about $9000. This one looks cooler tho but I'll think the MT10 SP will be my next project, or maybe a Harley Fat Bob, haven't decided yet 😁 great video

Same as you . I took a course 15 years ago and never bought a bike for 15 years. and one day i bought the MT07 . After two month on it now i d like MTO9 or if finance were no issue the MT10 . I also like the looks of these badass bikes . I agree all is in the attitude. Pratice and know your limits. just practice to get better at it that s it. I am a lousy rider . I mean, at least i was . I pratice a lot almost everyday tigh turns, swerving to avoid an obstacle, slow riding without stalling, emergency braking etc ... There is a lot on you tube of advice to get better . So if it take 100 hours of practice to reach acertain level that another guy has easily reached so be it but just practice .Practice makes it perfect. i would advice to practice safe riding instead of BS riding for beginners just to impress girls or friends and anyone would be OK whatever the bike you decided to get.....

Getting ready to buy one but will be my second bike I started on a GSXR 1000 love it but will hurt you if you dont respect it had it for a little over a year before i sold it... Ready for another one

July 2019 I bought an mt-09 as my first bike too! You're right, as long as you know your capabilities, how to respect the power, you're good. Not everyone should start on this bike though. I've always been proficient at driving whatever I sit in and I know that about myself. If you can't say the same, start on no stronger than the mt-07. Work your way up and ride safe.

After watching your video, I've decided to get the mt-09.

I was looking for an mt-10 as first bike video, but i can’t find any video on the topic so i’ll be fine with this one 😅

I've been welding, fabricating,and using power tools for over 40 years. And I've respected them all the time. I use to race cars, again nothing but respect. I'm my late 50's and I finally just got my motorcycle permit. Other than riding a moped for 7 years, I've never owned a motorcycle. Now I'm very interested in the MT-09 as my first bike. I don't plan on do wheelies. I don't plan racing it. All I want to do is just ride. Your video is very informative. Now knowing this, would you recommend this bike for me? Consider me a subscriber.👍👍

The problem with buying say an MT07 first, is the money you will lose part exchanging for the 09, in 12 months time ... Use it in B mode until your confidence rises, and save 5k on buying smaller and upgrading.!

Hey man, how is that windshield? Does the air flow pretty smooth over it?

It’s great! I took it off a few months ago because I forgot what it felt like to ride without it. I put it back in the next day. The windshield makes a huge difference, especially at highway speeds. It deflects wind really well. If you’re a tall person though you might still feel a good bit of wind on your helmet, but it’s still way better than not having it on.

What windscreen is that? Is that one more fitted for the older style headlight?

How about ride dirtbikes for a few years before getting on the highway. Almost hitting a few deer on the dirt road will give you good perspective on safe speeds on the highway

I hate when they say you learn easier on a smaller displacement bike as if im going to hit the race track/the canyons everyday

That's not why. There are many normal road situation where having less power will cause you not to spin out, do a wheelie, etc. The brakes may also be a lot stronger, bike will be heavier, etc. It's not all about the power when it comes to straight line speed. Also consider the fact that you can get yourself into worse situation where you may be riding way above your skill level.

the dealer i bought my mt09 at had a barely used monster 821 for sale that I also looked at. The monster is an awesome looking bike but the mt09 was a better deal at the time. I would for sure love to test ride one.

are the suspensions good enough?

The factory suspension isn't the best but I was able to adjust it though to make the ride/handling better. The SP model comes with better suspension.

yeah it is kind of a big bike. But sometimes I think it looks small. Either way, with your height/build I don't think you would look small on it. At 5'10'' I can flat foot the bike and also have a bend in my knee, So you should also be able to flat foot it no problem.

2020 MT-09 is my first bike. Think it's great, but maybe it helps that I've been dding a manual car since I've owned my own

Imagine never having ridden a motorcycle and coming into the experience with theory and practice of how to go, what engine breaking feels like and how you judge stop distances with it, the feel of torque as you accelerate into higher-than-avg RPMs, and the sensation of shifting your way into speed. Leaves you able to focus the vast majority of your attention to understanding the physics and balance of the bike and its power

@@heir__ true, same goes for me in reverse. Shifting on the dirt bikes as a young kid, helped me understand the concept and made for an easier transition when I first got my licence at 16 and got a standard pickup.

Its an MRA Racing Windscreen. Works really well deflecting wind...especially if you do a lot of highway riding.

The motovlog thing has been done to death but nice bike, I want one so bad

As a long time rider, I see the younger guys buy the fast crotch rockets and kill or cripple themselves in the first few months of riding! They love to go fast and be crazy, not respecting the power and torque these powerful bikes have, and that gets them into trouble. No matter your skill level or experience, you need to know your bike, and its capabilities and its limits. Stopping time at a hundred miles an hour is, depending on your bike up to 2-300 feet... Non abs bikes? Loss of traction in corners, road conditions, wet /dry road grime, pebbles these can all dump you fast if your nor paying attention. Situational awareness is the key to having a good day or not. Your head must be on a swivel if you want to live a long life out there, car drives can sometimes be blind to you on a bike! You must be in control of the situation at all times, always. No matter what you choose take it easy getting to know yourself and the bikes limitations! Rubber to the road!

You gotta flash the bike, the throttle would be way way less twitchy

I really want this bike. It would be my second bike. I would get the 07 but I don't want to be bored of the power within a couple months. Is this a stupid idea for me to get this thing. Too much power?

that's kinda one of those decisions you have to make for you. It really comes down to how well you know your limits/skills. But you also don't want to put yourself in a situation where you might get hurt. If it's going to be your second bike and your coming from a smaller CC bike like a R3/Ninja 400 and you've been riding for a while then you might outgrow an 07 fairly quick. Im 5'10'' roughly 180. with my legs straight down I flat foot the bike. So you should be good!

That's a lot of bike for you. You control the throttle. At least it's light. I would suggest to keep both hands on the bars at all times. Keep it in gear at all stops with clutch pulled in.

If you have respect for yourself and others and care of your life and a bit of common sense you can start even on bursa,, I start on gsxr600 and in two months trade for gsxr1000and after nearly one year stepped to rsv4 RR for one year and currently s1krr and I'm looking to buy MT09 for funn and like a project to transform it in my style,,,never dropped a bike in my life or accident but I followed some rules

I'm shopping the MT-07/09 currently. Like you I've come across lots of anecdotal advice that's not really contributing to the decision making process. One rider might be like, "the MT-07 handle bars suck!!!... get the 09".... Next rider, "you can't use all the MT-09's power... get the 07!!"... Next rider... "MT 07 is a god level beginner bike!!". Next rider...'"MT-09 is heavy!!... get the 07"... At the end of the day, I'm choosing the MT-09 because I do want a bike that I can grow into. Price point and beginner status is provoking with the MT-07... but I don't want to be left craving more out of a motorcycle in a year or two.

PaulHD_ CYC same, I’m in between the two and the 09 has me sold. It like when I got my first car, everyone told me not to get a mustang GT cause I was gonna crash and kill myself, I got it anyway and moved on to WRX STI

hello, I don't think it is a good idea for someone very young and inexperienced or with little, especially if they have never ridden a motorcycle with a lower cylinder capacity, .. starting with a 09 is playing with luck, .. it may even run well, but it is all advisable, even a 07 will already be dangerous for someone who has never ridden a motorcycle, .. although the current bikes are very comfortable and even safe, .but the ideal is to start with a 125cc or 300cc, I in my case went from one 125 cc for mt 07, and I can say that there is no comparison possible, even a mt 07 in a few seconds and little space, ... it can give 140 to 160 km / h, and they should not say that with the control, mode, smoother it makes it easier, yes, maybe, but even so, it goes a long way, .. now it also depends on the person, if you respect the bike, and its power, .. going progressively, .. it may be possible, but not at all advisable

I've owned both the mt 07 and the mt 09 at the same time, the 09 is a horrible first bike, heck, it's even a bad second bike come to think of it.

Get what bike you want jus learn with it😂

Saying a beginner can't ride a powerful bike is just plain wrong. I agree that a true beginner (i.e someone that can't shift gears properly, knows instinctively where the brake and clutch are etc.) should NOT get the MT-09. Definitely not. However, if you have ridden bikes before even though it's a 125cc or maybe even a moped and the controls feels natural I see no reason to just buy the bike you want. If you have respect for the power it has. An MT-09 is a seriously easy bike to ride in terms of balance, wide bars, great seat position etc. It's just alot of engine. If you sit down in a Corvette for the first time you know that if you punch the throttle it will spin out and most likely turn into a metal heap of crap. So you don't. Now why would you twist the throttle all the way on an MT-09 knowing it will rip the tire from the road or lift the front wheel with a very good chance of a crash? So you don't. Use your brain and you will be fine. The bike is easy to ride apart from the power.
